Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.

Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral Running Shoes

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stability Running Shoes

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

My new road shoeI've used Bondi's for my road shoe for years. These were on clearance so I thought I'd give them a try. I've had a few runs in them so far and I'm really liking them. I have a narrow foot and the fit is great. I have noticed no heel issues at all. No slipping, no rubbing, no anything. Only thing of note there is they are a bit tight to get on, nothing a shoe horn doesn't fix though. They are lighter than my Bondi's and not as bulky and wide. I like the cushioning and there seems to be some energy return with these as well. Not sure if it's the shoe or not, but my pace is about 20-25 seconds/mile faster with the Mach X2. Think I found a new road shoe.

Great shoeI just ran my 22nd marathon in this shoe. It was the 50th Marine Corps Marathon. I had completed training runs of up to 27 miles without any problems. These are light weight and the mesh covering is great for warm weather; not so much for cold or wet conditions. October 26th was warm and sunny (60s) so this shoe was ideal. The course was all on concrete and asphalt so I appreciated the thick cushioning, especially as an older runner (late 50s). The cost fits my budget too; not as expensive as the upgraded, super lightweight racers. I wouldn't recommend these for trails. I liked these so MUCH that I bought an extra pair! Best Tempo and Long Run ShoesI was worried about the heel situation everyone was complaining about, but I used a cedar shoe tree for a couple of days prior to wearing the shoe and I have never had any heel issues. These shoes don’t know how to go slow. I don’t wear them on my recovery or easy runs for that reason. Don’t think about it but them while you can while they are on clearance.

Best Race Shoes!I always thought the Hoka Clifton and Mach 5 were favorites until the Mach X2. This is the best racing shoe ever. It's breathable, has a great toe box, and is my best Hoka yet.

Close...I, like everyone else, read all about the heel issues with the Hoka Mach X 2 but decided to take a chance. I'll admit that I'm not a particular fan of the no heel counter as it always feels a bit loose, however I had no issues with rubbing. My issue is the lack of volume and width in the toebox despite my wearing the wide version. I've had this issue with regular width Hokas in the past which is why I tried the wide version. Just too low and too narrow for my foot, I guess. However, I will say that I love the midsole on this shoe. Rolls well and cushioning is spot on for nearly any distance. If I could just get them to fit my weird foot...

These shoes are like a cheat codeI have other running shoes, very popular ones. But Mach X2? It's like a cheat code of running. Run it fast=enjoy. Run it long=enjoy. Run it tempo=enjoy. Just don't run too slow, there are other shoes for that. I'm 188cm - 86kg and the foam is chef's kiss. No heel rubbing. Definitely getting X3 after this. One thing that could be improved is longer laces - I like longer laces generally.

Tempo trainerOnly ran 3 times in this shoe. Did a 10 miler today. Longest run so far this year. Coming off a couple of injuries. Like so far. Had original mach x. Hope they hold up over the miles. Price is a little high but what can you do.

Best daily TrainerHOKA has produced an incredible daily training shoe that balances cushion with poppy responsiveness that has me loving this shoe. I am 53 and run 5 days a week. Although I am not incredibly fast, this shoe provides incredible comfort while adding responsiveness in each step. I have.approximately 400 miles on my first pair and ordered this same shoe as a replacement. I run 4 to 5 half marathons a year and this is the perfect shoe for that longer distance run. Many reviews had noted lack of heel cushioning, this has not been a problem for me. I truly think the heal design provides enough cushion. I highly recommend this shoe if you are looking for a daily trainer than can go the distance while providing an overall great responsive ride.

Heel IssuesI decided to give this shoe a chance despite the mixed feedback on the heel - but sadly I had many issues with the right shoe rubbing on my heel causing bleeding so had to return. Shoe itself is great though - super cushiony and responsive. Would buy again if heel is fixed.

Great Speed Work ShoeThe combination of foams in this shoe is amazing. Works well at an easy aerobic pace as well as faster threshold work. Only area of improvement is the heel collar can cause some rubbing due to the lack of padding.

