Montrail Mountain Masochist II Product Review

Short Take

Minimal modifications to the Montrail Mountain Masochist II mean many mountaineering mudders will maintain their madness for this model.

Big Updates

  • FluidPost: There's only one change to the II version of this shoe. FluidPost is a foam midsole that gets progressively denser towards the medial side of the shoe. This offers seamless support that adapts to the individual runner's foot for cushioning and stability.

Trail Test

The Mountain Masochist has been a perennial favorite of dedicated trail runners who need some pronation support. Out on the trail, we liked the firm ride and smooth transition of this shoe. The outsole offers outstanding grip on terrain ranging from hard-packed dirt to loose gravel and mud.

The upper is ready, willing and able to cradle your foot for longer outings, with a heel collar and tongue that really locked the foot in place and a breathable mesh that shed heat.

Even with the trail market going lower and lighter, the Mountain Masochist still offers a worthwhile mix of serious trail cred and a little support for overpronation.

Runners Say

Matt

I can see why so many trail runners swear by this shoe. Very stable platform, a huggy fit, and that overall solid feel that broadcasts this shoe's willingness to take on anything that comes its way.

Joanna

The change to the FluidPost is undetectable compared to the original Mountain Masochist. I really like the outsole – it keeps you moving on uphills, keeps you planted on downhills, and doesn't collect rocks or other debris.

Tera

The traction on this shoe is impressive. If your run crosses over a variety of trail types, this is the shoe for you.
