Comments: Full disclosure: I got a pair of these shoes as a LRS retailer for pretty much free. Therefore, naturally, I took them out and wear-tested the heck out of them. After a few runs on diverse routes that includes lots of single-track, dry and wet conditions, and a fair amount of hilly asphalt, I would say this is a good all-around shoe. It's not too much shoe for minimalists who want a mileage-trainer, and it's totally conventional enough for a traditionalist who wants something potentially lithe and nimble on the trails. I find it fits generally true to size, with maybe a hair more room in the toe box.

Comments: I am loving these shoes. They are light with a go fast feel. The lasting feels much more like a road flat than most trail shoes. I have found other North Face shoes to be a bit clunky and stiff, but the Ultra Trail has a much different feel to it. I found the Ultra Guide Trail to be a near miss because of the midsole design that limited (on purpose) some natural foot movement. The Ultra Trail has addressed that issue with a truly neutral midsole that provides adequate cushioning without getting in the way. The outsole provides excellent grip on a variety of surfaces including mud, ice and snow.
