Inspired by the legendary Salomon Sense, the Sense Mantra is a cushioned model suitable for everyday training or door-to-trail running.
The Salomon Sense rocked the trail shoe world when released last year. Designed with ultra-running superstar Kilian Jornet, the Sense is a lightweight racing tool with a life of around 100 miles, not so good for training purposes. For that, there is the Sense Mantra – a cushioned and rugged counterpart to the Sense that shares many of its performance characteristics.
The cushioning of the Sense Mantra provides high mileage protection for longer distances on the trail as well as for some road use, perfect for getting out your front door and over to the local trailhead. On the trail, the rugged upper and underfoot rock plate protect the foot from trail hazards for a confident run on technical terrain.
Testers found the outsole to grip over a variety of trail types, though it performs best over dry and rocky trails. Multidirectional lugs provide excellent traction both up and down the hill, and the nimble feel of the shoe makes maneuvering over technical trails a breeze.
The Sense Mantra offers a snug, performance fit, especially around the midfoot, aided in part by the pre-equipped quick lace system. Though those with higher volume feet may find the fit to be slightly claustrophobic, testers found the fit to offer a secure feeling that gave them confidence on more unforgiving trails.
“The midsole is on the stiffer side, especially right out of the box. Fortunately, it becomes more flexible with mileage. Definitely a shoe that needs to be broken in.”
“The thicker overlays are noticeable around your foot, but they provide a good amount of protection from hazards on the trail.”
“For a trail shoe, I was surprised by the on-road runability of this shoe. Though the cushioning is on the firmer side, I could see efficient runners using this for pure road runs.”
