Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral Running Shoes

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stability Running Shoes

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

Product Details:

The ASICS Magic Speed 4 returns as the trusty, fast-day training companion runners have come to enjoy, now in an even more cushioned and premium package. In this latest version, runners are treated to an increased stack height, and get a taste of superfoam thanks to a highly responsive FF BLAST TURBO drop-in layer in the forefoot. This lightweight and resilient FF BLAST TURBO layer is encased by a reliable FF BLAST+ shell, delivering a cushioned and composed ride. A full-length carbon plate helps bring the foam to life, offering speed and efficiency when it's time to kick into gear.

Despite the added stack, runners will remain surefooted thanks to the shoe's slightly widened net base. This stability is paired with the sticky ASICSGRIP rubber outsole, providing full-length coverage for durability and confidence-inspiring traction. Additionally, the upper features a comfortable engineered mesh that wraps the foot with a secure lockdown, allowing you to maintain focus on hitting those splits!

Built to complement the METASPEED Paris racing models, the ASICS Magic Speed 4 delivers the fast and efficient ride that runners need during their speed workouts, ensuring they can keep burning rubber all training season long.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

There's Magic in the Magic Speed 4Stiff at the beginning but after about 30km in them they loosen up. This shoe is a blast. I'd say you need strong ankles and calves to compress the foam. Not as soft as the Metaspeed Sky Paris. Afterall, it is a trainer. Other than that I had no issues with this shoe. Its fun straight out of the box. I've taken it out on runs of 12km-17km. One workout so far and they shine. Did not regret buying.

2nd Run in my Magic Speed 4'sGood shoe. Lots of pop, but a bit firm. Everything that I've heard is that it softens up a bit eventually, so I'm hoping that holds true. Only negative comments, is the shoe is pretty tall. I feel like I need to be careful making sharp turns.

Sturdy Carbon trainerI’m a bigger runner and like sturdy carbon trainer for long runs and tempo runs. 12 &18 miler on these shoes and so far so good. They fit a little snug in the forefoot width so I lace them a little looser. Likely to wear these for Boston.

Not exactly what I expectedThe shoe was not as soft as I hoped for. You can definitely pick up the pace. Some will like the stiffer midsole. The upper was great. Lockdown great. Generous toe box. However, the midsole was stiff. I personally would not do more than 10 miles in this shoe.

Not bad, but a departureThere have been 4 Magic Speeds. I have put hundreds of miles on each iteration. Not one has been like the others. I've enjoyed each one but for different reasons and different uses. It's hard to say they are improving - every time a new one comes out it seems like it should be it's own new model. I think of the four versions, the original and version 3 have a similar profile and use case. Both are light, low(ish) to the ground, and quick to turn over. This newest version 4 is better than v2, but feels similar on foot especially in the sense that they feel disconnected from the ground. I thought v3 made a great 5k/10k racer, but this v4 feels like they were trying to make a thick, plated "super-trainer" to compete with Boston 12, Kinvara Pro, Deviate Nitro etc. If Version 3 was a nimble sports car, this is more of an SUV with a sports-car badge. Enjoyable experience (though the foam and outsole are noisy and "chuff" like ZoomX shoes) but feels like a completely different product from the excellent version 3.

Great shoe for marathon trainingI bought the Magic Speed to replace my Nike Zoom Fly for marathon training. The Asics are lighter, more responsive and more comfortable over long miles than the Nike. The bright yellow color is an added bonus so cars can see you better.

Fast, but the blisters...These are definitely faster than my standard training shoe. I can feel the extra spring from the carbon plate. These also have some cushion in them so they are kind of a wierd cross betweeen a race shoe and a training shoe. My only issue with them is the back comes up higher than most of my shoes and rubs on my achilles behind my foot. Doesn't matter how tall your socks are, they will leave a blister. Some second skin solves the problem.

Great Primary Working shoe!Doing a 12- week training marathon plan and have been using these bad boys for my primary Wednesday track workouts and weekend long run workouts with marathon pace built in. So far they feel great. Can handle faster 5k interval speed in them and marathon pace is starting to feel effortless in them. I like the bounce in them and they do feel fast. Sized up as I often have issues with black & blue toenails and thanks to wide toe box no issues so far. I wanted a fast shoe to crush marathon pace in but not have to wear a super shoe for training. These were the perfect find.

