Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.

Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral Running Shoes

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stability Running Shoes

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Smooth, Responsive RideI’m over 400 miles into my Experience Flows with no issues. I’ve used them for long runs over 20 miles, shorter runs and tempo work, and they’ve been great. Responsive, good feel, smooth, comfortable. They’ve been great workhorse shoes.

So far so goodBeen trying to transition to 0 drop shoes. So far these have been great, it does take me about a mile to get my achilles and warmed up.

Experience FlowI was one of those who didn't really like the idea of non-zero drop Altras. But after running Tunnel Hill 100 I developed a lot of nagging tendonitis, which I eventually found responded well to rotate my zero drop Altras with Hokas in the 4-5 mm drop range. While I love the Hoka Speedgoat, I never really found a road/treadmill Hoka that I cared for. Part of my problem is very wide feet, so I can only tolerate those that are available in wides. I finally gave the Flow a try, and it is a great shoe. I find it comparable to the Clifton, but for me a much better fit, even compared to the Clifton wides, and is a noticeably softer shoe. I will likely buy a second pair soon, and I am going to try the Wild version to see if it rivals the Speedgoat. Excellent shoe.

ClunkySoft, comfortable shoe all in all. But it’s not as flexible as I’d like. I have a narrow heal and I just can’t get the shoe to stop coming off my heal when I run.

Love them! PerfectThe Rivera was my favorite trainer and these are replacing them. The fit is perfect and I love the light, soft ride. The 4mm drop is also nice even though I have been an Altra loyalist. If you wear Altra it becomes impossible to switch because you realize the foot shape toe box is mandatory for long term running health. I would wear the Torin, but these shoes are more comfortable and enjoyable for me to run in.

ALTRA’s best yetAltra Experience Flow Men's Shoes: (male/205 lbs/ neutral ) I’ve been running in Altra shoes on & off for close to two decades. By far this is Altra’s best road running shoe yet. The fit , material, outsole , insole, lacing, weight, offset, ventilation of the Altra FLOW is AWARD WINNING (Notice “midsole” was not mentioned) and is superior to many of the popular shoes competing in the running shoe market. Has Altra entered the class of a Saucony Endorphin or New Balance ??? Not yet, but very very close. IMO, if ALTRA adds “PEBAX” to the midsole of the current Altra Flow, they will have Saucony & New Balance on their heels (no pun intended).

The perfect daily trainerI was looking for a daily trainer that will let my toenails live, that’s cushioned for the roads but light enough to pick up the pace. This shoe has it all! I’m a fan of the low, more natural heel-toe offset and although the heel counter is shallow the laces are well made to keep your heel in the shoe.

Big guy looking for a wider toe boxThis show delivers on the width of the tow box. However, I found the shoe to be a little smaller in length then all my other size 14s that I wear. The Altra feels very nice well running, but a little sluggish compared to other shoes that I routinely run in (Kinvara loyalist for many years) with the rocker technology. This could be a symptom of not being used to the rocker technology, the stack height or anything. But they are very comfortable to run in and I look forward to many more miles on them.

Great Experience the the Altra ExperienceIn 2024 I discovered Altras after hiking the entire Appalachian Trail in Altra Lone Peaks. After the trail I decided to try the Altra Experience Flows to get back into running. These shoes were perfect! I love that this shoe provides space for my toes to naturally move and the 4mm drop also feels natural.

My first pair of Altra running shoesI was hesitant about purchasing these shoes because for the past 8 years I have been strictly wearing another brand but I've wanted to switch for the last 3 years and I am SO HAPPY I DID! I love these shoes, highly recommend.

Happy FeetI love Altra running shoes, they are my fave! I have been using them for over 5 years now. Most of the time I've bought Torins but thought I would try something different. I fell in love with these. Only thing is I think I should have ordered a 9.5 instead of a 9. I usually buy 9s but these seem to be just a tab bit smaller in size, bare minimum but my toes feel it.

Love theseMy second pair. I love these shoes! The fit is not as wide as traditional Altra so I did have to size up.

Better than ExpectedI have approximately 25 plus miles in them. Today's run I felt the shoe lighter and more springy push off. They remind of the Torrent 3 which was a great shoe. I actually hit PR after torn meniscus surgery. A pleasant surprise and I will buy again.

Amazingly comfortableI love these shoes! Immediately after putting them on, I thought they were the comfortable shoes I’d ever worn. At first, I didn’t like the bumps for preventing heel slippage, but once I wore them running once, I didn’t notice them at all. I will definitely buy this style again! This review is a sweepstakes entry to get a running warehouse gift card and isn’t affiliated with Altra, so I promise I have no ulterior motive in giving these shoes 5 stars!

Not good for AltraToe spring is too aggressive, forces you back on the heel. It feels like a negative drop shoe, and the midsole is firm. I wish I had not bought these, they are also narrow in the midfoot and it kills my feet.

Great do it all shoeThis is a great do it all shoe. It feels very neutral and well cushioned under the forefoot. It's a very natural running experience with a little help from the 4 mil drop and moderate rocker. The toe box is perfect for those who like a wide fit. Much better than some other recent Altras. The midsole is between soft and firm, it's well balanced in my opinion. The shoe is great for easy paces as it transitions well, but it's light enough to do strides if you want. I want to get the trail version now.