Hoka Mach X2 ReviewI've worn HOKA's for quite a while. The Mach X2 is a really good shoe. My previous shoe was a Saucony, and while it was a good shoe, the Mach X2 has more padding for a plusher run. The shoe is rugged enough for bad weather but light enough to make the run easy. I don't care for the new padding around the heel. It seems to irritate my Achilles a little bit. Hopefully, it's a temporary issue with my Achilles, not the shoe. I've run about 60 miles on the shoes so far and the tread is holding up well.

Good fun training shoe. At least for me.Though hesitant after reading about the heel trauma issues many runners have experienced, I gave it a shot, and I’m glad I did. “Fun”, springy feeling shoe that works for both easy and tempo paces for me. Narrow to medium foot, with relatively neutral biomechanics so I’m not terribly picky, but I did find this overall pleasant. I’m troubleshooting some foot pain issues and tried it with arch support inserts, and it was ok there too. Slightly better lockdown would’ve given it 5 stars. Laces are interesting but do seem to do the job

So CloseThis shoe is responsive and light but the heel is absolutely atrocious. There are 2 strips of foam along the back that rub and cause blisters. I used a scalpel to shave them down which helped significantly. I wish they hadn’t changed the padded heel design from the Mach X. I would’ve given it 5 stars then.

Good Ride with Slight Heal IssueOverall, I have enjoyed the ride of the HOKA Mach X 2. There are no heal counter issues on my left foot. In fact, on the left, I do not notice the shoe at all. However, I have experienced slight discomfort on the right heal counter area. I tried to mitigate the irritation issue preemptively with bandaids ... then adding a heal counter pad that changed the fit of the shoe. This shoe has a good ride, but might be an issue for some runners

Great shoe but causes blistersI ran in these shoes right out of the box for 5 miles. Amazing experience until I returned home to a bleeding heel on the left. The right heel was fine. I used some mole skin both on the heel and inside the heel collar next run the next day. Still rubbed and hurt! So disappointed! Sent them back. I've worn Hokas since they first came out years ago and have never had this kind of problem. I'm hoping hoka fixes this issue bc the running experience with this shoe is ideal!

This shoe could easily be a five StarI was very hopeful this was going to be my new daily trainer. The stack height was perfect. The cushion was perfect and it’s also a very good looking shoe. The one thing, though; it slips off the heel far too easily. Hoka’s have always been a bit too narrow for my feet, but some of the latest models do fit much better, though all the others do not slip off the heel like this one does. no runners not will hold it down, nothing. There’s simply no cup for the heel. So with a heel redesign, the shoe could easily be a five star. Maybe there are a few lucky ones out there in which the shoe does fit

So close to perfectI have the Alphaflys, Vaporflys, Metaspeed Edge Paris and Superblast 2 and the Mach X2 might be my favorite ride and midsole feel of all those shoes. They are so good at all paces, especially fast/workouts. I didn't have the heel issues others have, after I laced using a heel lock. That said, I do not like the heel and even with the thinnest sock on the market these shoes feel like they are STRANGLING my feet they are so tight. But I couldn't return them as they are so fun. Next time I'll try the wide version but I really don't like that boring black color scheme. So close Hoka, keep it up!

NICE!I stopped wearing the Hoka Cliftons after years of wearing cliftons bc the 9's felt a bit floppy to me. I recently wore NB 1080's for a year. They felt very cushioned and soft, but I missed the feel of the road/trail. Also I felt they slowed me down. I tried few shoes in between and none worked until the Mach X2. I ran 5 miles out of the box this morning, and they felt amazing and fast! Lightweight. The rocker and plate really helps launch you forward. I'm a forefoot runner so this is ideal for me. We shall see after a few more longer runs. The heel collar is soft and weird but did not bother me while running.

Great shoeI love this shoe! It is both cushy at slower speeds and snappy and faster paces. There are complaints about the heel lock and I could see that. I have worn these with Thorlo socks with padding in the achilles and that helped, along with the runners lacing to lock them in to my heel. After the first 3 runs, the fit was great and they locking in nicely.

