Product Details:

HOKA’s Clifton 9 is a neutral everyday running shoe that boasts comfort and a low weight as its core principles. This iteration of the Clifton has been rejuvenated with an updated, lighter weight yet more responsive, CMEVA foam for a revitalized underfoot experience, and an additional 3mm of foam has been added in the stack height, enhancing cushioning without increasing the shoe's weight. The updated outsole design offers a high-level of durability and control on the road while a gusseted tongue offers a more secure fit and protects against rogue debris getting into the shoe. Finally, all these features are paired with HOKAs signature early-stage meta-rocker which delivers a smooth ride at any pace making the HOKA Clifton 9 a tried-and-true daily trainer that any runner or walker can enjoy.

What You'll Love:

  • Increased stack height offers a softer landing
  • More energetic running experience

Great ShoesI have had other Hoaks and without rubber on bottom, they wear out very quickly. These have plenty of rubber on outsole, very comfortable and will last a while!

Depends on the wearHaving bounced around between multiple brands searching for a new trainer after both Adidas and Mizuno did unspeakable things to the Bostons and Wave Riders, I experimented with joining the growing camp of runners who have enjoyed success with the Hoka One One Cliftons. For me, the shoe is a tale of two mileages, one of which being the first 100-200mi, and the other being everything else. When I first wore the shoe I was surprised by how little of the “platform” look was actually noticeable. Make no mistake, there is a lot of shoe there, but it didn’t feel like it. Similarly the 5mm offset was a bit less than I was used to, but it certainly didn’t feel like it. I still got the sense of being rocked forward on my toes, and although it lacked the snap of my typical workout shoes, it also wasn’t the marshmallow I was expecting. Over time however, this was the big change for me. While I initially would have quantified them as “comfortably firm”, as they wear in, I found them to grow softer and softer, to the point where it felt like more of an impediment than a boost. Similarly, I also felt as though I was sitting “deep” in the shoe, with a significant amount of heel collar grasping my ankle. While I enjoyed the shoe at first and would certainly consider them on short runs during double sessions, they’re not going to be a shoe I reach for particularly often.

Comfort CushionThe Clifton 9 is a solid, comfortable, and smooth riding shoe. I've tried shoes from many different brands as I yearn for cool new shoe tech, but always finding myself coming back to the Clifton as it just seems to fit my feet and stride well. Version 9 is my favorite Clifton, having started with the 6. It works great for my easy, daily, and recovery runs a reliable cruiser. I went with the Wide version, and its a great fit all around. Highly recommended!

HOKAMANIA!!I have been wearing Clifton’s for 6 years now. HOKA is the only sneaker I will wear. As a 51 year old ex competitive HS and Collegiate runner w bad ankles and a recently replaced ACL, HOKAs have extended my days as a runner. I even wear them around the house and at work. I am a PE teacher and I am on my feet all day. 6 pairs of Clifton’s are in my closet as I write this. I wore Nike for over 30 years. Once I tried HOKAS I never wore Nike again. Nothing compares….Cant wait to get my next pair!

Super Comfortable ShoeI bought this shoe for my husband who injured his foot at work (probably had a fracture) but refused any medical help. Fast forward after a few months he was walking with an abnormal gait. I've have several Hokas and once I found the style that fit me, I was in love with the brand so I decided to try the Clifton 9 for him. Wow! He loves them and his gait is normal. The only downside is that he now walks so fast in these shoes I almost have to jog to keep up with him! LOL.

Great everyday road shoeI love the fit and feel of the Clifton for an everyday shoe. I wear them on road, bike trail and flat dirt. The fit is very similar to the Speedgoat, so if that's your trail shoe and you need a road shoe, it's a no-brainer. I like the width in the toebox on the wide version. Not all shoes have that option and it really helps. I really just need the extra room in the toebox and the wide version accommodates well.

My go to for every day milesI'm extremely happy Hoka starting expanding their Wide shoe offering because now I can actually wear their shoes without my toes being cramped. I'm a E width foot, and the wide option is perfect. This is my second pair of Clifton 9's and getting ready to order a 3rd pair. I run on average 50 miles per week so I'm getting a lot of time in these shoes. Around 200 miles is when I start to feel them losing their pop and by 250 to 300 mile marker, my legs tell me I need a new pair. Highly recommend as a daily trainer and long run shoe.

