Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stable

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Great gripWhen I first tried the shoe on out of the box I was not impressed. After one run they fit perfectly and this has become my favorite shoe. The grip is absolutely incredible on wet granite slabs and the shoe has the perfect amount of cushioning and stability for very technical terrain. The lockdown is perfect and so is the ride. I wear a US 10.5 in every shoe except for this shoe and the kjerag I went for a size 10. The fit felt tight at first but after a 6 mile trail run they formed to my feet perfectly. I would take the grip on this shoe over vibram for New Hampshire trails.

VJ’s breakoutOutside of OCR VJ’s offerings, all had some flaws but Maxx2 is a home run. Maybe not if you need high stacked squishy PEBA with embedded carbon, but these grip, they are agile, they give room (DEFINITELY go half size up though) and at the same time are secure, and can go some distance (easy 50k, likely more depending on efficiency). There are always tradeoffs and on frozen ground these are hard, even as someone who leans away from cushy, but no issue when warmer, though speaking of warmer I think the worst thing will be a likely hot experience during the summer. But you can never have it all while these have so, so much (seem likely durable too but can’t say for sure at this point)

Everything I imagined, with a wrinkleThis shoe checked all of the boxes for me: Relatively light for its stack and lug depth, fit true to size, great grip, and good ground feel and response in the midsole. The shoe seems to run slightly long, as I went a 1/2 size down from my usual and the fit was perfect. However, after two great runs and a total of 23 miles on the shoes, I believe a manufacturing defect in the left shoe caused the ankle collar fabric to start cutting into my foot and gave me a large blister. Unfortunately, I returned the shoes as I couldn't resolve the problem by changing the lace pattern or by wearing taller socks. I'd love to try this shoe again if the ankle collar problem is resolved.

Best gripLove these, best grip on the planet is no joke. Usually VJs are much too narrow for me but these are actually comfortable, so glad to have them!

VJs: my go to racing shoeI wasn’t sure what to make of the new VJ maxx2. I’m a big fan of the first iteration of this model. The new model reminds me of other trail shoes; nice upper construction, soft midsole and the best grip on the planet. I have various brands of trail shoes, Sportiva, Salomon, Hoka, ASICS, and Saucony. But more often than not I usually grab my VJs for my Spartan adventures.Theses VJs out of the box were very comfortable. I took them out on a 15 mile training day with about 3000 ft elevation gain in the woods with no real issues…. Nice…I’ve always liked Vjs lock fit system and felt very secure in their shoes. The toe box is larger than its first iteration and allows for a little wiggle room up front. You’ll have to experiment with size. Some reviews have mentioned sizing 1/2 or so down in size. I sized up a half. My foot sits wider so I have to make up by sizing 1/2 up( 10.5 to 11). I don’t know if there’s a perfect shoe for everyone. It’s always about the fit . Once I’m locked in and get running, I can really focus on eating up mies..Theyre just a lot of fun and can handle most surfaces and terrain. I know these shoes are not the most attractive shoe out their, but where they lack in looks, they definitely make up in performance and feel. I’m currently trying to find another VJ maxx2 in 11 now, but unavailable at the moment…I’m hoping to get another pair soon.

Truly the best trail shoe out thereTrue to the legendary VJ Maxx trail runner, the Maxx2 boasts best-in-class grip and an amazingly secure fit (with their "Fit-Lock" piece on the mid-foot), as you would expect. It's lighter than the Maxx 1, with a much better foam. By better, I mean more responsive on the uphills and more forgiving on the downhills, esp if there's pavement. I highly recommend this shoe for any mountain goat.
