Asics Gel Neo33 2 Product Review

Short Take

With a new and improved upper, the Asics Gel Neo33 2 packs a bit of pronation control with a flexible and responsive ride into a dependable trainer.

Big Updates

  • Redesigned Upper: The removal of several overlays makes for a more flexible fit and knocks a few ticks off the shoe’s weight.
  • Carryover Platform: The mid and outsole go unchanged in this update.

Road Test

The Gel Neo33 2 continues to be a competitor in the mild support trainer category. Utilizing both Asics’ plush Solyte and firmer SpEVA foam compounds in its dual-layered midsole, the Neo33 2 treats a runner to a nice bit of rebound for an energetic and responsive ride. Though the 11.1oz weight of the Men’s size 9 doesn’t scream performance, our testers were impressed at the swift sensation the shoe offered.

The upper undergoes a nice change in this update. Gone are the thick and rigid leathery-suede overlays of the original Neo (The Paleo?), replaced by thinner synthetic overlays, and fewer of them. The result: a more accommodating and less constrictive fit that will make a wider variety of feet happy.

With Gel units in the heel and forefoot, the Neo33 2 provides plenty of lasting protection from impact, and with deep flex grooves throughout the outsole, this shoe delivers a flexible and smooth transition from heel to toe. Expect the Neo33 2 to be a solid trainer for slight overpronators or neutral runners needing a touch of support during longer runs.

Runners Say

“The cushioning hits a nice sweet spot – it’s soft without being pillowy, and it has a bit of responsiveness to it.”

“The new upper is a huge improvement. It’s much more flexible than before, reducing hotspots and discomfort.”

“As a neutral runner, I didn’t feel the supportive post get in the way. Should be a good choice for runners whose arches begin to collapse over longer runs.”
