My favSince ive started wearing the mafate speed 4 . Ive actually steered away from my speedgoats i prefer the fit & feel of these more . One thing that needs to be brought to attention though is the mesh part on the toe box needs to be a little smaller so the big toe doesnt catch in that area at time . But still my fav shoe of choice running trails on all types of terrain

Good ShoeIt pains me that this shoe is currently rating at 3.4 out of 5. In my opinion this is the best maximal cushioned shoe on the market at the moment (1/28/24). I'm a fan of the Speedgoats for the most part, but the outsole is not very resilient, so the Mafate Speed 4 is my stop gap. The outsole is a lot stronger than SG, and so far the upper is comparable, but I haven't gotten the Mafate soaked yet. SG upper stretches out too much when wet. I imagine the Mafate does too, but likely less. (if Hoka is listening, which they probably aren't) The heel shape is bad. Do better.

Not as stable as the Speedgoat 5I went into a store to buy another pair of Speedgoat 5's, as I have loved them. The salesperson suggested I try the Mafate Speed. I put a Speedgoat on one foot, and a Mafate on the other foot. Then I hopped on the treadmill to give the shoes a try/comparison. The Mafate felt more comfy. So, I shelled out the additional 30 bucks or so over the already high-priced Speedgoat's and purchased the Mafates. On my first trail rail, on my familiar home trails, within the first 1/2 mile I nearly rolled my ankle. I thought it was just a fluke or coincidence. It happened again a few weeks later. Then on a 25k a month later, I rolled it so badly that I had to be carted off the course. I never had this issue with my SG's. Maybe it's just my foot/stride/age, but the SG's have never given my such problems. Maybe it's stack height on the Mafate's. So, I rate these 3 stars and the Speedgoat's 5!

Smooth rocker, secure comfy hold......Had these shoes on the back bench for a while, then started using them for trail work. I started to like them as I ran out to the work sites - 4-5 miles. I normally have wide toes, but the toe box holds my feet securely without a plastic/structure feel. Everything, from heel security, midfoot security/comfort, to toe box security/comfort is rad. Tongue isn't the minimal short tongues - not fully gusseted. The knobs might be a bit too gnarly for the trails I run on, but they make steeper climbs/downs, and fast off-camber running brainless. Nice easy rocker feel. The fore-foot flexes really nicely for climbing and getting onto metatarsals. The ProFly midsole isn't bad, it's a no drama midsole, very Mach 5ish - no crazy bouncy stuff here, but I wish there was a bit more cushioning. This shoe feels like a built up Mach 5 with knobs. I'm using it more and more for regular runs. Me - 155lbs, all dirt running, 30-50mpw, lots of climbing.

Solid ShoeI don't use them for running with my knee needing replacement. I used them for hiking around Sequoia National Park. Extremely comfortable. Great grip on rocks and uneven terrain. Light enough that if worn all day your feet and legs don't feel fatigue like I did when I wore my hiking boots. I went prepared for snow and by the time we got there in June it was gone. These became my everyday wear. I now use them at home and out running errands as well.

AlmostWhen I first put the Mafate 4's on my feet, I really liked how they felt. A couple of miles into my first run, they felt cushioned, stable, and grippy. As runs and miles went by, I noticed that the lockdown is poor. I'm not sure if it's the elf ear design or what, but no matter what lacing technique I used, I could not get a good lockdown. Not being able to solve for the hill slippage killed it for me, which is tough, because I loved everything else about the shoe.

Good bye Hoka!Tried this uncomfortable and typical narrow Hoka, and it needs more forefoot room. Not much to say that is positive about this overpriced shoe. I am not trying any more Hokas. Bought the Nike Zegama ZoomX Trail shoe from RW and love them, a much better all around trail shoe and better RW sale price too. I will buy more pairs.

Some good improvements , some not so goodOutsole, Vibrams combo very grippy on wet rocks and loose wet soils. Secure feeling in rainy, muddy conditions. On dry hard buffed surfaces and gravel and technical sections, its like a road shoe with hiking soles. Big kudo's for improving the lug design, it doesn't drive into my metatarsals and bruise like the Mafate 3. MIdsole- I really miss the Evo Mafate midsole, because these ProFlies are stiff and firm, all.the.time. No bounce, just a little squish. Steep downhills are painful, I have to work harder to land each step correctly, where with a Edge or SpeedGoat I can land anywhere and focus more on bigger chunks of the trail, instead of every little rock. The fit of the upper works for me, along with the geometry of the shoe it is a good running trail shoe that seems to be made for rainy / snowy conditions. I do like the ride, and I rotate it with a Peregrine, since the cushioning is similar.

UncomfortableI bought this shoe for a change of pace shoe to my speedgoat 5. I wish I did not purchase these. There is not enough volume and the upper strangles the top of my foot. I say this as someone who loved the snug fit of the mach 4. Also when im finished running in these my hips are exhausted. These are also a little heavier then the SG 5 and I notice it. The only thing i would say that is good about these is that maybe going downhill there is more of a lockdown feel. Definitely not worth the pricetag. I wish I took a flier on the Tecton instead.

Wish I could give it a 4.5I have really enjoyed this show so far. I usually lean towards super soft and plush (Stinson ATR) but wanted something different. Although this is "responsive" it is still Hoka soft. I went to the last eyelet for the laces to change the way the shoe impacts, as I feel the balance of the shoe is slightly off. Could be just me, and it was not that big of a negative. Only negative I have is the spot in the soul smack in the middle of the heel. I felt one rock just into it on my 20 mile run. Not enough to hurt, but I can see a potential as the shoe wears through more to have a rogue rock agitate that spot in the future. 4.5 stars, would highly recommend. I will buy another pair sometime this winter.
