Details:

For those new to minimalist running, the Nike Free Run 3 offers a welcome break from traditional running shoes. Its midsole is light and flexible, but still offers ample padding and protection from the road. The slightly lowered heel allows for a more natural footstrike, but has enough cushion for heel strikers as well. The upper is secure and stretchy, with an adaptable arch that wraps your foot for a personalized fit.

CUSHIONING

  • Phylite uses a lightweight midsole material designed for a resilient ride with enough durability to double as an outsole.
MIDSOLE
  • Phylite uses a lightweight midsole material designed for a resilient ride with enough durability to double as an outsole.
  • Crash pad at the bottom of the heel is a decoupled, gender-specific unit that reduces impact shock and corrects over pronation.
  • Nike Free sipes uses gender-specific flex grooves to allow barefoot-like flexibility and stability.
  • Transtarsal Flex Grooves are deep outsole cuts running diagonally under the midfoot area for increased flexibility and mobility.
UPPER
  • Nanoply is a seamless, ultra-thin upper material, that helps to support the foot in specific areas while allowing breathable stretch in other areas.
  • Free-specific mesh has a stitch-free design for breathable, barefoot comfort.
  • Dynamic Fit uses a supportive inner sleeve that wraps under the arch and around the midfoot for increased arch support and an adaptive fit.
  • Asymmetrical lacing wraps the foot to the shoe and relieves pressure over the top ridge of the foot.
  • Molded sockliner mimics the curvature of the foot for a closer fit and underfoot cushioning.
  • Strobel Last with the upper stitched to full-length fabric for a comfortable underfoot feel.
OUTSOLE
  • Waffle lugs built into the Phylite outsole compress on impact for increased cushioning.
  • BRS 1000 carbon rubber provides durable traction.

Comments: I like Free Run+ 2s more on the condition there is no tongue sliding around while I am running. However, I did like the 5.0 v4 midsole, and the volt colorway looks nice.
From: Malakai, Johannesburg, South Africa

Comments: Can't disagree more - I luv the return to the tongue and style of the 5.0 v4 - the bootie was an ill-conceived concept and suited none of the group I run with.
From: Bruce, Calgary, AB, Canada

Comments: I absolutely love the 2, I sent the 3 back (and bought another pair of 2's).  I don't know why they changed the no tongue, sock-like fit of the 2, which was perfect.  The 3 is softer, and bouncier, and still feels like a Free, but the tongue and lace area needs to go back to something more like the 2.

Comments: The 3 feels more cushioned than the 2, but I still like the overall fit and ride of the 2 better.  Adding the tongue was a mistake..
