Product Details:

Made for serious trail athletes, the Mont Blanc BOA is a resilient racing option for runners taking on longer distances or ultra marathons. The shoe's upper features a unique lacing technology called the BOA Fit System. The micro-adjustable laces are optimally placed to give the Mont Blanc a fully customizable fit, allowing you to get your ideal lockdown in seconds. This lacing system is combined with the brand's Standard fit which offers Altra's signature foot-shaped toebox without sacrificing a more performance-oriented lockdown at faster paces.

For ultimate performance on race-day, the Vibram Lite outsole is strategically placed to give runners a trustworthy grip in the lightest package possible, and the highly cushioned EgoMax foam midsole feels energetic and bouncy underfoot while still having the protection needed for technical trail runs. No matter the distance, the new Altra Mont Blanc has what it takes to carry runners to their fastest known time in one piece.

Technologies

MIDSOLE

  • Altra EgoMax midsole is a compound designed with excellent resilience, providing high levels of durability and responsiveness.
  • Natural Ride System (NRS) design includes a more natural, foot-shaped last, zero millimeter heel-to-toe drop, and metatarsal-specific shapes in the outsole to assist in proper foot mechanics and allow for more natural foot movement.
  • Standard Foot Design follows a slightly thinner design that is still roomy for ultimate comfort.

OUTSOLE

  • Vibram Lite outsole has a phenomenal grip in strategically placed areas keeping weight at a minimum.

UPPER

  • BOA Fit System allows runners to dial in their fit, feeling locked in and confident in all trail conditions.
  • Gaiter Trap is a velcro strap that secures trail running gaiters to the shoe, preventing debris from building up beneath the shoe (matching gaiter sold separately).
  • Race-Inspired Upper is lightweight, thin, and allows runners to stay locked in while traversing different types of terrain.

Heel Slip comments are right!I'll start with - I am in love with the BOA system. However, the heel slip on these is no joke. I want to love these shoes so much... so I am trying to add heel pads to see if that will help. The shoe is very stiff - which is different for me since I mostly opt for Superior or Escalante. I am still gonna try to give these a go with the added heel pads. I'm struggling to find Altra's that I love as much as I once did. The quality and designs have been evolving away from what made me love Altra. I am glad I did not buy these at full price!

Altra misses the markIf you're looking for a typical Altra fit, continue looking. The Mont Blanc deviates from the roomy toe box and felt very tight out of the box. It loosens a bit over time but will not achieve the same comfort level as the Lone Peak or Olympus. The heel cup was a disaster with the first edition and still has not been addressed at all in this edition. It is extremely loose and you can't tighten the BOA dials enough to secure the heel.

Light, nimble, and adjustable on the fly. This shoe is light weight and responsive. So it honestly works for easy days as well as big mountain runs. The BOA system makes it really simple to loosen up or tighten the fit. I keep them loose on the uphill but like a little firmer fit on the downhills. It's also easy to use if your fingers are cold. No more stopping and fidgeting around with laces to adjust the fit or when they come untied on their own. It seems like a small thing but I'm really enjoying the ease of making those adjustments. I know some people have commented on the heel portion but after a few runs to loosen them up the fit around the heel improved.

Wide, mismatched, but I liked it.This was my first pair of Altra's or any Zero drop shoe. I'd give Altra 5 stars for the foam and tread. Overall I really liked the shoe. For me though, they were a little wide. Even for ultra distances, I thought it was a bit of a mismatch because the light weight, tread, and lock-in from the boa would make this awesome for long days on technical terrain. They never felt heavy, even at the end of a run, which was fantastic. But there was so much slop in the forefoot for me that I felt I needed to overcompensate by locking in the boa too tightly. Which led to the Boa itself. I love Boa's, but this shoe really needs a newer Boa dial that offers micro adjustment in both directions. Being able to loosen the shoe a couple of clicks at a time as your feet swell would really fit its purpose. Rather than having to release the entire dial and tighten it again. For longer distances, I think I could use a little more stiffness in the mid-foot too. A little too much flex going uphill when I passed the 60 mins mark into a long run. I put >50km on these in two runs, so managed fine, but noticed it in the 2nd half of the runs. Finally, minor, but I could use a closer ankle collar. I ended up with bits and pieces in my shoes over the course of long runs. Maybe just my skinny ankles... If I'd choose only two improvements, they would be the narrower foot shape and two-way boas. I'm looking forward to trying the Outroad 2 for its narrower last, but not thrilled looking at the weight of it coming from the Mon Blanc Boa. I have the 12.5 mens in the Mon Blanc so weight adds up for me.

Durability doesn't match the priceThe right upper just started to separate from the sole at 277 miles; 75 cents a mile seems a bit steep to me, pretty disappointing. I otherwise love this shoe, but the durability is just not where it needs to be, especially for the cost. If 75 cents a mile isn't a big deal to you, then the shoe is great.

I so desperately wanted to like it...Altra can be so weird. This is a zero drop shoe that doesn't feel zero drop, with a wide toe box that doesn't feel wide, but is still ultimately a good shoe? The fit is definitely not the spacious Altra fit I'm used to from my Escalante 2.5s and Lone Peak 5 & 6s, but it's still a more natural fit than most shoes. Although I'm sure it's technically zero drop, there is extreme rocker geometry, which can be good or bad depending on what you want, but either way the forefoot of the shoe is pretty stiff. Traction was fine. Midsole was fine, but for the price you want better than fine. The Boas are likely going to be a huge hit or miss depending on your foot. I was overall able to get adequate lockdown, but given how unstructured the back of the shoe is it's not like the boas were doing anything special. In fact, at a certain point there are diminishing returns because although they can still go tighter, the increased tightness is specific just to the midfoot, and there's no real way to change that. Also, on my right foot the front-most boa often caused some subtle aggravation on the knuckle of my little toe. Overall, the shoe isn't bad, but at that price point it just wasn't worth it for me and I returned.

Training for US Speedgolf ChampionshipsI really enjoy the BOA system on the Altra shoe, I'm all for no shoe laces. The Mont Blanc is very heavy on cushion which my feet and body appreciate as I've been logging a lot of miles getting ready for the US Speedgolf Championships and the Speedgolf World Championships just around the corner. The shoes are comfortable and provide the support and stability that I need on the course. I look forward to Altra coming out with other color options and I'd recommend removing white from the color scheme, after one round in the Mont Blanc the white has turned to brown and the shoes looked old and worn after a very short period.

So far, so good. This is a quick review as I only have two 4 hour runs in these so far. Run one was a trail run with rocks and roots and lots of small hills etc. I was worried about heel slip, I cinched them down, and I did not notice any. I tightened the front a bit too much on one foot, it's easy peasy; reach down, pop it loose, re-tighten not so tight. They are noticeably lighter than my Olympus 4's, definitely feel like a race shoe. Run two was a mixed gravel road hilly run with a bit of pavement. I did get a rock in my left side, it's amazing how easy it is to remove the shoe, and put it back on. If it were laces I might have toughed it out. Looking good so far for UTMB/TDS in a couple weeks, I'll get a bit more running in them before that. Pros: light, decent grip so far, comfy, easy to put on and take off. Feel secure and easily adjustable. Cons: no velcro or attachment points for gaiters, the little traction siping on the sole (especially the forefoot) seems to be wearing down after only 32 miles.
