Product Details:

Bringing the fast and furious ride of a super shoe to your nearest trail is the New Balance SuperComp Trail, a trail racing shoe with the features to take your performance to the next level on race day. Taking inspiration from the brand's marathon racing shoe, the SuperComp Elite, the SC Trail is packed with a high stack of New Balance's ultra-responsive and soft FuelCell foam that keeps your stride efficient and your legs feeling fresh from start to finish.

The stiff carbon fiber plate embedded in the midsole creates a highly propulsive underfoot experience, making running longer and faster feel easier, especially on the uphills. But don't worry, the carbon plate also offers the flexibility needed to take on uneven terrain, thanks to the split forefoot design that adapts to the terrain.

And when the trails get challenging, you can count on the Vibram Litebase rubber lugs in the outsole to keep you grounded and moving onward and upward. There is additional texture to the lugs that has been strategically placed and engineered to increase braking power in the heel and increase propulsion in the forefoot.

Rounding out the SC Trail is the synthetic mesh upper that is lightweight, highly durable, and offers excellent breathability. These components work to deliver a snug yet comfortable fit that keeps your feet protected and feeling strong for the duration of the training session or race.

Overall, the New Balance SuperComp Trail takes the core philosophies of its road racing counterpart and applies them to the trails to deliver top performance in faster workouts and ultra-marathon races.

What exactly is FuelCell these days? The first pair of shoes I purchased from the FuelCell line were the FuelCell Rebel v.2's. Loved the FuelCell material. The material in the rebel v. 2's set my hopes and expectations for anything that came since with the fuel cell stamp on it. Since, then, I purchased 2 pair of the fuel cell elite v3's the fuel cell propel v4 and the fuel cell trainor v. 1. Lastly, I purchased a pair of the FuelCell Supercomp Trail for faith in the fuel cell material. What really bothers me is that although all of the above shoes indicate fuel cell, The bounce, feel, texture and energy return in each shoe have a different feel. Whatever material is in the Propel and the trail shoes is substantially different. The elite v.3's is similar but not the same and the trainors is different but I like the bounce so it gets a bi. I wish NB was more like the Puma Nitro line in that the material is identical regardless of the shoe purpose or design. If it says Nitro, you know what to expect. Fuel Cell on the other hand has to many interpretations. Think Im done with the Fuel Cell line for now.

Almost Super!I wanted to love these trail running shoes! Just too narrow and tight. The reviews were correct. Too small in size (size up!) and too narrow in general. They have a nice bounce to them, but they could use more foam for the forefoot to make the shoe more balanced and cushioned, thus the Super Trail Running Shoe worth $200. If I wanted more ground feel, I would buy a $100 trail running shoe. Everything else was great. Sending back, however.

Close, but a missHaving loved the 1080 road shoe and Hierro v7 trail shoe for distances up to 100 milers, I had high hopes for these shoes. The outsole is great with good grip. The midsole however is a bit too squishy. It felt unstable on even mild trail. The plate seemed fine. I think a firmer/ stiffer foam would have made this a winner. But, the upper material seemed draped like a tent. It was made out of fantastic material that I'm sure would never rip, snag, or wear out. It also seemed very water resistant. But, it allowed so much gapping between my foot and it that I just slid around. If they used the upper they had on the Hierro v7 or something snug to a foot shape like on their road shoes, it would have been much better. Close but no.

Trail ReviewOverall this shoe is pretty solid. I think the drop is a bit much and it could be a bit less and could have more cushioning in the forefoot. My feet took a pounding on a technical downhill, even with the carbon plate, otherwise it performs well. I sized the same as my NB trainer and have not developed and friction spots or blisters. Not sure if this would be my choice for longer races more than 50k though. I would want less overall drop and more forefoot cushion for that scenario unless the terrain was pretty flat.

Race shoe best for light to medium trailI wore these for the Pilot Mountain to Hanging Rock 50km and JFK 50 mile. I would wear again for the JFK50, but will probably go with a firmer shoe for Pilot Mountain. Positive is it is the carbon plate makes it fast additionally, it is light. It has a ton of cushion which is nice to long distance; however, it is a little too much give for rough terrain. Medium but grippy lugs, good for damp to dry. I would not recommend them for a muddy trail. Also, shoe is a little small. I recommend going up half a size. The toe box doesn’t have much protection, but this also gives a little room for swelling.

Excellent Shoe for Trail RunningExcellent footwear, good grip on technical terrain and on steep slopes. Great momentum and speed with its carbon plate, in short a good companion for many kilometers of trail running on fast terrain.

Heel Toe offset too high. The forefoot is too low for a trail shoe. With an offset of 10 mm the foot angle is quite steep. 6mm would be more appropriate by adding some more midsole at the front. This is only the first version. I look forward to the update after the bugs have been ironed out. It does not warrant the high price with this version.

bad glueused for 5 weeks and one spartan beast and the VIBRAM threads are pealing off the foam , light , good wet rock grip , poor ankle support

Not bad. Needs workTraction was great but the toe box needs more room. Insole is minimal and needs replaced in my opinion. I changed mine out and will try them again. 6 mile run and my big toes were feeling it, and my feet needed more cushion.