Great upgrade from the original Mach x!I loved the Mach X, but wished that the sole would be able to withstand more wear, and the updated version seems to have a more durable sole. It's got a snappy feel with great response. I love doing speed workouts in this shoe!

Sweet rideI seldom write a review about anything, we're all busy enough. I maintain an average run of 20 - 25 miles a week. My Clifton 9 has been getting a load of beating and wanted something new or close to it, I was debating if I should get either a Mach6; Cielo x1 or Mach x 2. I ultimately decided on a Mach x2, ran a 10K just to get a feel, return it if something doesn't feel right. VERDICT - This shoe should be illegal. It's such a sweet ride, it positions me to run faster efficiently. I won't be returning this shoe. In fact - I love it so much I'm thinking of signing up for a race! Great job HOKA!

Mach X 2 for the win!Given this shoe’s predecessor’s poor reviews, I was a little skeptical. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The Mach X 2 checks all of the boxes for me. A perfect balance of cushion and responsiveness combined with a well designed upper. The minimal heel collar is perfect for me and I didn’t experience any rubbing or discomfort. This is definitely my go to for my next 1/2 and maybe even full marathon.

My New Favorite ShoeThe way it rolls, the way it bounces, the perfect amount of shock absorption while being super responsive! It just makes you want to keep running. Really can't praise the feel of it enough. The upper is amazing; super breathable and disappears on your foot. The fit is close to "true to size" but I found that it runs ever so slightly long. 1/2 size down felt better to me compared to my usual Hoka size in the Mach 6. I have a fairly narrow foot...I guess. The heel! Some people complain about the unusual heel design, but I found it easy to solve and actually (like another reviewer here) I prefer it. Feels sleek and invisible. Since it's minimal heel padding, going down 1/2 size not only made the fit better for the front of my foot, I think it also kept my heel from lifting by putting it against the back of the shoe securely. (I sensed the slightest bit of heel lift while trying the bigger size in store - but even that would have been fine for me). Also, with this shoe I like thinner and tighter (better fitting) socks. My first run was 10 miles ... going through all the paces slow and fast. I did the last two miles much faster than I normally would have because it felt so good to keep it moving!

Fantastic!Having read the reviews about the heel fit annd blister issues, I elected to try on in person before making a purchase. Heel lockdown has always been critical for me with a narrow heel and pronounced achilles. For reference I run in Boston 12, Mach 5 and 6, SL2 and Velocity Nitro. I am 6’2” and weigh around 175, am 58 years old and a 3:30 marathoner. No exaggeration to say the Mach X2 has exceeded my expectations. The heel collar is a non issue for me. Lockdown is spot on. Zero rubbing. The upper is form fitting and breaks in well. The midsole is so good with the PEBA and pebax plate. Firm but forgiving, propulsive. Preferable for me compared to the Boston which I like but seem to fight with over the course of longer runs. Outsole seems durable. I have a 7 and 13 mile run out of the box with no signs of wear. The Mach X2 has moved to the front of my rotation.

Favorite Daily Trainer in a WhileI love this shoe. I read plenty about it and had a pretty good feeling the negative comments about the upper wouldn't bother me and I was right. I wear a 14 in every shoe and this fit true to size. Beautiful super light and breathable upper. It's not even that the heel collar doesn't bother me, I LOVE it. Disappears on the foot. I wore Hoka's for the first time in the early 2010's when the Stinson and Clifton were in their first versions and I liked them at first but have mostly stayed away from the brand since those early years, with a few exceptions. They just kept on using old school EVA foam for so long. And that was my one worry about this shoe. Would the amount of EVA in the midsole, and particularly heel, bother me? Not at all. This shoe is freaking awesome. It's fast and light and comfortable. Durable. I love the PEBA foam that Hoka is using and now feel the need to try one of their all PEBA models. I think it's my second favorite foam after Adidas' LSP. Stack is higher than I'm used to but the plate negates any issues I've had with similarly high-stacked trainers (way too soft, ends up feeling like your running in sand and just wasting energy -- looking at you Asics Nova and New Balance SC Trainer). This shoe is a big time winner for me.
