Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stable

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Great update; needs some tweaks, runs smallI have almost 300 miles on this shoe including a 100 mile race through rocky, rooty, and muddy trails of TN and KY. I live in NC, so my home trails are similar. Grip: It’s amazing! I felt confident on varying terrain even short stretches of road. I’m so glad they decided on vibram outsole. Midsole: It’s soft and bouncy but definitely dies after a couple hundred miles. Ride/stability: I felt very sure footed and secure but it took a couple runs for me to really like this shoe. So if you don’t like it at first, give it a couple more runs. It feels a little clunky and unbalanced at first, like the heel is really heavy. I wish they would find a way to make the ride smoother. Fit: RUNS SMALL! It’s a combo of too short, the upper is so shallow, and toe box is not very wide. Definitely size up at least 1/2 size from your usual trail shoe size. Maybe even a full size up if you’re wearing these for a 100 miler like I did. I wish they would use the shape of the Ultrafly in this model. I’m not looking for an altra or Topo shape, but dang my feet were so squished like they were Saran wrapped in this shoe.

Big Fan!The combination of the ZoomX, carrier foam and outsole geometry give me the perfect combination of cushion, bounce, stability and support. Keeps my legs feeling fresh all day. My normal achilles problems are not irritated in these shoes. Outsole grip is great and the rock plate gives enough protection without getting in the way. Oddly stable on technical trails given the height but about average overall. I think the upper is really comfortable but I believe they could lose some weight here. There are simpler upper designs that would be just as good. No toe bumper which I really like but others may feel like they lack protection. I have 140 miles so far with very little wear, I ordered a second pair on sale to stock up before they change them.

Step up from the WildhorseI have loved this shoe so far. I have taken it through some pretty technical and very muddy trails. Traction is great. It sticks to wet bed rock like glue. Outsole also clears mud very quickly. I love my Wildhorses, as I've raced in them 3 times and went up to 50k in them with no issues, but once they get muddy I find myself having to stop and dig the mud out of the outsole in order to get traction again. I did not have this issue at all with this new Vibram outsole. Fit is good. Locks down my heel with absolutely no slipping. Width is average or maybe even slightly wider, but definitely a lower volume fit as the material lies right on top of your toes. Very comfortable and secure feeling to me, but if you like more room it may not be ideal for you. Cushioning is amazing. On the heavier side, but with the bounce you get from the ZoomX foam, it feels remarkably lighter on the run than what the specs suggest. Running quick in them feels just as great as cruising at a relaxed pace. I was concerned with the higher stack height when it comes to stability, but once my foot was in the shoe and I got that great lockdown I honestly never even thought about stability issues. Even bombing down rocky decents felt effortless and stable. Overall, great shoe. Will definitely use these for my upcoming 50k and my 50 miler after that.

Nike Zegama Trail 2 way betterI purchased a size 10.5 Nike Zegama Trail 2 in May. Immediately out the box I could tell they would be better then the old model. The old model where constructed with a harder materials. Especially in and around the toe box. Which caused my toe to blister. Nike Zegama Trail 2 are much lighter and more giving when running on trails but keep your foot locked in. The shoe really has great response on all surfaces. Legs feel fresh from beginning to the end of runs. One draw back is that Nike is not putting long enough laces in their shoe had to buy longer ones.

Best Nike Trail Shoe In YearsI was surprised by this shoe. It's one of my favorite trail shoes in the last 5 years. I was nervous to try this one because of the high stack height. Typically high stack height trail shoes create a stability issue for me on technical trails. However, not the case with this shoe. The ground feel is still very much there but also soft. I believe it's because NIKE went with the lower drop of only 4mm. Brilliant! It's a great mix of comfort, ground feel and pop. I should note when I trail run I land more on the midfoot to forefront. There are two issues which is why I couldn't give a whole 5 stars even though I wanted too. They are a little bit heavy, but this is made up for by all the positives. I wouldn't try and run anything short and fast like 5k/10k on the trails. The other issue is they are hot. My first run was 8 miles on the trails, with 91% humidity. The tongue of the shoe was soaked, which also adds more weight when the shoe collects sweat and water. All in all, I would recommend this shoe and it will be my go to trail trainer for this year and I'll likely use it in races from 15k to 50k.