Wide Foot Fam!I’ve never been able to wear Hokas because they are SO narrow. Now that they have a wide foot option, I can actually wear them and not feel like my feet are being squeezed. I have a 100 miles on the shoes and they keep getting better. Great for everyday miles and you can pick up the tempo in these as well. Highly recommend

Clifton 9I've been running in Cliftons for over 5 years and they never disappoint. I even ran in the very first Clifton when they rereleased them several years ago. I run in other shoes from season to season, but always come back to the Clifton. Been having some plantar issues in my heel with some New Balance and got these to get me back on track. They are just as comfortable and stable as always. This is a great neutral runner with just the right amount of cushion. The are also always one of the lightest shoes in the Hoka lineup so a perfect trainer.

Nice but Causing Ankle PainHave had many Hoka Cliftons in the past. Most, but not all fit and feel great right out of the box. This pair is not one of those. The shoe seems to dig into my ankle/instep. I have to keep the top part of the shoelace loose. I'm hoping it will soften over time, but already have 93mi on the shoes and they are still stiff.

Great distance shoe.I purchased these shoes for a half marathon I had registered for. I know you're never supposed to run a race in new shoes, especially a longer one, but I did. These were one of the most comfortable pair of shoes I've ever run in. And after my race, my feet felt good. Definitely love this shoe.

Not for running efficientlyI find these to be very bulky like most Hoka shoes. I normally wear a Saucony endorphin speed or pro. These make it a lot more work to run in. Fairly comfortable just not efficient

Love theseI'm not a marathoner or even run in competitive races, I run for fitness. These shoes have been perfect. I've run for years but being in my 50's, my knees are catching up to my age. These shoes offer the perfect cushion while still being light enough to allow my legs to continue to push me forward. Love these shoes.

Only One ComplaintI have been wearing Cliftons for the last 6 cycles of running shoes. I always order wide even though I don’t have wide feet…If I don’t, I get a lot of rubbing on the inside of my big toe and ball of foot. My only complaint is how fast the outsole wears down. On the ball of the foot, I will wear thru the outsole rubber in 250 miles.

always a good shoeI have run in every iteration of the Clifton. This one is a good as the last and the one before that.. The upper changes are minimal, more just tweaks to the material and seam locations, IMO. The key piece, that Clifton underfoot feel, remains as always. I use these for tempo runs, road intervals and the occasional uptempo long run. I get close to 300 miles on them before noticeable cushion degradation. To be fair, I run in Hoka's exclusively, as they just seem to work for me.

Clifton 9This is the first Clifton that I’ve put on and it didn’t feel great. I’m not sure if it’s the tongue of the shoe or around the top eye holes that are thicker that makes it a bit uncomfortable. I have to adjust quite a bit before and during my wear time. I also don’t love the little lighter black accents on my black shoe. I have been so pleased with past hoka Clifton’s. This just didn’t earn top marks in comfort or esthetics. Please go back to your original simplistic comfort.

Hoka Clifton 9First running shoe I've ever put on that felt that soft, comfortable, and perfectly fit to my foot the very first time I put them on. Very comfortable to walk in, by the way. But, I also use these for street runs because they are so well cushioned and padded. Being as cushioned as they are I was pleasantly surprised to find some structure & stability too. After just a few runs now, my hip & knees can definitely tell a difference! I simply don't feel the pain when done anymore - amazing. The Brooks GTS I run in on the trails are great shoes - but, they can't compare to the comfort of the Hoka's on street runs. Even though this is just my first pair of Hoka's, I would highly recommend them - I'm very impressed.

Hoka Clifton 9Big improvement over the Clifton 8, which rubbed and bruised my inner heel. Now the Clifton is nearly perfect, the sole could wear longer, but I guess you have to expect to give up durability to get all that cushioning. Great shoe!

No longer a Hoka fan.I have been wearing Cliftons since the 6 model and loved them. The last few updates have been awful. The 8's began the changes. They started streamlining so much that I had to go up a half size and to a wide, which I have very skinny feet with no volume, which seemed to help. Now with the 9's I was able to go back to a B width but the upper material is so flimsy that I can pinch it. There is no support in it. On the sides where the upper meets the foam is now indented which leaves even less support and I am having arch pain. I am ready to try other brands.

