Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stable

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Technologies

MIDSOLE

  • DREAM superfoam is a nitrogen-injected supercritical blend of PEBA/EVA. This main bottom layer forms the full length of the shoe and provides high rebound and longevity. The secondary 10 mm top drop-in layer of supercritical EVA delivers additional underfoot plushness and responsiveness.
  • VECTIV 3.0 carbon fiber plate technology includes a two plate system. The bottom-loaded, full-length, carbon fiber plate becomes three-pronged in the forefoot for adaptability on technical terrain. The top-loaded full-length H-plate of recycled carbon/TPU focuses solely on stability, with dual wings along the midfoot and forefoot.
  • Rocker geometry enables long-lasting propulsion.

OUTSOLE

  • SURFACE CTRL rubber creates a 1-piece outsole with 3.5 mm lugs for excellent traction on varied terrain. 10% of the rubber is sourced from smallholder regenerative farms.

UPPER

  • Seamless engineered mesh of TPU and recycled polyester is supportive, hydrophobic, and quick-drying. The upper is 51% recycled.
  • Skeletal support underlays and integrated tongue wings provide a precise foothold.

A fantastic and unique bouncy beastI've tested these now on a number of torturous and technical routes, and its amazing how versatile they are. They are super lively, bouncy, and plush - but not remotely "dead" as one person wrote here. They have this souped up rocker geometry that really moves you through a foot strike quickly. This rocker geometry actually makes them really awesome in technical terrain bc you can place the (wide) forefoot wherever you need it. Just like the rest of the TNF lineup, the lockdown on the upper is AWESOME. The outsole grips and rips on smooth limestone. When you get on more groomed trails they can fly down the trail like few shoes. A little heavy, but not very noticeable on foot. These reward efficient, powerful runners, and very slow hikers should probably stay away. No bites from the plate on my average vol foot. Overall a sensational race shoe that feels like nothing else on the market.

almost therei actually have only a couple things i feel need corrected on these is the weight especially for a long distance race or just run, lighter would be much better & at least 4mm lugs . other than that i really enjoyed these on my first couple of test runs on technical terrain ,i have a wide foot & i had no problems in the forefoot area or with the stability wings in the front of the shoe rubbing great lockdown in the heel area as well. Northface has done some very good improvements over the last version . i wear size 10 & they were true to fit for me

Midsole feels deadI think everything about this shoe is great except for the midsole. I think having the two plates doesn’t give the foam enough room to compress and decompress leaving you with a dead feeling midsole. The vectiv pro 2 is a way better experience

Shockingly Bad Design ChoicesI am a fairly avid runner in the south eastern USA (North GA), and have a bit of a running shoe problem. I have tried a ton of road "super shoes" and basically ALL of the trail "super shoes". And I almost NEVER return a shoe once I buy it. In the last few years, there's maybe been 2 or 3 shoes that I have tried that have been bad enough for me to return. I will be returning these though. After two shorter runs in this shoe, it's clear that the design of the carbon wings is painfully flawed. No matter the pace, you are almost sure to feel the plate rubbing on your foot as you take each step. The wings on the shoe are one of worst designs I have ever experienced. Beyond the wings though, the upper is pretty rad, and I like the shape/lockdown in the heel. So, if spending $250 for a good upper and heel, but an awful underfoot experience seems like a good idea, please reach out, I'd love to sell you some magic beans.
