Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stable

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

Product Details:

What's in a name? The Salomon S/Lab Pulsar 4, like its cosmic namesake, is famous for rapid motion and high-speed energy. Developed with elite pro Rémi Bonnet, this fourth chapter of the iconic trail racing shoe is more robust and multi-capable than before. That means a greater variety of runners can now discover its lightweight and energetic racing experience.

Its dual-foam midsole offers increased stack height and a superfoam top layer for a propulsive boost on flats and climbs. Combined with a thin Profeel Film, your feet are now more protected when bombing down technical descents. Also note the Active Chassis design that overwraps both sides of the heel cup, enhancing bucket seat stability over the trickiest terrain.

Up top, industry-leading Matryx material creates a lightweight, breathable, and bombproof upper. Down below, 4 mm lugs of sticky Contagrip rubber deliver aggressive bite to sharpen your confidence across mud, scree, and everything in between.

We've seen the Salomon S/Lab Pulsar 4 on the feet of the world's best at Golden Trail World Series® races. Whether you're chasing podiums or picking up the pace in your local trail races, just cinch the Quicklaces and torch sub-ultras like never before!

What You'll Love:

  • Superfoam energy return for powerful performance on technical terrain
  • Increased stack height for bombing descents and late-race comfort

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

It’s not the 3I’ve been a huge fan of the S/Lab Pulsar line up and my all time favorite was the three. I believe they truly nailed the perfect sub ultra shoe. With that said, the 4th iteration feels similar to the 3* but with different lugs, 1.5oz heavier per shoe, and lastly the Matryx upper doesn’t breathe as well. With the previous version you could hold the shoe up to the sun and see light through the Matryx, with this you can’t see any light when held up. The shoe would be still be great for sub ultra distances, but I personally don’t see the benefit of the added weight. The shoe feels stable and race worthy, but you might be wishing they chose a more breathable upper.

Close to S/lab ultra 2I have been waiting for a shoe that would be as close as the Salomon Ultra2 as possible. The Ultra 2 was my favorite trail running shoe Salomon ever made. The Ultra 3s fell very short. The Pulsar 4 is lighter and more agile with more of a cushion under foot, but the fit in the toe box and mid foot feels almost the same. Ground feel seems to match the Ultra 2s with a bit more padding over the rocky terrain. I have less than 50 miles at this point on the shoes, we will see how they hold up over time.
