More cushioned than its weight would imply, the New Balance 1190 packs a smooth ride into a lightweight, supportive trainer.
- Comfortable Fit: Breathable open mesh, minimal overlays, and a padded tongue and heel collar provide a soft and cozy fit.
- Light Support: A medial post provides minimal support without obstructing the smooth heel-to-forefoot transition.
- Soft Cushioning: The RevLite midsole foam adds plenty of bounce to the ride of the shoe while keeping the shoe lightweight.
As soon as we put on the 1190, we found ourselves at home in the classic New Balance fit: spacious and accommodating in the toebox, snug and secure through the midfoot. The interior of the shoe was soft, aided by the padded tongue, and the lack of overlays over the forefoot means you get lots of freedom of movement with minimal risk of irritations.
The 1190 features RevLite midsole material, touted as a lightweight foam compound that doesn’t sacrifice on cushioning. Indeed, our testers were impressed with the softness and bounce offered by a shoe in this weight class. Testers also loved the smooth ride of the shoe, credited to its full ground contact in combination with the soft midsole cushioning.
The 1190 offers a dual-density post underfoot to provide support. Though firmer than the surrounding foam, we found the post material itself to be soft relative to the material used in other posted shoes providing a bit of pronation control. Testers were split on how much support they felt in the shoe; some noticed the shoe correcting their gait, others didn’t.
All testers agreed that the 1190 is a solid and versatile option for a lightweight daily trainer, with soft cushioning that allows for higher mileage, but in a weight category that can deliver performance when its time to pick up the pace.
The 1190 packs in a lot of cushioning and comfort for a shoe that feels this light.
Despite the soft post, I felt this shoe offered a lot more support than I usually find in a lightweight shoe.
Don’t let the looks of this shoe fool you. It may not look like it, but it’s definitely a solid performance trainer made for some smooth running.
