adidas adizero Tempo 5 Product Review

Short Take

Lighter and faster than ever, the adidas adizero Tempo 5 is a stability trainer with a heavy emphasis on performance, just as its name would imply.

Big Updates

  • Lighter Weight: The Men’s version drops a whopping 2oz from the Tempo 4 (10.5oz to 8.3oz, Men’s size 9), and nearly as much in the Women’s variety (9.3 to 7.5, Women’s size 9).
  • Lower Profile: Aside from breaking the 10mm heel to toe offset mark, the entire midsole is lowered, bringing the shoe closer to the ground.

Road Test

The Tempo is back in its 5th iteration, and the big story with this update (other than the eye catching colors, of course) is the shedding of several ounces from its previous version and a morph into a more performance-oriented form. We were more than eager to put the new Tempo through its paces and see what the newest version has to offer.

The Tempo 5 features a performance fit – that is to say, narrow and snug. Some testers did find the forefoot to carry a bit of wiggle room, though it is by no means wide or roomy. It should be noted that the upper lacks a soft inner layer, which increases breathability at the cost of having an abrasive upper material unsuitable for barefoot wear.

With the reduced offset of the Tempo, it has become friendlier towards midfoot strikers, though we found that it still accommodates heel strikers equally well. While the Tempo doesn’t have the smoothest transition we’ve experienced, we were impressed at how the Pro-moderator system can provide decent support without inhibiting a smooth transition as we’ve seen in some shoes with a more traditional post. Toe off is rewarded with mindboggling rebound, supplied by rigid plastic strips running through the forefoot.

Runners Say

Daniel

I like the lacing system on the Tempo 5. Not only does it have more eyelets than most shoes, but the placement of the laces makes for a great, customizable fit as well.

Joanna

This shoe made me want to midfoot strike; the heel-to-toe offset feels lower than it really is.

Taro

The ProModerator system provides a nice amount of support without feeling clunky or unsmooth. I like it better than most medial posts.
