Mizuno Wave Alchemy 12 Product Review

Short Take

The Mizuno Wave Alchemy 12 continues to deliver plenty of cushioning and excellent support for the moderate to heavy overpronator, now in a lighter package.

Big Updates

  • Refined Overlay Pattern: Mizuno used fewer overlays in this update to reduce the shoe’s weight by over half an ounce, while improving fit and support.
  • Carryover Platform: The mid/outsole goes unchanged from the previous version, offering the same stable and cushioned ride.

Road Test

Mizuno’s most supportive offering is back for its 12th iteration, sporting a brand new upper design that got a thumbs up with testers. A supportive heel cup locks the foot in place, reducing slippage despite the higher volume forefoot, which provides plenty of space for moving the toes around. The pliable mesh upper is easily flexible as well as breathable, providing lasting comfort. Also, a low cut heel collar allows for excellent range of motion and eliminates any irritation on the anklebone.

Stability is the name of the game with the platform of the Alchemy 12. Mizuno’s Wave Plate technology extending from the heel through the midfoot offers overpronation support without a clunky feel. In addition, the wide base net in the forefoot provides a stable platform for toe-off. The stability on offer is impressive and should accommodate all but the most severe overpronators.

In the cushioning department, the Alchemy 12 receives excellent marks. The Wave Plate disperses shock through landing, reducing the initial impact upon heelstrike enough to handle the long miles. Though the forefoot is not the most flexible, we found that it provides a good amount of responsiveness and rebound for an energetic toe-off.

Runners Say

Allie

This shoe offers more than its fair share of support. The cushioning is good - plenty of it without losing responsiveness or getting too pillowy.

Daniel

The overpronation support on the Alchemy 12 is impressive, especially for a shoe that doesn’t have a traditional post.

Taro

I’m a fan of the open mesh on the Alchemy 12. It is pretty pliable and breathable, almost delivering a sock-like feel on the foot.