Clifton 9Always wore Clifton 8. They are no longer available so ordered the Clifton 9. They’ve done something to the toe box design and they don’t fit right anymore. Very disappointed. I am not sure what I will move to, but it won’t be the Clifton 9.

Cliftons are not cushyBecause my feet are so orthopdeically-imparied (and old), I require high levels of cushion. I had Cliftons in the past and liked them. However, this time they did not give me an immediate sense of "ah." I decided to return them and go with the Bondi 8 in wide.

Excellent cushioning but toe box is crampedI’ve owned the previous versions of the Clifton and they have been comfortable and durable. I use them as a walking shoe and not running. The Clifton 9 has great cushioning but the toe box is a little cramped compared to the older versions. After wearing them a while they have improved. I would give them 5 stars except for the smaller toe box.

Great cushionI love the Cliftons. The Clifton 9 is a bit more on the "clunky" side as the sole up on the toe base seems wider. I think my favorite is the Clifton 8 because they don't appear to be as wide in the sole. I LOVE the cushion in the Clifton and am very pleased with how the cushion has stayed true to the Clifton through all the other changes.

The Familiar CliftonFeels a lot like the Clifton 8. I have them in a rotation currently with a pair of Clifton 8s and I can't really tell the difference. That's not a bad thing, the 8 is a great shoe too. Not surprisingly, this is a great shoe for easy runs, especially longer ones. It can feel a little unstable if you try to hit the gym for a lift after your run. This shouldn't surprise anyone based on the stack height and the amount of cushion. At the end of the day, it's an excellent running shoe that should be used for running (or walking if you're into that). If you're looking for a shoe to take out on your longer, easy cruising runs this is a great candidate.

Especially when I replace them every few months and usually try and have two on hand at a time.

Immediately comfortableI purchased these shoes after a recommendation from an avid running friend. I used to be an avid runner but am just getting back into it and wanted a shoe that provided a lot of support while running. Especially since I'm in the process of losing weight and running can be hard on your joints. These shoes felt comfortable from the first step. They have a wide toe box for added comfort. I'm not running fast, but felt like I was gliding through my run because of the spring in these shoes. Highly recommend!!

Good long run shoeI wear the Clifton when I am doing 10+ mile runs. They are soft and springy enough to make it so my feet and legs aren’t killing after a long run day. I do notice a difference in fit slightly between the colors, this is my third pair. I run average 50 miles a week. I will buy them again. I don’t use them for races because they aren’t as snappy as I like for speed.

HokasThese shoes took longer than usual to break in. Like all the Hokas I've tried (Clifton 8, Rincon), they have a nice cushion, and I enjoy them for longer runs. They hit my foot and ankle in a couple of difficult places, I think because they seem to be taller than some of the other ones I've worn. It took awhile for them to be comfortable in the front, as I have a wider foot, and the first few times I wore these I was in a lot of pain and even tore holes in the toe of one of my socks. I also got a pretty big blister on my left big toe. After adjusting the laces several times and running in them for a couple of weeks, they're working well, but they still hit my right foot in an awkward spot due to the height of the mouth of the shoe. For the amount that I paid for them, I find them disappointing, but this is unusual for the brand, as I haven't had this issue in the past.

Cliftons 3 &7 are still my favorite.I started with Clifton 3. Cliftons 4- 5 didn't work for me. Clifton 7 was great as well. Now 8-9 did not work either. I found them to heavy on my feet and my speed reduced tremendously. I need another pair of clifton7.

Best show on earth.. Period.I've been running on a competing shoe for over a decade and decided to try a Hoka, so I picked up a pair of Carbon X2s.. I ran on them through duration of training for a 70.3 and loved them. It was time for a new pair and I wanted something with a little more stability for a 140.6 full IM. The Clifton 9 has delivered and I have to say it is the best shoe I've ever owned. Nice work HOKA; looking forward to continuing to be a loyal customer. Bravo

