Asics Gel Lyte33 Product Review

Short Take

Flexible, Featherweight and Fast sum up the design spec for the Asics Gel Lyte33, a shoe that can excel in faster training and race situations.

Big Features

  • Lightweight Technologies: The Lyte33 combines several technologies to save weight, including a Solyte midsole, open mesh, and strategic use of outsole rubber in high-wear areas.
  • Focus on Flex: The segmented midsole offers significant flexibility from heel to toe, while a Guidance Line offers vertical flex for improved gait efficiency.
  • Rearfoot Gel: A Gel unit in the heel provides responsive shock absorption.

Road Test

With the Gel Lyte33, Asics designed a lean, fast shoe to compete in the class of elemental models including the Saucony Kinvara 3, Nike Free 4.0 v2 and Brooks PureFlow. What was the result of the company stripping out some of its core technologies to produce a more back-to-basics shoe?

According to our testers, the Gel Lyte33 delivers a smooth ride and progressive transition thanks to its full-ground-contact platform. The shoe feels more level than its 6mm offset suggests, making it a strong choice for the runner who is focused on a natural foot position but still wants some underfoot cushioning to take it easy on those metatarsals.

The upper fit testers well, with minimal overlays and even less stitching. That’s a nice feature for runners who like to go sockless. The Gel Lyte33 offers a more streamlined fit similar to other shoes in this category.

Runners Say

The upper fits my foot very well, and the Lyte33 is definitely one of the most flexible Asics models I’ve been in.

These feel a bit stiff right out of the box, but they soften up nicely after just a few miles.

The platform feels very flat, and I like the low offset combined with a nicely cushioned feel.
