Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.

The midsole features Lightstrike Pro Foam, which not only provides runners with a lightweight and highly responsive experience but also ensures protection over the long miles of an ultramarathon. To enhance energy return with each step, adidas incorporates TPE energy rods in the midsole. These rods help to propel the runner forward while adapting to uneven terrain.     The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

    The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

Would Recommend
Great traction and lightweightI used these shoes to run Rim2Rim2Rim in the Grand Canyon and found the traction to be helpful, as there was a lot of slippery sand on rocks and steps to work through. They are also lightweight, and in a situation where you're pulling long miles, any weight reduction helps. They feel unremarkable when you first put them on, as another reviewer noted, but they felt comfortable the entire run.

So fast, but upper so uncomfortableI was so excited to try these. Had to size 1/2 size down for a good fit. Once I found the right length, I felt ready to go. Tested them out on a non-technical trail run, and included some fast intervals. Holy moly did these shoes feel amazing at first — light, fast, and smooth. I thought I’d found the perfect race shoe. But in the last couple miles of my trail run, I felt some pain below my big toe joint — in both feet, but particularly terrible in one foot. When I finished the run, my foot hurt so much. It’s now two weeks later and my foot (below big toe joint) STILL hurts from wearing these shoes from that one run. The upper in these shoes is just so narrow, with no give, due to the plastic-y material. They’re amazing shoes, no doubt, if the upper fits your feet. Was just too narrow across the top of my foot, for me. Pinched my big toe joint and my little toe. Unfortunately it’s not the shoe for me. Wish these shoes were made with a softer/more flexible upper.

Great At FirstLoved these at first. Ran a successful 50k in them with no problem other than having to be cognizant of rolling my ankles. But, just rocked them for a trail 1/2 marathon and finished with bloody feet. The medial section right at the base of the tongue gusset (arch area) folds in and rips the skin off your foot. Seeing a bunch of other people here and on Reddit with the same issue. Let’s just say recovery has been brutal. Will be hesitant to wear these again. Hoka Tecton X3 for me for races moving forward.

Quite impressive faster trail runnerGood technology gets out of the way. This shoe doesn't feel very special when I put it on, it doesn't feel like it has a theory about how I should run in it. It's so light it basically disappears, but gives you great propulsion. First time I laced up in these shoes I won my first ever trail race ($1k prize, the shoes paid for themselves and then some?). CONS: 1. they're fairly tippy, so I roll both ankles in these shoes most runs. About average tippy for the sort of shoe they are: e.g. about the same as a hoka speedgoat 2. The weird tongue attachments have caused me blisters near the arch of the foot, especially if they aren't flush with your foot & the shoe, which can become the case when I put them on or anytime during a run. I seem to have solved this with thicker socks. 3. The laces are trying to mimic the vapor/alpha-fly line with the ribs, but they don't do it as well, so the laces are a tiny bit annoying. I actually prefer the ribs, but wish Adidas could execute it better. Not as magic as a vaporfly is on roads, but this is my go-to trail shoe now for 50k and below.

Would Recommend
Fantastic trail shoeBeen using the Terrex all summer for trail runs in Southern CA. Firm on foot but soft on the trails. I did size down .5 as they are kinda long but the width is great on my slightly fatter foot. They dont move around or shift on the down hills and the grips on packed sand/ gravel is great. Note, I'm mostly on groomed trails so what these are like on aggressive grade, loose rock trails I don't know. Love them so far and have 126 miles on them so far this summer.

Would Recommend
Great Super Shoe!!!Felt light and bouncy right off the bat. Being a road runner I am used to the vaporflys but these felt almost the same on my feet with a slightly wider toe box. Felt super stable with these on. They are very light and do not retain water. I wore them for the Leadville 100 and they held up great through rocks, roads, and creek crossings. They are still in good shape and I will probably be able to get 2-3 more 100 mile races out of them. No complaints at all!

Not Worth the HypeIt's not what I was expecting when I tried this shoe out. Read the reviews, it is true, you have to go down a 1/2 size for fit properly. The spongy-ness of the shoe felt good on fast downhills but not made for technical terrain. The insole which was stitched into the sole was not pleasant, aggressively rubbing on my arch, both sides. This shoe isn't for my feet & that's okay. Main takeaway: go down a 1/2 size from your normal shoe size! Happy trails.

Good ultra shoe, soft, fairly stableFirstly, order 1/2 size down from say Nike. 11.3oz in size US12.5M. Good toebox room, lockdown good though not stellar, tongue is not fully gusseted but stack is high enough that a cheap gaiter should keep out most gravel. Soft heel absorbs shock well yet is stable enough for moderate terrain, which the midsole rods help with. No serious complaints for a longer run hardground shoe.

Would Recommend
The best trail super shoeFinally, Adidas didn't compromise and made a real super shoe for trails. Super: 1) High stack height springy foam; 2) Very accentuated rocker (vital for ALL running shoes); 3) Carbon plate for rebound; 4) Light weight. Trail: Grippy rubber outsole for traction on rock. Bonus: 1) Wide toebox with narrow heel (no one has a wide heel!) 2) Mesh upper is perfect combination of support and breathability; 3) Laces are super light and hold a knot; 4) Eyelets are plastic-reinforced so won't rip out. Bad: 1) Flaming Orange color is garish - upside is people will see you coming, and presuming you must be fast, get out of your way 2) No Heel Cup. Reducing un-needed structure and weight is great, but a sculpted heel is important to hold your foot in place. I laced tightly and pro-actively put a strip of moleskin over my heel bone. SUMMARY: For cruiser trails - think WS100 - these are killer. More than 4% faster, because you feel better and there is less wear on your legs. For very technical trails, no super shoe is appropriate, because a high stack height and rocker is inherently unstable. If you're on terrain where you can stride out, these are fantastic.

The first real super shoe for trailsNo other shoe has reminded me of when I first put on Vaporfly 4%s in the way this shoe did. It’s held up great, too: 250 miles or so and still springy. I had to size up half a size (but was really on the boundary).
