The midsole of the 909 is made up of ABZORB FL and ROCK STOP 2. ABZORB FL is New Balance's top of the line midsole foam that is an amazing blend of comfort and performance with DuPont Engage and isoprene rubber, providing the ultimate ride. ROCK STOP 2 is a flexible layer of high durometer EVA foam that is located between the outsole and the midsole. ROCK STOP 2 protects feet from rocks and shock, minimizes pressure, and disperses shock energy.

The upper of the new Balance 909 is packed with technology to make this shoe perfect for the trails. First up is the Water Resistant Synthetic/Mesh Upper to keep your feet dry and cool. The Tongue Gusset helps keep out debris. The Toe Protect gives your toes added protection from the elements found on the trail. SURE LACE shoe laces aid in keeping the 909's tied securely even under high performance or inclement conditions. To assist with comfort, the 909 uses Dual Density Collar Foam helps secure the heel and provides comfort around your heel. The upper is attached to the midsole by a FUll Length ABZORB Strobel Board for enhanced cushioning. The PHANTOM LINER provides a seamless liner next to the foot to minimize points of irritation and LIGHTNING DRY Lining is used to maximize moisture transfer. A performance fit is aided by NLOCK for a secure midfoot fit. The Ortholite Insert adds the right amount of cushion to the upper.

Ndurance rubber is a highly durable outsole material and is located along the lateral side of the shoe. An Aggressive Lugged Outsole aids in traction.
