My Altra Escalante 3These fit just like described. They have a nice soft feel and have reasonable cushion.
Great training shoeThese are my fourth pair of altras. I love having a zero drop shoe in my training rotation and these are nice because they’re super light and I need space in the toe box. No complaints.
Too narrowMy daughter has run happily in Escalantes for many years and absolutely loved them. I bought version 3 for her recently, and the upper in this edition is stiffer and more narrow compared to earlier models, and makes the sides of her feet hurt. It seems that the “better lockdown” in version 3 advertised by Altra is a euphemism for “we are abandoning the customers who enjoyed the roomy fit of our shoes in the past, and are now prioritizing the narrow-footed market instead.” Disappointing.
Grudgingly approvedPerhaps not the most helpful review but I'll let you be the judge of that. My wife uses running shoes predominantly for 4-5 mile walks on trails. She is very, shall we say picky. I previously recommended Hoka speed goats and she liked them until she didn't. The stack height began causing stability issues, turning an ankle on rocks, tree roots, etc. I have used a multitude of different shoes for ultras and thru hikes and told her I thought Altra would work well for her and I surprised her with a pair of Escalantes. Her first reaction was that they look like clown shoes due to the wide toe box. She asked me about the return policy and then put them on and went on a 5 mile hike. She loves them. Most comfortable shoe ever type of praise. I'll take it.

Perfect everyday / speedwork shoeThe Escalate has become my go-to shoe for my mid-week runs and half marathons. Perfect right our of the box, as long as you are already good with zero-drop. It's not quite enough cushion for me to want to do an entire marathon, but I would if I forgot my Torins lol. I love the Torin for long runs and the marathon.
Great running shoeRight out of the box a great shoe for every day runs. Toe box has nice room for toes to move. Overall a nice light shoe with just enough cushion.
Solid Road ShoeFirst, I am a dedicated Lone Peak runner. However, I needed a road shoe. so I started with the Rivera. It was too soft and plushy. In spite of some questionable reviews about the Escalante 3, I decided to try it. I'm very pleased. It has enough cushion for marathons (at least for me) and has a solid feel. The toe box is comfortably wide, and the trim fit through the mid-foot and heel is just right for marathons.
Almost, but not quiteI found the fit of the shoe to be awkward, especially the mid foot flex. Too stiff for my liking and I had to return them.
