Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stable

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Initial Comfort- But Didn't Work for MeMy initial run in these was great—felt comfortable and the cushioning was good but that's about as long as it lasted. I got these to run Speedgoat as i wanted a shoe with more stability and some protection. -Sizing: true to size (I'm a 10.5, and these were ~2-2.5mm long on the insoles compared to others). Forefoot width is very accommodating. -Outsole: ASICS grip traction was great, no issues. No ripping off of lugs on technical terrain. Good durability. -Foam: OK, felt kind of flat and dead to me. The arch support is pretty minimal. Did not feel any energy return from the foam. -Toe bumpers: Good protection, no issues. -Heel cup: Too wide, compare this to other shoes and the heel cup is very broad. It is also too stiff (noticeable climbing up very steep terrain). -Upper/lacing: Here is the biggest issue I had; I developed hot spots on the ball of my foot as well as blisters on big toe and pinky toe which I attribute to too much movement/ inability to lock down (particularly the forefoot). Blisters are not a problem I have ever had. The lacing system and more traditional road-style mesh upper contribute to this IMO (I had to stop and re-tighten laces after 1-2miles on every run as they just don't snug up enough). This is more of an issue in technical/steep terrain and may not bother you in flat to rolling terrain. Unfortunately, can't recommend these for steeper/more technical terrain. If I was on more gravel/moderate terrain don't know if I can recommend them there either, as then I would prefer a more superfoam type trail shoe with more energy return. They are also too clunky for a road-to-trail shoe.... So, in a nutshell, maybe a one trail shoe to do it all if that's your style, but for a quiver not sure where they fit.

Actually ran trails in them...I took these out of the box and ran 6 miles on some technical, single track trails with widely varying terrain: rock, gravel, dirt, mud, roots, etc. Happy to say they exceeded expectations. They're light and nimble with ample cushioning that, admittedly, isn't as plush as a Nimbus. But they pack more than enough cushioning for the Church of the Sunday Long Run, especially if you bear in mind that they're $140, not $165. The best part about this update is the width of the midsole/outsole. Lots of ground contact makes for tremendous stability. This shoe feels securely planted with each foot fall. The upper is the quality I've come to expect from asics. Heel counter is a little shallow, but didn't bother me. I look forward to many more miles. This shoe punches above it's price tag.

looks good, comfortable step inI tried the Trabuco 12 and thought it was pretty dull, firm and safe, but dull I gave this shoe a right foot try on for 30 seconds and it feels the same. Midsole feels firm, forefoot does not flex, shoe felt flat on the floor, slappy. Frankly, the Asics trail specific shoes (not including Fuji Lite) are not really dialed. The TR version of many of the road shoes run waaaaaaay better. I currently use the Superblast 2 for my local trails, but enjoy checking out the new tech/shoes.
