Comments: I got the discounted blue and slime green version before they were gone, but even for $73, great shoe! History of shoes I'd compare this to/the type of shoe I was looking for and would put the Mana 6 into:
I used to love running in the old Asics DS Trainers when they first came out with spEVA. Super soft and responsive--springy. I had become more of a neutral foot-striker but was also tall and ran on a variety of surfaces, so the little bit of stability suited me. The weight was good, too, light enough that I could keep a good consistent pace on any run, especially long runs, and seamlessly transition into speedwork/intervals/hills at the end of a steady run workout. The week before setting a PR in the 2 Mile, I did a few 100m sprints at the end of some "peak" intervals, which I normally did in 13 secs or slower. With those shoes and my lighter workload, I was able to keep a quick turnover and hit 11.6 secs, twice (the second rep was to make sure I didn't screw up the timing). Because of its aggressive but comfortable fit, I had no trouble punching out a 4:46 Mile on pavement during a training run. The shoe, though, wasn't a racing flat, and so had a long enough life for my purposes.
Those are the kind of trainers I've looked for since. Asics keeps messing up the DS Trainers, using it as a test shoe for new unnecessary bells and whistles that thwart the feel--newest version is atrocious. And it keeps getting heavier. I used the New Balance 901s for awhile, and they were OK. Most other lightweight performance shoes also have some sort of special technology that gets in the way of smoother, faster running.
