Cushioning Level

Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stable

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

First time userI have wide feet and have been a Brooks user for years due to thier toebox room. I was recommended the Altra because of feel and toebox, so I bought a pair and just ran a easy 7 miles on every surface possible and they way out performed my experienced. Wow I will continue to run in these wild experience Altras and look to try some other models

Good at FirstI really liked this shoe at the start with the perfect amount of cushioning, width, and a 4mm drop. After running in them over the following couple weeks, they grew flat very quickly. I am not a big person and seem to only have this problem with Altras - which is why I haven't purchased them in a while due to their quality control...or lack there of.

Fun shoeIt is a fun pair of shoes to run in. It responds well when you pick up the pace but is also comfortable when you settle in and just tick the miles off. I was concerned about the mesh upper since it has a little more elasticity than most other trail shoes, but it hasn’t been a problem even on technical descents.

Smooth running Door to Trail shoeI bought this shoe to be an everyday/long run trail shoe. It has certainly delivered. When I first got it I wasn't enthusiastic about it because of the instability. It is very padded around the ankle and tongue, like a lot of everyday road shoes, so my foot would move around bit as it would compress and decompress the all the padding. I ended up trying the runners knot and tightening the laces more than I normally would to keep the padding in a compressed state all the time. Since it is so padded you can really cinch them down with no lace bite. That was a game changer. These sap suckers came alive. They run lighter than they are, they are nimble, they are really smooth running, so much that you can definitely run on the pavement. If I'm going out for a base day or a long day, these are going on my feet. I also swear them casually all the time. Very comfortable. Don't expect them to be a hardcore trail shoe though. The grip is only good for light trail running (which makes it decent for the road), the toe bumper is low (which makes the shoes feel shorter) and not structured at all, the foam is real soft with no rock plate so you can feel all the rocks under you, which can be good or bad, the foam is soft but doesn't seem to rebound fast. All in all this is a fantastic do it all. It's great for casual, walking, running, whatever. Altra opened the door to a lot of consumers with this shoe I think.

My favorite Altra for runningI have used and loved a lot of Altras over the years for hiking, but never found a pair I connected with for running. I really like this shoe for trail running so far at the ~80 mile mark. The rocker feels great, it has a higher stack than a lone peak so you feel more protected, and you get a better lock down than you do with the Olympus. It honestly kind of feels like a slightly faster Hoka Speedgoat with a wider toe box. If this shoe can hold up to miles it will become a favorite for me and fill a gap in the Altra lineup that was missing (for me).

Feels good, but nor for zero droppersI wanted to try something different after only wearing the lone peak 5's over the last years and not liking the more recent lone peak versions. This shoe is super comfy and padded but my toes really jammed the front of the shoes on downhills and the back of the shoe really tore up the backs of my ankles. Feels like running on tippy toes. Probably just because I'm used to zero drop.
