INTRODUCTION

The Mirage 3 is a moderate feature, minimum support shoe designed for speedwork, racing and daily training. It is built with a semi-curved shape.

CUSHIONING

  • Heel ProGrid Lite is a grid-like foam piece that sits under the heel for lightweight shock absorption.
MIDSOLE
  • EVA+ is a full length composite foam designed for lightweight, durable cushioning.
  • Supportive TPU Arch is a thermoplastic unit in the midfoot that provides support for mild overpronation.
UPPER
  • Open Mesh covers the upper and is a breathable lightweight fabric.
  • Flex Film Overlays are made of a thin film that is welded to the upper for a snug, secure fit.

Comments: Upper feels really flimsy, almost papery. Do not like the tongue or the way this shoe feels on the top of my foot. Maybe I need to size down a half size. I took it on a couple of long runs and did not like the overall feel. It was kind of soft and mushy, not very responsive. I also had pretty bad plantar, shin, and knee pain after running in these. I'm a mild overpronator and these felt like they provided little to no stability. I also felt like the plastic bridge seemed to pound the bottom of my feet causing some really nasty soreness around the midfoot/forefoot area where I tend to strike. I will keep these around for short runs or when the weather is nasty. I recommend saucony taking a look at modifying the plastic shank support system, maybe shrinking the plastic and firming up some of the midfoot foam to give more stability and cut down on the pounding on your feet. I found the Mizuno Wave Sayonara to be a better alternative to this type of shoe even for a mild overpronator like myself.

Comments: I primarily run in Kinvara 3's but use the Mirage 3 for longer runs. This shoe is much more plush, and I credit the mild arch support for helping reduce my achilles pain after long runs. My only complaint is the comically-thick tongue which I'm sure will be corrected for the Mirage 4.

Comments: Really disappointed in changes to mirage 3. Switched to mirage 1 in 2011 from newtons and loved the shoe right out of the box. I credit it and the newton for curing me of plantar fasciatis that plagued me for over a year in both feet. The shoes were a perfect blend of low drop, cushion and support. Purchased the 3 earlier this year to replace last mirage 1 and immediately noticed achiness and soreness in my lower leg area (high ankle region front and back both legs). I thought shoes just needed a bit more break in period so I put in about 150 miles to give them a fair shakeoutt. Due to leg issues I decided to purchase Saucony Guide and immediately noticed improvement. I don't like the guide mainly due to higher heel height (8mm) but it was clear they are a better shoe for me. I am a mid foot striker, have been before it became the in-thing to do and really liked the 4mm height offered by mirage and peregrine trail shoes. As a test, I alternated between guide and mirage for two additional weeks and confirmed issues were due to mirage 3. My conclusion is that saucony removed some of the stability aspects of shoe that I needed. According to Saucony they increased flexibility, reduced the mid-foot bridge and I think the biggest change is they softend the midsole. This latter change is the biggest problem for me as it makes the shoe too compliant and I feel like I'm running in sand with each step, which is what I think was causing lower leg issues. Too bad. I plan to test the Saucony Cortana and see if it works better for me. I agree with the previous reviewer.

Comments: I had two pair of the Mirage 1, three pair of the Mirage 2, and I returned my only pair of Mirage 3. The upper material of the 3 is more flexible than the 2, but it seems to be much more snug which I did not like. The midsole was supposed to be slightly softer, however, I felt the opposite is the case. The three is more firm. I am stocking up on the Mirage 2 that I can find in my size. I do look forward to adding the Cortana 3 to my rotation.

Comments: Unfortunately the midsole of this shoe creates soreness in my plantar that used to never happen with previous versions of the shoe. I loved the Mirage 1, never tried the 2. And now the 3 is not looking good for me. Would love to hear if anyone else has had similar experiences.