Fit is good- the durability is not so greatI like the Clifton 9. They protect my feet, and the heel to toe transition is smooth and almost effortless. I mean my legs don’t have to struggle and strain to move the shoe along (unlike the Altra Torin and Topo Phantom where every step is a chore). The outsole rubber has worn down quickly on outside heel strike area. Just over 100 miles, the rubber pealed back completely on the left. I tried gluing it back and it would only come lose during the run. Since it was flapping against the ground, I cut it off. I’ve run about 50 miles on the exposed rubber and I think I can go another 50 before it wears down enough to affect my stride. I might get more miles than that. The fit of the Clifton 9 is what I like most. I no longer have to wear a wide and use the runners loop to lock down the heel. The toe box is wide enough for me to wear the D width and I tie them without the loop. It’s a very comfortable shoe. I’m not a fan of the additional 3 mm of midsole foam. It makes them a tad stiffer and less stable than the Clifton 8 which had 37 mm -32 mm of midsole. The additional 3 mm may be making my knees a little sore. I did not have his issue with the Clifton 8. The additional stack height just seems unnecessary when there is the Bondi. My bottom line is that I will likely buy and pair of the Clifton 9’s and hope the peeling rubber was a fluke and my knees adjust to the additional 3 mm of stack height.

Something changed for the worse with these? This is my third pair of Cliftons. I had 40 miles on these before wearing them for IRONMAN Lake Placid (2023). Part way through the marathon, I felt pressure on toe nails of both my big toes. Did not pay attention to it. After the race had blood blisters under both toe nails. This has never happened to me before. Been running in Nike, Asics, and Altra, both road and trail. This marathon was not my first marathon or my first long course. After two weeks off of running to let toes come back to normal. I wore all three pair of Cliftons on consecutive runs. This Clifton 9 is the only one that is making my toes hurt. IDK if it's just this pair and there is something unusual about the toe box...maybe too little material in uppers?

Walking in PillowsI’m 68 years old and I walk (around the track) 3 - 4 miles each day. I heard about HOKA’S through a friend. Without a doubt, this is the most comfortable sneaker I’ve ever worn on my feet. It’s like “walking on air”. I chose the Clifton 9 model with a wide width. I currently have 6 different colors, one more pair and I’ll have one for every day of the week. When I’m wearing them, people often ask “are they light (as in weight), stable, comfortable, etc.” I tell them this sneaker “checks all the boxes”

Only good for neutral runnersHave had good results using neutral shoes even being an overpronator. After 90 miles my left shoe has compressed severely on the inside. I understand it's not recommended for overpronators. The comfort level is good for a neutral runner and it's a good daily trainer shoe.

Good TrainerI've been running exclusively with Brooks and Asics since 2005. Given all the rave reviews of the Hoka's (including my own mother) I thought I would try the Clifton's out. There is definitely a lot of cushioning in this shoe. While it is a good daily trainer, I found it a bit heavy for my liking. The rocking back and fourth was really strange to get used to as well. This may work for a lot of other runners, but I'll be switching back to Asics.

Wear for at least 12 hr a day.I am on my feet for at least 12 hrs a day. I read Hoka 9 is better than Hoka 8 in regards to the cushion. It is not! The insole is hard. Thank God i only wear my sneakers once a week. Hoka 8 insole has cushion that my feet love. I'll stick with the 8s.

Better than the Clifton 8These shoes are much better for what Im looking for than the Clifton 8, but I still think this is where I part ways with the Cliftons. In truth, the Clifton 8 was going to be my last go at the Cliftons but I heard a lot about improvements in 9 so, I said one more time. In truth, it is better all the way around, the fit, energy return, the plush feel, all good things. Pro's: - Nice plush ride with some energy return. - Upper fits very nicely. - Fits the role of a decent daily trainor very well. - Good looking shoe. - This version is definately the best looking Clifton version for me so far. Con's: - The Cliftons line has just been to volitile for me. From one year to the next, it is either very average, really good, or just plain awful. - 5mm Drop - I think that this shoe is much better at the 4mm drop. But this is very personal preference. All in all, part of my rating is very much influenced by the entire Clifton experience I have had since version 1. There have been several versions I did not try, but still tried 5 of the nine version so far. If anything, before buying any Clifton, if it is possible, try a pair on if they are available for you locally. That has been one of my frustrations, the Clifton is somewhat unique for me in that the reviews either way have not reflected my personal experience and from version to version I can go from really liking them to just regretting buying them.

Pretty GoodI have used 20-25 pairs of Clifton’s and have loved each version. However, for me, the Clifton 9 takes a half-step backwards, because it’s just too soft, even on roads. I do appreciate the idea of making a super-soft and cushioned road shoe, just not this squishy.

