Salomon Speedcross 3 Product Review

Short Take

A shoe that's light and built for speed, the Salomon Speedcross 3 offers excellent traction on a wide range of surfaces.

Big Updates

  • Neutral Platform: The Speedcross 3 removes the pronation support that was found in the Speedcross 2.

Trail Test

The Speedcross 3 is built for long racing and training on the trails. The shoe is no longer a lightweight leader but our testers appreciated that the shoe feels fairly light, while providing a good amount of cushioning and plenty of traction on gnarly surfaces. The slipper-like fit and tread design combined to give testers confidence to push their limits on trail runs.

This shoe provides protection from a range of trail elements, and performs particularly well in wet, muddy and rocky conditions. Deep lugs provide unparalleled traction on mushy terrain, and grip like a billy goat on rocky surfaces. The Speedcross 3 is one of the most surefooted shoes we have tested.

The mesh upper does a good job of keeping out debris, and the mud guard helps keep feet protected. A Climashield version of the shoe is available, providing runners with a breathable, water-resistant upper.

Overall, the Speedcross 3 is a versatile trail shoe. It’s light for the amount of features it packs in, and offers superb traction. The shoe feels fast, thanks to a streamlined, racing fit in the upper and nicely responsive forefoot. And it’s hard not to feel overconfident when coming across mud, rocks and other trail hazards.

Runners Say

Of course you have Salomon’s fantastic build quality, and great comfort overall. The toebox is a bit narrow, and you may want to go up a 1/2 size if your feet tend to swell.

It's not the most breathable trail shoe available, but in return you get fantastic protection from dirt and debris.

No longer a light trail shoe, the Speedcross 3 continues to provide excellent grip and is ideal for long races.
