Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.

Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral Running Shoes

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stability Running Shoes

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

AwesomeSuch an amazing fit and ride. Literally don't even think about it being on the foot. Toe box feels wider than usual for a Salomon and they do feel longer, even when compared to my standard Genesis. I still ran 20 miles +3K fresh out of the box and they were great!

Good, but fit is just okayGreat shoe, lighter than the Salomon Genesis. However, some odd fit around the toebox leads to some chafing

Pricey but worth it!I used to run exclusively in Speedgoats but the last few iterations turned me away. I then tried Salomon’s s/lab ultra 2 and then 3 and have been hooked ever since. I didn’t think I could like a shoe more than the s/lab ultra 3 but then this beast came along! By far my favorite shoe ever. Super comfortable, great grip, very durable, and fantastic protection. The best thing for a shoe is if I don’t notice it and don’t have to worry about it on those long ultras. This is that shoe, it fits so well and is so comfortable I can just enjoy the run. Does a great job protecting against rocks and the lacing system is amazing as usual. They are pricey but imo they last longer way longer than my old Speedgoats not to mention they are much more comfortable.

Good shoe, but not $200 goodQuality seemed on par with Salomon. Shoe seemed to be built well with good supportive cushioning. Runs bit long. I think it could be a good shoe, but not at that pricepoint.

Ignore the haters about the sizingSalomon trail shoes have almost always run a bit long compared to conventional US sizes. Anyone that’s ever worn them knows this. The people giving this shoe bad reviews and writing it off simple over sizing apparently have never worn Salomon’s, read or watched reviews of Salomon’s or heard of exchanging for a half size down. Maybe they’re new runners? Anyway, great shoe. Size half size down. Easy as that. If you wanna try your true to size, go for it. But the shoe will likely be long. RW makes exchanges super easy.

Best trail shoeExtremely versatile while being good at pretty much everything. Great for long and technical routes, but still good at cruising down smooth fire road or single track. Could also race short in it, but for that I’d prefer the Nnormal Kjerag or the S/Lab Pulsar.

ImpressiveThis is an outstanding mid to long distance mountain racer. Excellent arch support with a precise fit through the heel and midfoot that opens up in the toe box. Runs a half size large.

Salomon S-L Genesis tearAfter the FIRST run with this shoe, there was a tear on the pocket where the shoelace was supposed to be tucked in. The FIRST run! It is now my #1 shoe, but I hope that the tear does not get any bigger so I can enjoy this for at least a year. I am stuck with this and I am not recommending this shoe.

Salomon s-l genesisThis is definitely a great shoe to consider if you have a race lined up in Europe this summer, or a multi-day adventure planned, or just a training shoe that you can rely on for most distances and conditions

The wide, narrow, and long of it?This Genesis shoe was maybe the first Salomon shoe that had me optimistic about toebox width. I squished around in it, laced and unlaced it, and found it roomy enough in my usual 10.5 - the thing is, it was remarkably LONG for the size. I mean an extra inch long at the end, so I knew I couldn't trust myself with it (toe stubs, trips, and falls are my 3 middle names). Bummed as it felt very comfortable, the grip seemed good, loved the fit, the lacing, and bootie style fit but the length was too much to ignore. Maybe if I was ONLY doing flat, buffed out trails or rail to trail pathways, but for mountains? Technical stuff? Forget it, I would have ended up on the forest floor. So close to being a winner, Salomon, so close.

Great shoe (if it fits!)I really wanted to keep these but like most Salomon shoes, the last of the shoe is just a bit off for most American feet. Ordered my usual size and I was DELIGHTED that they were wide enough but they were also at least 1-1.5" too long, like way long. This made me nervous about toe-stubs and trips, something no one ever needs to experience on trails because of long shoes, so back they went but this shoe came close to being the best Salomon option for me. So, so close.

Possibly the most underrated trail shoe everEasily Salomon's most underrated, the Genesis is damn near perfect for any trail condition. Enough comfort and cushion for a 50k(just ran Hyner 50k in them) fast and light enough for short technical trail, drain great and shed mud, and feel great over roads and hard pack. Better than the Ultra 3 in every aspect. Grippy on all surfaces and so far incredibly durable with about 100 miles in them. Looking to use these for a 100 miler in September, so that'll be a great test.