Extremely PleasedFINALLY a Hoka Clifton that is wide enough for my wide foot! I've been trying every iteration of Clifton since the beginning and they have never been wide enough for me. Even the so-called Wide version. Bondi is too much soft cushion but Clifton is just the right amount. These shoes are freaking fantastic! So good I bought three pair already and thinking about stocking up more. Not only are they great for my daily runs they were perfect walking around Italy the past 7 days. We walked around 8-10 miles every day and not once were my feet tired. I'm beyond happy with these!

Comfortable trainerI run about 40mi per week and the Clifton 8 was my go-to. The 9 version has a wider toe box (the Clifton 8 was so narrow that I used to order a men's wide), but the underfoot cushioning is stiffer than the Clifton 8. I have a Mortons neuroma that is sensitive to change in cushion level. The upper is also thicker and stiffer. This provides more stability to the shoe, but also rubs the sides of the forefoot more. Overall, it is a great shoe if you're looking for a comfortable trainer or an every-day shoe.

Comfort and supportThe HOKA Clifton 9 is the most comfortable running shoe I’ve had. It is also extremely supportive and keeps my feet straight no side to side leaning/rocking. It transitions from walking to running easily without feeling mushy. I previously had the Clifton 7 which I was happy with and then wore too long before I replaced them with the 9s. The 9s are even better.

Clifton 9The Clifton 9 is light weight yet offers optimal support and cushion. The fit was true to size and did not require time to break in. I just completed a 10 mile race, it was my 3rd time to wear the shoe. Due to the cushion and support, I did not have hip or joint soreness after the race. The Clifton 9 is a great shoe for short or long distance running / walking.

why????Ive been a loyal Hoka girl since 2012 because of the cushioning and soft sole. The new models with the hard outer shell are just plain painful. Didnt work for meI wore Clifton’s for years and recently converted to Mach 5s. I thought I’d try out the new Clifton 9s to return to a slightly more cushioned daily trainer. Clifton 9Have worn Hokas for many years for walking 4-5 days/wk at the suggestion of my runner son. Loved the 7’s as they never felt like I even had shoes on my feet. Unfortunately the Clifton 9’s are nowhere near as comfortable. The footbed on the ball of my foot feels like I’m walking directly on the pavement. Not sure what they changed but I would love to have the 7’s back. Tried different lacing options but nothing seems to work. Probably going to return.

Hoka Clifton 9I have run in all versions of this shoe. The first version was a fantastic shoe that everyone seemed to love. Version 2-8 were just not as good from a cushion and fit perspective and never got back to the near perfection of the original. This model is the first hoka that put a smile on my face in a long time! Although a bit bulkier than previous models this shoe has some of the magic back in the cushioning department that put hoka on the map. This ride is plush without being too soft and the shoe transition nicely with each slide. The toe box is perfect and not constricting. They are also light and do not feel bulky. I wear a 11.5 in almost everything and the 11.5 fit perfectly. I’m liking this shoe so much I may stock up in fear of the next update. HOKA - PLEASE DONT CHANGE THIS SHOE.

Trying to come back to Clifton 9, it's a NO!Just a little history for my opinion. I jumped on the Clifton train on the versions 1 and 2. They lost me after that, but I did go for the Redux version did a couple years back. After living in Europe and running cobbles my in my version 2 Cliftons I needed a new pair of shoes. I bought the Nike Invincible 1. First time running in Nikes in 20 years. LOVE them! So the Invincible 3 came out and had a decent amount of negative reviews compared to the early version I loved. So I decided to buy the Clifton 9. One short run and I knew I was done with Cliftons for good this time. I walked around them and they felt great.....a great walking shoe! Soon as I started my run I knew compared to my Nike Invincible 1 that there was not enough cushion for my liking. Plus they were running much larger than before. I had to crank down the laces to secure my foot in this shoe and that is with a custom footbed that is pretty high profile and takes up a lot of space. I quickly ran down to the Nike store to try the Invicible 3 to see why the reviews were so bad for this latest version. Compared it to the Clifton 9 I realized that I should have stuck with the Nike as it might not be like the versions 1/2, but the version 3 is so much better than the Hoka Clifton 9. I am a heal striker and run between 4-7 miles 3x a week. In my 50s I want no injuries as I run, so I have sent back the Clifton ( thanks RW for your return policy!!!) as will exchange them for the Nike Invincible 3!!
