Stack Height

  • Stack height refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of material below the forefoot, as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.

Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that falls near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are versatile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral Running Shoes

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stability Running Shoes

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

Weight is measured per single shoe, including laces. Men's and unisex styles are based on a men's size 9, and women's styles are based on a women's size 8.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

Perfect shoe for a Morton’s NeuromaI have an oversized Morton’s Neuroma. This particular brand of shoe is the only shoe I can wear all day without foot pain. Great design!

Love the shoeI personally like the low drop and low padding. If the padding it real thick I can't feel the road very well and a high chance of rolling my ankle, thus the reason for liking the lower stacked padding. I do not run trails or if I do, they are not rocky so stepping on rocks is not a problem for me

Fantastic shoe, needs quality updateI'm on my second pair of Escalante v4. I almost didn't buy it again, but it's hard to find the perfect shoe... This shoe needs an update to the upper, for sure. The heel collar wears out too fast, and the mesh around the toes needs the reinforced portion to travel further up the shoe. It doesn't provide enough coverage and you will poke your toes through the mesh before the end of the life of the shoe... The tongue is irritating as hell, moving side to side all the time. It's also very thin, you can feel lace bite. The tongue needs to be another mm or two thicker, and like 1-2cm wider. If these small changes were made, the shoe would last more than 6 months of daily wear without issue. As is, it's only going to last most people 6 months of daily wearing while standing and walking, not even considering running... As a running shoe, this problem doesn't even surpass 100 miles without issue.

Almost perfectI've been wearing Keens all spring and summer and I couldn't find anything my toes were happy in. I found these and almost love them. I have size 9 1/2, skinny feet. The length is true to size. The midfoot is narrow, probably wont work for wider feet. The cons, they aren't easy to put on, the tongue slides down inside the shoe and the laces don't stay tied unless you double tie them. The laces are short so the double tie is a problem. For my feet they're great, but wider feet would probably be dissatisfied.

WonderfulGreat shoes, so comfortable, very happy I tried them. Was an avid Saucony Kinvara runner since version 2, but they ruined them after 13. Took a chance with Altra and will never go back! Hooked!

Tried and True!I'm currently on my third pair of Altra Escalante 4's and I've used them from the gym, road, and trails. These are my go to for training and I would recommend anyone to give them a try. Each pair has gone well passed 100 miles before I order a back-up pair ready to continue training. I would recommend giving them a try.

Great service, good new iterationMany reviews say this is a callback to the Altra 2.5. I’d say those are probably the closest comparison. They feel more rigid than the 2.5s, but not inflexible. Definitely less rigid than the 3, most notably in the upper (I actually liked the upper in the 3 more). They are very light and seemed responsive the first couple weeks of running. I have extra wide feet, so I have to size up half a size and I removed the insoles. I did have to send my first pair back to Running Warehouse because the seam where the tongue meets the toe box on one of my shoes was coming apart after only about 40 miles of running. Running Warehouse promptly sent me a new pair free of charge. Overall, I think I’ll enjoy the shoe. They look nice, are very light, and feel close to previous iterations of the shoe, which makes them feel familiar. I do wish the mid foot was slightly wider for my wide feet, I’d like the upper to be a bit firmer like the previous model, and I’m a little worried about durability. I’m hoping they will last me at least 500 miles like all their predecessors. I think it’ll be a decent shoe, but time will tell whether or not they’ll hold up.

Good for short to medium runsAbout 35 miles of mostly 3 mile easy runs, some strides, and a 10k PB! Lightweight and comfy. Only complaint is the tongue is thin and floppy and wants to scrunch down over my toes. Not sure I would do much more than 10k at a time in these but I like them for the 5-10k range.
