What's New
The Skechers GOrun Razor Excess is loaded with everything you already know and love from the Skechers Razor line: a responsive Hyper Burst foam midsole, a grippy Goodyear rubber outsole, and a lightweight upper design. What sets the Excess apart from its fellow Razors is the addition of a few extra millimeters of cushioning in the midsole for softer landings and extra protection, as well as a slightly wider footbed for a stable running experience. The Razor Excess also has a padded heel counter and collar, ideal for keeping runners comfortable on their longest miles.
The Bottom Line
If you are a fan of the Razor and want a shoe that delivers the same responsive midsole with extra protection to take on long distances, then the Razor Excess is the perfect shoe for you. The Hyper Burst delivers the same responsive ride that runners have loved in other Razor models, but with a higher stack to keep wearers comfortable and protected over long distances.

Our In-Depth Look
Shoe Softnessi
The Skechers Razor Excess is superbly balanced, offering runners a soft underfoot feel while retaining Hyper Burst's signature snappy energy return. With the additional stack height, the Razor Excess has abundant cushioning to keep wearers comfortable no matter the demands of the run.
Becky: "The initial step-in feel is not the softest, but it feels well-cushioned and moderately soft while running. This isn't your ultra-soft daily trainer, but as one who prefers soft shoes, the Razor Excess is the perfect balance for most runs."
Matt: "The Razor Excess has a few extra millimeters of Hyper Burst foam, which means that this shoe has some awesome squish to it. I thought it had a very soft initial step-in feel, yet I never felt like I was drowning in cushioning when out on my long runs. Overall, I was very pleased with the softness from miles 1 to 15."
Jonathan: "The Hyper Burst midsole in the Razor Excess definitely has some give to it. I sink into the shoe nicely upon landing. It's smooth and comfortable and sets me up well for every step."

Ride/Energy Returni
Skechers' Hyper Burst midsole gives the Excess an extremely responsive ride. The midsole is highly protective, absorbing the impact of the road without difficulty, and delivers an explosive return that makes running at faster tempos especially fun. The rockered geometry further contributes to a fast and smooth ride that runners will be looking forward to no matter what run is on the schedule.
Becky: "The Hyper Burst midsole is very responsive and feels bouncy underfoot. The Razor Excess has become my go-to shoe for marathon pace or tempo runs over the last several weeks."
Matt: "Skechers has found the perfect combination of softness and responsiveness in the Razor Excess. This shoe was nimble and springy enough for my track workouts but also soft enough to handle long, easy miles. This combination kept me reaching for the Razor Excess before every run."
Jonathan: "I felt like the Razor Excess was helping me not waste any energy while running. I think the word 'bouncy' perfectly describes the ride of the Excess. The shoes had a protective give to them at footstrike, which was always followed by a snappy return. It feels like the Excess is propelling me forward throughout the run."

Underfoot Protectioni
What happens when you add a few extra millimeters of Hyper Burst foam to a shoe's midsole? You get a responsive ride that has enough underfoot protection to take on marathons. The Excess may not be built like a maximalist shoe, but runners should have no issues staying comfortable throughout any type of run in these lightweight trainers.
Becky: "The Razor Excess has enough cushioning for a half or full marathon. Lately, it has been my first choice for midweek long runs with some marathon pace miles and tempo pace thrown in."
Matt: "Thanks to the extra few millimeters of stack height in the midsole, the Razor Excess has great underfoot protection on the roads. Even though this shoe is pretty lightweight, my legs and feet still felt great after a ton of miles."
Jonathan: "You can find thicker shoes out there, but the Excess has plenty of cushioning for piling on miles. Even better is that all of the cushioning comes in a lightweight package."

Flexibilityi
The Skechers Razor Excess combines a slight flex with a Hyper Arc rocker design to create an ultra-smooth, highly efficient running experience. The slightly wider base of the outsole provides runners with additional stability without sacrificing the nimbleness of the shoe. Do not be surprised if you find yourself continually reaching for the Excess to fulfill all your training needs.
Becky: "The transition from heel to toe is smooth. It's got a nice amount of flexibility, but it doesn't feel unstable. Compared to the Razor, the Excess seems to have a wider base, which feels like an upgrade to me."
Matt: "This shoe flexes rather well thanks to the outsole's segmented rubber, and the Hyper Burst cushioning is so soft. The Razor Excess' rocker geometry and flexibility create a really smooth ride that feels natural."
Jonathan: "There is a slight rocker to the shoe that delivers an ultra-smooth ride. It strikes a balance between being propulsive but not controlling. As such, the shoe excels at a variety of paces."

Upper Supporti
Skechers crafted the upper of the Excess with a lightweight and durable mono-mesh material that is incredibly breathable and will keep the wearer's feet cool even in the hottest conditions. The upper is structured throughout, fitting securely in the heel before opening up to a spacious toe box. That being said, the fit is very voluminous and may not be suited to every runner's tastes.
Becky: "The upper mesh material is light and breathable. I have also found the shoe to be very durable, even after putting quite a bit of mileage on it. I like the higher-volume fit of the upper, but I understand that this may not be for everyone. People with narrower feet may want to consider a different shoe."
Matt: "I tend to love a mono-mesh upper, but the Razor Excess' upper felt sloppy to me. It is very lightweight and durable, but I thought there was too much material, which contributed to a poor lockdown. The toe box also puckered a little bit in the shoes I tested."
Jonathan: "The fit of the Razor Excess is not very adaptable to different foot shapes and may not work for some runners. For my particular needs, the midfoot volume is too high. I had to pull the laces tight to get the secure lockdown I needed. The heel of the Excess is comfortably snug, and the toe box had plenty of space for my toes to splay. Overall, the fit was functional."

Individual Thoughts

The Skechers Razor Excess is a fun and lively shoe, possessing similar qualities to other shoes in the Razor lineup. If you like the Razor 3 and Razor +, but want a little more underfoot protection and a more accommodating fit, then the Excess is the shoe for you. This lightweight trainer has quickly become a personal favorite that will remain a staple in my shoe rotation for uptempo days.

The Skechers Razor Excess really gets me excited to go out for a run. No matter what run I have planned for the day, I keep reaching for the Razor Excess. This shoe is lightweight, bouncy, and soft without being mushy. It has all the features I look for in a versatile daily training shoe. I always feel protected underfoot while running in the Excess. The smooth ride and Hyper Burst midsole helped me feel fast during all of my workouts. If Skechers could just dial in the upper a little more, the Razor Excess would be an all-around winner of a shoe.

I am a huge fan of the ride and feel of the Razor 3 and Razor +. The Razor Excess is stacked slightly higher and has a slightly wider base compared to its fellow Razors. What does this mean? Simply, that this shoe is better suited to long runs and accumulating miles. The Razor Excess handles long runs with ease.
Both the Razor and Razor Excess feel great for hour-long runs, but the Razor Excess is the shoe of choice as the duration of the run extends. If you are looking for faster runs, such as intervals, then the Razor is the better option given its faster overall feel. Looking to run easy? Then get the Razor Excess to provide the extra protection your body will need. Doing maintenance runs? Then it's a coin flip, and either one can suit your needs.
I would pick the Razor for races, interval training, and tempo runs, but I would use the Razor Excess for everything else. The benefit of having both shoes is you get a fairly similar feel on every run with a more dialed-in performance for any given run.
