Asics Gel Excel33 2 Product Review

Short Take

A neutral, everyday trainer with a twist of performance, the Asics Gel Excel33 2 delivers both a soft feel and a responsive ride, offering a great running experience.

Big Updates

  • FluidAxis: Diagonal flex grooves are strategically positioned in the heel to allow for the natural motion of the foot from footstrike through toe-off.
  • Increased Performance: The forefoot Gel unit has been removed for reduced weight and a faster feeling ride.
  • Improved Fit: Flexible overlays around the midfoot let the upper wrap around the foot for a more tailored and comfortable fit.

Road Test

When slipping on the Excel33 2, testers noticed the soft and supple mesh that rests over the forefoot, providing a seamless, slipper like fit. Flexible overlays mold around the midfoot for a close, customized fit, while a snug heel provides added security.

The midsole is dual-layered, featuring Asics’ softer SpEVA compound sitting atop a more responsive Solyte base. The result is a soft and cushioned underfoot feel that still delivers a snappy and responsive ride through toe-off. Where many shoes either deliver a firm and responsive ride or pillowy softness, our testers found the Excel33 2 to offer the best of both worlds for a great running experience.

Additionally, testers liked the broad and stable base of the shoe, as well as the full contact outsole, which offers a smooth ride for both midfoot and heel strikers. The outsole provides plenty of traction and is suitable for wet conditions and mild off-road use.

The Excel33 2 is a lively and snappy trainer that feels great during easy runs and even better when picking up the tempo. We think this shoe will be a welcome addition to the shoe lineups of runners looking for a simply great run.

Runners Say

“I typically run in a supportive shoe but I was just fine in the Excel33 2. I felt that the shoe worked with my foot and allowed my foot to move naturally.”

“The first Excel33 may have been a good shoe, but I think Asics has done a great job of honing the details to make an excellent update in this second version.”

“I’m a fan of the two-layered midsole. The soft underfoot feel keeps things cushioned and comfortable while the responsive ride makes the Excel33 2 a blast to run in.”
