Montrail Rogue Fly Product Review

Short Take

With a lightweight and minimal design for a cushioned trail shoe, the Montrail Rogue Fly brings a simple, no-frills experience to long distance running.

Big Features

  • Simple Mesh Upper: The upper is almost entirely devoid of overlays, resulting in a flexible feel with almost no seams exposed inside the shoe.
  • Hybrid Outsole: Small 3-point lugs and full Gryptonite rubber coverage provide multidirectional grip on a variety of surfaces from road to moderately technical trail.

Trail Test

Montrail’s Rogue Fly follows in the footsteps of their Rogue Racer, offering a lightweight, no-frills package built for ultra-distance running. Though the Rogue Fly may not exactly fit into the ‘minimalist’ category, its lack of bells and whistles gets straight to the point, while a fair amount of cushioning underfoot will keep runners going strong when the miles extend well into the double digits.

The cushioning of the Rogue Fly offers a fairly soft ride that still provides a bit of responsiveness and underfoot ground feel. The near traditional geometry (10mm heel-to-toe differential) allows for heelstriking, though the reasonably low platform keeps the shoe feeling responsive when landing forward of the heel.

The upper is where the Rogue Fly really shines. With few overlays, it provides a flexible and unobtrusive wrap around the foot, with few seams to rub against. Security is sacrificed in such an upper, and those who prefer a locked in fit and feel might want to look elsewhere. Still, the foot feels very anchored for how little material is present.

Runners Say

The upper hugs my foot securely, and I like how light and nimble this shoe feels on the trail.

For having no overlays, the upper does a fairly good job of keeping my foot in place, though I can still feel a bit of movement from side to side in the shoe, mostly in the forefoot.

Though the Rogue Fly delivers good traction on a variety of dry trails, I found the rubber to not work as well on wet, slick surfaces. I’d be cautious running in the wet in this shoe.
