Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stable

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

Sizing Note: We recommend ordering a half-size larger than your usual size for women's sizes in this shoe.

The Altra Timp 5 offers a balance of soft and responsive cushioning that allows it to excel for both long days and daily runs on the trails. The Altra EGO MAX midsole compound has been updated for a more cushioned ride that not only shields the legs from the rugged terrain but also propels runners effortlessly through diverse trails.

A key feature of the Timp 5 is its new Vibram outsole that provides unmatched grip on a variety of surfaces and conditions. The strategically carved flex grooves in the rubber further contribute to the shoe's adaptability to ensure a smooth ride on everything from rocky trails to rolling fire roads.

The breathable knit upper adds another layer of comfort, while the "Standard" foot shape strikes the perfect balance between the "Original" and "Slim" options that delivers a secure midfoot fit with a slightly roomier toe box. Overall, the Timp 5, with its soft and bouncy ride, will be a great option for casual trail runs, long mountain adventures, and everything in between.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Technologies

MIDSOLE

  • EGO MAX midsole is a compound designed with excellent resilience, providing high levels of durability and comfort.
  • InnerFlex grooves system provides additional flexibility and cuts weight for increased performance.
  • Natural Ride System (NRS) design includes a more natural, foot-shaped last, zero millimeter heel-to-toe drop, and metatarsal-specific shapes in the outsole to assist in proper foot mechanics and allow for more natural foot movement.
  • FootShape Toe Box allows the forefoot to be in its stable, powerful, natural alignment.

OUTSOLE

  • Vibram Megagrip uses sticky rubber that prioritizes grip and durability on uneven terrain.

UPPER

  • Quick-Dry Air Mesh creates an adaptable upper that provides premium comfort.
  • TPU Overlay provides a lightweight structure to secure the fit around the top of the foot.
  • Gaiter Trap System is a velcro patch and lace loop to secure trail running gaiters, preventing debris from building up inside the shoe.
  • Standard FootShape is Altra's most common FootShape that sits right in the middle of the Original and Slim fit options.

Great out of the box, then noodledI loved my Timps, and they were great for about 50 miles, but then it was like the arch support disappeared. I ended up buying insoles to try and support my arches, but that made the shoes just feel stiff and it didn't address the flex in the insole of the shoe.

Solid TimpI've put over 250 miles on my Timps. I've done a 50 mile run and plenty of long runs in my pair. They still have a ton of life left and are super comfortable. I've been running in the timps since the 2's and these are spectacular. No issues with my pair. I will get another one for a longer race I have coming up in 2025

Pas confortables (Not comfortable)(Two negative points: super rigid mesh, narrow toe box, so my toes are compressed. The shoe really has a very thick and stiff fabric. I think you have to wear it out a little and some more. Positive point: excellent all-terrain grip and super comfortable, cushioning and rather dynamic sole. You don't feel the shoes on your feet because they are so tonic. There is just this problem of adjustment. It is absolutely necessary to review the quality of the mesh. These are running shoes and not hiking shoes, we're not supposed to trudge through the mountains. Finished Altra for me, there are much better) Deux points négatifs : mesh hyper rigide, toe box étroite, du coup mes orteils sont comprimés.

Wanted to love but too tight to fixI run in Altra often, between lone peak and olympus, but wanted to try something new. These have all the details I was looking for in a new trail running shoe, but I couldn't keep them because of the tightness in the forefoot area. This isn't a width or length issue that could be fixed with a bigger size. It's the space for my forefoot area, right about where the laces start - it's way too tight. It might break in with enough miles, but I wasn't going to risk it since I already have issues with toes going numb while running in certain shoes that are a tad too tight.

Good shoe for faster pacesI bought this after looking at the model for several months. I have narrow feet, so Altras haven’t worked well for me previously, but this shoe fits me better. I took it out on a very rugged, rocky, dry southern California trail, and the early warmup miles felt a bit clunky, with the shoes struggling for grip on the larger, smoother rocks. But as I ramped up the pace and got onto some looser, smaller rocks and embedded, sharp stones, the shoes came alive, and were the perfect combination of trail feel and under-foot protection- no sharp hits from the terrain, yet no loss of feel, and very good, predictable grip. The next slower, Zone 2 run confirmed that these aren’t so comfy for easy runs, and work better as a fast workout or race shoe. Excited to put more fast miles on these babies!

Wanted to loveCushiony and roomy, true to size(length). I did not like the overlays which pinched my foot while flexing. My foot felt sloppy in them and could not achieve a snug fit. Ended up returning them.

Altra TimpI enjoyed that these have much more cushion than my other Altras. Bought half a size bigger for feet swelling and they can still be worn outside of ultras, but my toes do slide into the end a bit on the downhills, probably would be fine if they were my true size.

12th set of AltrasI have owned 12 sets of Altra's which I was very happy with. These Timp 5 lasted 105 miles and started to collapse on the inside sole. I will stick with the Olympus 5 as it has never let me down. Waste of money

Improved from Timp 4!I loved the earlier Timps then came the the Timp 4. I think we can all agree it was terrible quality, and the tongue...ugh. I was reluctant to try the Timp 5 but SO glad I did. It's one of my favorite trail runners- comfortable and grippy. The only reason I am giving it a 4 instead of 5 is the sizing varied widely. The size 9 I ordered from Altra seemed to fit perfect but the size 9 I ordered from Running Warehouse fit more like a 9.5 so I had to send it back.
