Product Details:

The Topo Athletic Ultraventure 3 adheres to Topo's ethos of promoting a more natural running experience while still delivering a smooth and cushioned ride for runners and hikers looking to take on mild to moderate terrain such as groomed trails, fire roads, and packed single tracks. This model comes with an increased stack height of Topo's updated ZipFoam™ that provides additional protection upon landing along with a new Vibram outsole that provides weight relief and increased flexibility. Logging in heavy mileage will be an ease thanks to the increased toe sweep that helps roll the runner forward, allowing for a fast and efficient turnover of the legs. Overall, the Ultraventure 3 is a fantastic option for adventurers in search of a dependable trail shoe that will keep them comfortable on anything from daily hikes to long-distanced runs.

My FavesThe Topo Ultraventure has been my go to shoe for years. I love the roomy toe box. The cushioning is just right, not too much foam, but enough to absorb the rocky, rooted terrain we run on. These shoes always have a reliable upper and sole, as I have not have either of those deteriorate more than normal use. They also are awesome in all weathers. The tread gets me through the mud with confidence! I love my Topo's!!

4 or 5 star - depending on lug height desiresThis is a fantastic trail shoe! Something that I need to keep in mind is the toe box width for road or trail running especially for longer distances. My feet swell fairly substantially on any run over 12 miles and If I am using a shoe that has a toe box that fits just right before a run, I can be damn sure the same shoe that feels just right when trying them on will be killing me after 10 or 12 miles. This shoe is perfect. It has a larger toe box but nothing to lose under 12 miles and after 12 miles or so , im very glad I have a shoe with a wider toe box. The midsole material is excellent. It gives a bouncy and very comfortable ride and definately the most comfortable trail shoes in my line up. The reason I say I would rate this a 4 or a 5 is because of the lug length. I would love to see this shoe with a 4 to 5 mm lug. Because it does not, I gave it a 4/4.5 instead. However, if I am just using it to run through buff trails and shorter grass, it definately gets a 5. If you are looking for a best in its class road to trail shoe, this is it! For more ferrel conditions, the lug length will not cut it. Even that being said, the shoe hits high on so many marks that it may still be the pair I grab even for more ferrel conditions. I REALLY wish this shoe had a gortex version. I can never understand why all popular trail shoes do not have a gortext model. Nothing makes my runs more miserable that having wet feet in soaked shoes and socks. I have learned though that often enough, a gortex version does exist. Its just that the web site or store I am looking at doesnt carry that model. So besides remembering that I should get a wider toe box for shoes I intend on running long distance in, I also try to remember to check the internet or manufacturer if I want to confirm the existence or non-existence of a gortex/waterproof model.

Great first trail shoe!I usually run my trails in the same sneakers I run roads in; I thought this meant I should interpret the same features into a shoe with just a more grippy sole. However, this shoe really encapsulates the changes I need transitioning from road to trail. My only complaint is going from a 13mm drop shoe to a 5mm drop, which is taking some getting used to. The cushioning and sole of this shoe is great, especially because I was not ready to commit to the max kind of cushions that something like Hoka might present.

Good Shoe, Runs BigThe shoe runs about 1/4 size too big. I ordered my usual 9.5 in Topo and it does not fit. It felt good on though. This shoe is built on the same last as the Specter road shoe, so if you have that shoe, this shoe will probably fit you and feel great. ( I do have the Specter - it is springy and cushiony, but I should never have kept it because of the sizing.)

This version has a strange tread/bottomThe show has a strange "roll" to the front forefoot that forces your foot to go up on your toes with every stride. The last version was normal but they got a little to weird with this one. I've run in some Asics that had this forward roll to them and they killed my Achilles so these are going back to avoid issues.

just rightI got the 12 to start, too long, exchanged for the 11.5 and it fit just right. I love the mid-foot support and the heel grab is very good, all in all a great shoe. the only thing I would change is the lace length. They were just way too long. I am going to try the road version!!

Wide high cushion shoe for long sessionsI run 40-60 miles per week and my main races are trail ultras in the 50K-100 mile range, generally finishing in the middle. I have approximately 100 miles in the Ultraventure 3, including several 18-20 mile trail runs on technical terrain. The upper is comfortable and breathable and has adequate foot security for technical terrain. For me, the midsole is of medium to slightly soft firmness, allowing me land on many sharp objects at any point without discomfort, but is not so soft that I feel like I'm overly struggling to pick up the pace. The outsole is surprisingly good on dry rocky and sometimes loose desert southwest trails. I had no issues taking the Ultraventure 3s on the same trails I would take the Speedgoat on for example. For a high/max shoe, the Ultraventure 3 has good flexibility maybe in part due to incomplete outsole coverage. As a con though, landing on sharp objects where there is exposed foam feels comparable to how it'd feel for a medium stack height shoe. Overall, I like the Ultraventure 3 and would recommend it.
