I love these shoesLots of support and traction, love the look and colors. I was really happy using running warehouse for the first time.
Everything I want in a trail shoeThe fit is just perfect for my slightly wider than average feet. The traction is solid, and I love that midsole pop. The platform could be widened out to improve stability a bit, but that’s the only thing that could improve the ride for me. For this price, I just love everything this shoe offers.
Sloppy upperAfter wearing every WH to run hilly ultras from 50k to 100mi, I wanted to like this version. Yes, it gained weight, but the outsole tread explained that. Yes, the React midsole feels nice on buffed out trail, but that is where my compliments end. The main problem is an upper that is a bit too voluminous (my feet are average) and lacking any midfoot overlays or structure. If the shoe had the old flywire technology or a sturdier upper material to lock down your foot, the shoe would work, but trying to stay on platform negotiating heavily off cambered terrain is nearly impossible. The upper is just to flimsy.
best version yet?for context, i've ran in every single wildhorse in existence from 1 thru 8, and this version is clearly the best. 1/3/8 are my all-time favorites for different reasons, but no version has given me as much confidence to bomb technical downhills as the 8.
the wildly improved outsole (grippy 5mm lugs) combined with the sweet sweet react midsole are a magic combo. add an incredibly comfortable upper and you have a shoe you can wear in a 50K/50 mile/100 mile race with no issues.
Excellent updateVery nice update. The last 2 iterations of this model were poorly designed in my opinion. Ride is nice, cushioning is ideal, traction is really good in a wide array of terrains. Runs lighter than listed weight. Only area I would recommend Nike improving is trying to reduce weight. I’m of the opinion this will satisfy a wide range of trail runners.
Good so farI went from a 10 1/2 in the Zegama down to a 10 in this model. Fits much better now, just enough room in the toebox. One thing that I have to say right off the bat is, I am not a huge fan of the lace holes. It doesn’t allow for a more lockdown fit. With that being said, swapping out the laces and using my torrent 2 laces helped a lot. They are less slippery, or stretchy. The shoe climbs really well, and I appreciate the foam being springy but not too much like most super shoe models right now.
Disappointing departureI've been running in the Wildhorse since v2 and have really enjoyed just about every iteration until this one. My favorites were v2-v5 with 5 being best IMO. It was always one of the most versatile trail shoes on the market with the only real downside being poor grip on wet surfaces. Sadly this shoe no longer resembles those older models at all. With he react foam they got heavier, yet still v7 I enjoyed (skipped v6) for long runs and it was an ultra worthy shoe that while a little unstable due to the react foam still have decent lockdown and worked for most terrain.
But this version while it looks great and feels comfortable upon stepping into it has taken a disappointing turn. It feels even heavier than before, bigger, sloppier fitting, while the react feels nice, it is plodding and bulky feeling over even moderate terrain. it is best suited to completely flat buffed out trail. Which is really unfortunate because this is the best outsole the Wildhorse has ever had which is one of the few positives here. On off camber sections I was worried I was going to break an ankle or fall. This shoe would be downright dangerous in the mountains.
I guess if you have a big foot, need tons of width and volume and need a ton of cushion this might be your shoe. I'd say its like a bigger version of the Brooks Cascadia which is already sort of a tank. No idea what Nike was thinking with this. Here's to hoping Nike someday brings back the feel of the past great Wildhorse versions.
