Customer Reviews

Comments: Being a big fan of Hoka, a large framed athlete, and have had back and knee issues, the Mafate 3's were amazing. The back and knee pain have gone away and the Mafate 3's carried me through 9 months of training, and IRONMAN Chattanooga finish with absolutely no problems. Was excited to try out the new Mafate speeds, but when they showed up and were put to the test, I was a bit disappointed. The specs for both shoes show 35mm sole, however the speeds feel nowhere near as cushioned as the 3's. The speeds also do not roll forward on the forefoot when in stride like the 3's. I definitely miss the padded tongue of the 3's, as to I can also feel the laces digging in to the top of my foot. Also what happened to the extra pair of laces. Still like the speeds, and will continue to use them unless the back and knee pain come back. Trying to locate a new pair of 3's just in case, but sold out......UGH.

Comments: Bought these in hopes of using them for ultra training and racing. Loved the cushioning but the ankle cuff on this show was much too high. It was digging into my ankle. The toe box also seems a bit narrow on the Hoka's; the outside of my little toe was tight up against the edge - a guaranteed blister if I had run long in them. Returned.

Comments: A bit disappointed in what I expected out of these Mafate Speeds. The cushioning is nowhere near the Stinson ATR but also not as stiff as the Rapa Nui 2. I took these out on a 23 mile run and with the stiffness, I was not ready to go all-out down hills. These may be relegated to training and/or medium range duty. They also did not come with spare laces, so I had to snag them from an old pair of running shoes when I re-laced my shoes. The shoe is narrow but the right type of lacing can help - look up "how to lace running shoes site:active.com".

Comments: This is my 4th pair of Hokas (first Mufate Speeds) I like them except for the fact that my outer ankle rides on the top of the shoe therefore making my ankle extremely sore. I'm on the way to a shoe shop to see if I can have it corrected. If not they will be retired. In 2 weeks I'll run my 2nd 50k in this pair and I don't know if I can make it unless they're fixed. I don't know if it's the lack of padding at that spot or the shape and design in that area. Very disappointed.

Comments: I've always been a fan of Mafate but I'm disappointed with the Mafate Speed. The Mafate Speed is WAY TOO NARROW. And yes it does have an odd long toe box. Not comfortable at all running downhill as the older Mafates were. The tongue is paper-thin and I can feel the shoe laces digging into the top of my foot. Uppers are also paper thin. I ran 6 miles in them today right out of the box and they won't be running 28 miles with me tomorrow, or any other time. I'll use my older Mafates for that job. Sadly, these shoes will be retired to gardening use.

Comments: I'm a huge Hoka fan and these shoes disappointed. The only thing I like is the rugged and lugged outsole. The shoes are too narrow and have an odd long toe box. I've tried all the laces and still cannot get a snug fit in the heel. They have a large stack height, but dense firm midsole. Thus you get lots of weight, no trail feel, and little Hoka softness for descents. These would make a decent hiking shoe but are not good for running. Love my Stinson and Rapa Nui 2 however.

Comments: really thought I would not like this shoe since I am a big fan of the Clifton and Huaka. However, with my knees and legs feeling bad due to doing speed work this shoe made my recovery run feel great. The spring to the midsole is great and the shoe feels and runs lighter than it appears. Does run a bit on the narrow side which is great since I have narrow feet. My wife loves hers and uses them for walks and hikes. My one beef for a 170 dollar shoe you think HOKA could have provide laces. I got them with the Huaka. What gives with this?
