Product Details:

The HOKA Tecton X 2 is poised to show the trail running world that there will be no sophomore slump with the next version of HOKA's fastest trail shoe. With the same ProflyX foam that made the original Tecton X a fan favorite from the start, the Tecton X 2's midsole boasts an Early Stage Meta-Rocker design that encourages a quick and efficient turnover, making long distances feel effortless. The lightweight and responsive foam is brought to life thanks to parallel carbon plates that add snappiness while still adapting to uneven terrain.

When it comes to tackling challenging terrain, the Vibram Megagrip with Litebase Construction in the outsole offers a confident and secure grip, making it a breeze to navigate even the most technical trails while maintaining a fast pace. Additionally, the Tecton X 2 features a new and improved Matryx upper. This woven material is lightweight, incredibly durable, and inherently hydrophobic—meaning that you can power through any stream crossings standing between you and a PR.

All in all, the HOKA Tecton X 2 is primed to become a top pick for trail running enthusiasts and is sure to be seen on the podium at major trail races around the world.

really for racesI got these on the recommendation of an elite trail runner friend, having previously worn Speedgoat 5s and Mafate 4s. These are much lighter than both, making them very fast. However, less arch support than Mafate, which I find more comfortable for longer trail runs with downhill components. I will use these primarily for short uphill races. ***Size up half a size from your normal Hoka size!

Running in high heelsI set out to run a 5 miler in my new carbon plated kicks. I ran 3 miles and all I wanted to do was take them off and finish my haul barefooted. My toes have never felt more smashed together. The toe box on these shoes is narrow. The heel cup of the shoe feels wider than the toe box. I typically run in Altra Superiors so they are much more roomy in the toe, but even if I normally ran in a tight toe shoe I don’t think these would work for me.

DisappointedI like the first version of the Tekton X. A little pricey and the tongue was barely big enough to cover the laces but otherwise a great shoe. The new version manages to amplify both of those faults. It feels like the original Tekton (good) but it’s terribly expensive and the one design fault of the old shoe, the tongue, is even worse if that’s possible. The laces rub on the foot tendons when you use the lock down lacing holes. What an odd design flaw on a top shelf trail running shoe. It’s like Hoka forgets the simplest things every time they redesign a shoe. Sometimes I think Hoka is more concerned with aesthetics, money and marketing rather than making a solid functioning shoe.

At first seemingly good but then not so muchMy first date with this second iteration went swimmingly. The second and third dates unfortunately things started to fall apart. The more technical terrain I placed this shoe in the more I realized that it wouldn't be able to handle the Colorado trails that I train and challenge myself on. Starting on top: The collar and heel were very comfortable but the tongue is WAY too short. How can a 225 dollar shoe miss this detail? If I'm going to be in tech terrain, I most def will be lacing it all the way up and when I do lace bite is real. Overall lockdown tho is much better in this shoe than the speed goat 5. The tongue overall is better due to the padding, but both shoe styles suffer, or I should say the runner does that they are way too short. Midsole at first was very nice but I noticed mid way thru the second run that things started to become more harsh, not like the first run I did in them. Not sure if the Dual Density was already packing down, but it didn't feel very plush anymore. I do like this version of carbon execution much better than Endorphin Edge or TNF, but the midsole just started to feel dead to me for some reason. Outsole was decent and felt fairly confident in using it on varied terrain, but I think they could have been a bit more aggressive. (Maybe not Mafate level...but a bit more would have been nice) Now, lastly...this may just be me, but the colorways could be improved. At this price, "romper-room colors" just don't jive with what this shoe is used by and for. (Look at what Salomon and Nike are doing please Hoka)

Phenomenal Technical Trail ShoeI’m on my second pair of X-2s and absolutely love them. I had 4 pairs of Xs prior. Most of the terrain I run is steep and technical in Orange County, the San Gabriels, and Eastern Sierras. These shoes handle all of that with aplomb. One of the best features of this shoe is the midsole. The mechanics allow for a perfect midfoot strike with my stride. This makes for a very low-impact landing, even though they technical may not have as much cushioning as the Speedgoat 5. The carbon plates add a small degree of torsional stability, but act more as a rock plate IME. The new Matrix upper ensures the shoe stays very attached to my foot and doesn’t wiggle around, all without any unnecessary pressure points. The outsole has superior traction and grips better than the SG5. I also find this shoe to be well suited to long runs, even 20+ mi. While I would like the tongue to be a few mm longer, the gussets keep it in place and it stays exactly where I put it when I tie my laces. The heel counter perfectly cradles my ankle with no slippage. I also find this shoes does a better job keeping out debris compared to the SG5. I use thin, lightweight socks (Wigwam Attain ultralight) and don’t experience any hot spots or blisters. The only downside is the short lifespan. It’s around 250mi if you run on rugged terrain. I’ve found that after 200mi, the midsole starts to breakdown and by 250mi, it’s time for a new pair. For me, that’s no biggie considering the enjoyment I have on my runs.

Awsome! This shoe is fun, comfortable, light and responsive. I used it for a 20 mile trail race in rocks, mud, grass and some paved areas, it performed flawless. Placed in top 5!

Hoka Tecton X-2Great shoe. I picked up a pair to race in, and used my Speedgoats for training. Much lighter then the Goats; wide toe box, very responsive and good grip on the trails. The carbon plates definitely add a little pop. Did a 24 hr Ultra a few days after break in; never had to change shoes. I find I use these quite a bit on my road runs now also, that’s how comfortable they are. Dry quickly and drain well with the mesh upper. Overall very happy with this shoe.

Excellent shoeGreat shoe, with some minor imperfections. The ride is sublime, the traction superb, light weight, good fit (especially in the toe box, which has plenty of room but not so much as to be sloshy). The only downsides for me are that it could use a better heel counter--there's mobility back there that's minor, but it can't be fully locked down on my feet. And I'd really love some actual padding on the tongue. I guess they made the tongue thin to save weight, but the problem is that it's really hard to get the lace tension right--either it's too loose, or there's lace bite, and with a skitch of padding in the tongue, that problem could be solved. It wouldn't be my first choice on a relentlessly technical mountain run, but for everything else, one of the better shoes I've used. And by the way, it totally smokes the Speedland GS:TAM in every way.

Awesome upgradeLove the new Tecton x2... The evo speed goat was king of the Hoka trail line up. For me this is a better all around shoe. I have raced and trained in all the speed goats and Mafate versions. This is the new trail king Imo. It feels like a Mock 5 with carbon plate technology and awesome mega light base grip lugs. Maybe the lugs could be a tad bigger.. But then again for 95% of the trail situations... it is a perfect balanced racer in my book, From 50k to 100 miles. Awesome work Hoka.

Matrix !All the pros of v1 with a better upper. Lockdown was much improved, the upper does feel more narrow out of the box but within 20 miles it opens up a lot. No rubbing of the big toe on the bumper which was a slight issue for me in v1 at 50k plus distances.

Firm, narrow, stiffI was hoping this shoe might be like an upcoming Mach X - sort of an ultra Mach 5-6.... no. My bodyweight is 155lbs, slightly wider feet, neutral lander. for me, this shoe felt fairly narrow at my size 11, but length was proper. The midsole did not have much give - a Mach 5 is "plush" compared to this shoe. Also, the plate sort of flexes, but not much - probably not a great shoe for vertical gain enthusiasts. I do like the Matrix material when it fits - Speed Goat EVO - and I do like the smaller knobs on the outsole. Didn't take the shoes for a spin, simply too firm.
