Overview
Designed for both men and women who trail run, the UltrAspire Basham vest wowed our testers with its highly comfortable fit and feel, but the vest fell short when it came to the included bottle and a troublesome storage pocket. This vest features a low-profile design that feels like a second skin and easily adapts to a wide variety of body sizes. Although it offers one size that fits most, you can easily dial in the fit using the adjustable front cinch cords. The main issue both of our testers faced was with the included bottle. It proved difficult to take in and out of the holster while running and one tester experienced a faulty lid that resulted in some leakage. Overall, the fit and feel are spot-on, and with some future adjustments, this vest could be a top contender at an excellent value.

Our In-depth Look
Fit
Liz: "This pack is incredibly comfortable. It's the most breathable and cool vest that I have ever run in, and the unique shape allows the vest to fit my body just right. I pretty much forget that I am wearing it as I run."
Kaitlin: "It was comfortable enough to forget I was wearing a vest. The wave shape of the back allows for maximum breathability and minimal irritation. The adjustments make it very accommodating to a variety of body shapes while still feeling secure."
Pack Storage
Liz: "While this vest doesn't have a ton of storage, it surprised me with how much of my gear that it was able to fit. I could easily store all the nutrition I needed for a long run, and it still allowed me to carry a light running jacket as well."
Kaitlin: "The pockets were perfectly placed for me. I could have used one more zipper pocket, but otherwise, all of them were really useful. The bottom ones were great for stashing nutrition or trash, and the upper chest pockets were well-thought-out. Having them sit on the upper chest was more comfortable and allowed me to keep an eye on important items, instead of having to push in my chest to make sure I didn't drop anything."
Hydration
Liz: "While the bottle is easy to drink out of, it is difficult to get out of the pack while on, and then it easily falls out when taking the pack on and off. I would have preferred the ability to use other bottles instead of the one specifically designed for this pack."
Kaitlin: "The angle of the bottle is difficult for me to access. If you have tight shoulders, this vest isn't for you. I could fit smaller soft flasks in the front, but that kind of defeats the purpose of this design. The bottle was soft and didn't taste like plastic, but mine did leak. Hopefully, that was just an issue with the one I received."
Quality
Liz: "I don't have any concerns about the durability of this pack. Even though it has mesh fabric throughout, it seems very durable. The only thing that didn't seem like the best quality was the bottle. It seemed flimsy, and the lid looked like it could start to leak over time."
Kaitlin: "The material has a nice, next-to-skin feel and great storage options. The shape and simple adjustments provide a really accommodating design."
Value
Liz: "This vest offers a lot of value for its cost. It really holds all you need for a multi-hour trail run and is a lot less expensive than other options. I think the main issue with its value is in this vest's versatility. It doesn't have the capability to hold a bladder so you are out of luck if you want to carry more water for an all-day adventure or in hot weather."
Kaitlin: "The features, storage, fit, and feel are really impressive, but the design of the back bottle didn't work well for me. Taking the bottle in and out of the holster was fine for hiking, but it wasn't great for running."

I have mixed feelings about this vest. In terms of comfort, UltrAspire did an amazing job. The pack stays in place, doesn't bounce or chafe, and feels incredibly breathable and cool on my body. I like the wide straps and placement of the front pockets. My main issues are with the bottle and closure of the top pocket. While the mesh pockets in the back do a great job of stretching to store way more than you expect, the smaller magnet used for closure at the top did not prevent my phone or nutrition from falling out as I was taking the vest on and off. If the pack was turned upside down as I was putting it on, those items would go flying. Thankfully, this never happened on a steep trail or somewhere that made retrieving those items difficult. I feel like this pocket does a better job of holding extra clothing or being stuffed full. My other issue was with the bottle. The flat side lies comfortably at the small of your back, but it limits your ability to swap it out for other bottles. I also had issues with the bottle sliding out of the side as I was getting the vest on and off. Overall, when running, this pack feels awesome. It holds more than I expected for its low-profile design, but many may find that picking their items off the ground when trying to get the pack on and off can get to be a nuisance. |

The mesh wrapped my body comfortably. Even with a D cup chest, it still felt accommodating. The material was breathable and featured intuitive front pockets being at chest height, and the bottom mesh pockets being high but open. It made storing important items like keys or ID in the zipper pocket and keeping them in sight. The lower pockets, being open, made it easy to access essentials like nutrition. The front adjustments are easy to secure and the vest didn't bow in front but stayed flush against my chest as I was running. The hydration portion of the vest was a miss for me. The bottle was very hard to get in and out of the holster. It's not a great angle for me, maybe it is for others with more flexible shoulder, but seems like it needs to sit lower on the back. I had to stop most times to put the bottle back in the holster, and on harder and hotter runs, it was quite frustrating. The upper back pouch could fit a small reservoir (around 1L) if I had not filled it up all the way, but it wasn't secure, probably because that wasn't the intention of the back storage. Additionally, this might have just been an issue with my bottle, but it leaked the whole time I was running, making the right side of my body damp. |