Fit is everything!!These shoes are beautiful and transfer weight giving forward momentum and fluid movement effortlessly. I was able to accomplish this keeping my distances short under three miles per run. I did not do any long runs due to comfort. The key for all of this is in the fit. I have feet that are very normal in width. I found these shoes at normal width to be slightly snug, but that did not pose a real challenge to running. Half way through my first run my lateral malleolous on both ankles started catching with the shoe. Other than that the shoe felt great! I tried re-lacing the shoes without using the locking stitch and different tying styles. It did help with comfort to some degree. However, the heal would not stay stable in the shoe thus defeating the purpose of the carbon plate. I tried putting in an extra insert into the shoe and it worked for the heel fit and I had a nice run. However, the insert made the toe box too tight. Wide width shoes were not available. Using just a heal cup made the heel drop difference from heel to toe too great. If only they could have made the lateral side of the shoe a couple millimeters lower to allow space under the malleolous for comfort. I also had an issue with the shoe pulling my socks down into my shoe during my first run. I tried a different type of socks and it helped quite a bit. I think this shoe is a great fit under the foot. This shoe is a little unstable. The base needs to be a little more wide. Run on flat surfaces and avoid running down steep inclines. My issue is all about the fit. If you can get a good fit, you will definitely enjoy the ride.

High Performance ShoeI have always been a big fan of the Asics Superblast as a workout/race shoe. This is my first time trying one of the Asics Carbon Plated shoes and it doesn't disappoint. I use the Asics Magic Speed for workouts and/or races only and stick with the Asics Novablast series for easy/long run days. My first workout in the Magic Speed consisted of a longer cutdown run. I had to hold back the first few miles because of how fast the shoes felt. The shoes help me to execute a smooth turnover and also promote better recovery for later sessions. Regardless of the controversy behind Carbon Plated technology, the shoes add a level of enjoyment to the sport of running/racing. Obviously, they aren't intended to be used for every run in training, but they get me excited for days when the purpose is to run fast. I've been wearing Asics since early middle school and they have yet to disappoint. Within even the last five years Asics has rapidly modernized their running shoes. Their products are durable and long lasting. I don't have any plans to switch to another brand in the coming future.

One of my favorite tempo platformsThe Magic speed platform has been a staple for my ability to put down longer mileage at near-race efforts while limiting fatigue due to the overall construction and responsiveness of this shoe. I can hold form and fatigue less, the fit is perfect and they wear very well. I have always used these at least 2 times weekly in preparation for major events.

A ok shoe I feelThis ASIC shoe was ok for me but I had one big complaint with it. The lockdown was great , love the taller stack height and I could feel the bounce effect really good especially when I picked up the pace and did some speed work. My one big dislike and this could just be due to the fact I’m a older runner and my feet have a lot of running miles on them , but this shoe was just to Ridgid and stiff for me. All thru the 80s and 90s I was a big ASICS fan about all I wore but their shoes are just too hard and stiff feeling for me now.

ImpressiveA big improvement over the previous version. The midsole updates make it more suitable for longer distance runs, and the small weight gain is an acceptable tradeoff, IMO. In terms of comfort, performance, and price, I find it similar to the Adidas Boston 12. The Magic Speed's upper, in terms of functional design, construction, and aesthetics, gives it an edge over the Boston. It's also a bit lighter. Finally, if it matters to you (it does to me), Asics doesn't outsource its manufacturing to the PRC.

Awesome Training shoesFirst, I wear my Magic Speed shoes on Saturday, on long runs when I’m running some tempo miles on the middle; shoes are light and comfortable, so worth it! What I like the most is that you get a carbon fiber plate, shoe is well constructed. I’m so glad I gave ASSICS an opportunity for new shoes! Thinking about getting a second pair!

Best of the Magic Speed by far!I am a heavy runner and found the original Magic Speed hard on my legs with no spring. The Magic 3 was a vast improvement. But this on is the best. I rotate this with the Puma Deviate Nitro 3 and the 361 ELEOS. All great fast trainers.

YIKES! swing and a miss on this one AsicsI have all 3 prior versions of Magic Speed shoes (2 pairs of each) and this one isn't even close to the others. Tried the left one on and immediately said no thanks. Fit was too big and thought i was wearing a high heel shoe or boot. Why do these manufacturers have to keep messing with things.