Good shoe for the first versionThe ride on this shoe is really, really good, as is the traction. I have had no problems with the channel collecting anything. I went half a size up, and the toe box is quite nice (I have a wide forefoot). However, I find the upper too sloppy--I don't think it's just because I went up half a size. The tongue is too thin to avoid lace bite, and after a couple of hours, the ankle collar gets abrasive because of lack of hold. I took it on a technical ultra and my feet were pretty beat up after. I think the upper needs a more padded tongue, more overlays, and a more secure heel. If they did that on v.2, it would be awesome.

Great shoeFantastic shoe, snappy, comfy, plush all in one. The biggest downside is the narrow toe box. I had to return my pair for a half size up, and even then it still is too narrow unfortunately. I'll keep it, but for only half marathon distance and below.

Great but needs workThis is a fast shoe with a fantastic mid sole and out sole. It runs at least a half size small. The exposed hole on the outsole needs to be filled in with shoe goo or you will pick up rocks. The toebox is narrow. The insole is trash and needs to be replaced with anything you can find.

Stable and responsiveI really like the Fuel Cell line. This model has an energy return without sacrificing responsiveness, and except for a narrower toe box than I’ve come to expect from New Balance, this would be my first choice for the trail. I hope it becomes available in 2E wide sizes.

My New Favorite Trail RunnerI'm mainly a road runner but also love to run the trails and have a nice collection of excellent trail running shoes from various well-known brands. I'm a fan of NB FuelCell road shoes like the SC Trainer and Rebel v3, so I was excited by the announcement of the SC Trail at the Running Event in late-2022. The thought of a carbon-plated trail shoes with FuelCell made me giddy with high expectations. I was surprised that the SC Trail was released with very little fanfare or marketing blitz. I saw one very positive review of it upon release (only review available at the time) and got a pair (half-size up) right away. I have to say, the SC Trail is one of those very rare running shoes that exceeded my high expectations. It is very light (8.5oz for my US men's size 8.5), nimble, propulsive, bouncy yet controlled, super comfortable in the upper and midsole, and surprisingly grippy and stable - even on technical trails. It really does everything exceptionally well, but I would say that it's best on smoothened hard-packed dirt and gravel trails. It's very nimble with great traction from the Vibram Litebase outsole so it also handles technical trails very well too, but picking up the pace on dirt/gravel trails seems what this shoe is designed and built for. It feels like road super trainer tailored for the trails and, to me, the ride also feels like something right in between the SC Trainer and Rebel v3. The landings are soft and cushy as expected with the FuelCell midsole foam, but the toe-offs are firm and propulsive, making the ride efficient as well as outright fun. Also, this shoe feels great on the road as well, making it ideal for road-to-trail excursions. I live in a hilly neighborhood with roads and trails crisscrossing each other in all directions and now with the SC Trail, I can run both in one session without any compromise, which is amazing. Until now, it was one or the other and if I wanted to run both, I'd take the car to one of the trails and then I'd switch to a pair of road shoes to run on the road afterwards. For me, the SC Trail is definitely the 'Shoe of the Year' and the most versatile running shoe I've ever tried in that it can handle both the trails and the road so well. I think the only niggle could be that the upper is very flexible, stretchy, and not structured like most trail shoes, so your feet may shift side-to-side a bit during steep descents on rocky technical trails, making it feel a bit unstable. I'm a slim and light guy (5-7, 125) who's fairly agile, so this hasn't been an issue for me but I can imagine this being an issue for bigger and heavier runners. Overall, I'm extremely happy with the SC Trail and it's become my favorite trail shoe and one of my few favorite running shoes, period. I love it so much that I literally haven't been able to stop running in it and added another pair at my TTS (size 8). In a little over 3 weeks, I'm already up to 160 miles with these shoes. The TTS second pair was a little tight in the forefoot and toe-box area, but I stretched out the upper a bit by stuffing the shoes with socks and leaving it overnight and now it feels perfect. I wear thicker socks for the half-size-up pair. I'm sure I'll be adding a few more pairs when other colorways become available. One more thing: this is the easiest running shoes to clean that I've ever had. After each run, I use a few wet paper towels to clean off the dirt on the upper and water down the midsole and outsole for a few minutes and they look brand new again! Highly recommended for trail runners and for those who like to go on road-to-trail excursions. Nearly half of the miles I've logged have been on pavement/tarmac and the SC Trail compares favorably to the recent road "super trainers". It's that good on the road but, of course, it's even better on the trails because it really is, first and foremost, a superb carbon-plated trail shoe.

Not a Good FitThey said the shoe run a little short, that it's best to size up a half size. I have always been a 12.5 in NB shoes so I ordered in that size and, just to be sure, I also purchased the size 13. The 12.5 did indeed size up a little short, and the toe box is low, so I could feel my toes rubbing the material as well. The size 13 is enormous; definitely felt much larger than just a half size bigger than the 12.5. Length of shoe aside, I found the upper to not have much structure and did not hold my foot secure at all. It's unfortunate as all the independent reviewers say that the midsole is fantastic. I guess if your foot is the right shape that may be true, but for me, they did not work. For reference, I am a 12.5 in all the major brands and my foot shape is kind of duck like: narrow heel and flaring out towards the toe area. I am a true medium width.

Best Carbon Trail ShoeOf the carbon trail shoes I have tried (NF, Saucony, Adidas) this has been by far the best. Very stable but will bouncy and responsive. The mega grip outsole is awesome. Wore them out of the box for Tushars 70k in Utah and was very happy with that choice.
