Asics Gel Scout Product Review

Short Take

With intense styling and an outsole that means business, the Asics Gel Scout delivers rugged trail performance with the fit and cushioning Asics is known for.

Big Features

  • Roadworthy Cushioning: The Scout utilizes the same forefoot and heel Gel units as Asics’ road offerings, giving the shoe excellent impact protection.
  • Unrelenting Grip: Aggressive lugs and sticky outsole rubber give the Gel Scout a near excessive amount of traction over a wide range of terrain.
  • Trail Specific Details: A full-length rock plate, lace garage, and gusseted tongue ensure a hassle free experience out on the trails.

Trail Test

Sometimes an intense and rugged trail shoe is needed to handle your most unforgiving trail outings, and the Asics Gel Scout is a shoe that easily fits that bill. Right out of the box we sensed that this shoe can handle the serious stuff, and putting this shoe to the test confirmed its trail prowess.

The outsole is a headlining feature of the Gel-Scout. An aggressive lug pattern gives the shoe excellent traction on rocky and loose surfaces, and our testers didn’t experience any problems climbing or descending. The outsole features sticky wet-specific rubber that performs as expected, making stream crossings a breeze. The forefoot rock plate is a welcome addition, providing a bit of added protection against sharp rocks and stone bruising without making the shoe overly stiff.

The fit of the Gel-Scout was on par with what we expect from Asics, and similar to their popular road offerings such as the Cumulus or GT series. Expect a modestly roomy toebox and midfoot that will accommodate most runners. There are minimal seams on the inside of the shoe, limiting friction on the foot and subsequent nagging irritations.

The Gel-Scout features Gel units in the forefoot and the heel just like most shoes in Asics’ road lineup. In combination with a more traditional midsole geometry than the more minimal trail shoes, this makes for substantial impact protection for long days on the trail. Our testers noted that the shoe is more than suitable for the miles of road on the way to the trailhead as well.

Runners Say

The traction on the Gel Scout is fantastic. This shoe has handled everything I can throw at it. The grip is especially good in sand and loose, pebbly conditions.

Great shoe on a variety of terrain. Works on hardpack, with enough traction and protection for rocky trails as well.

The fit and ride of the Gel Scout shoe is very similar to an Asics road shoe. This shoe would make for a great crossover for an Asics fan looking to get off the streets.
