Online Gait Analysis
Find the Right Running Shoes for Your Stride

Updated: August 13, 2025 by Bryan

What is Gait Analysis?

Gait analysis is a valuable assessment tool in helping to determine the best running shoes suited for your body's natural movement and biomechanics. The analysis involves observing and evaluating your ankle alignment and examining your stride and foot strike to measure the degree of pronation (how your foot rolls) during the gait cycle. A stability or support shoe may be recommended depending on your running style and level of pronation. There are three types of pronation: neutral, underpronation (supination), and overpronation. Learn more about the different levels of pronation and stability shoes in our guide.

FAQ

• Why is it important to understand pronation?

Understanding pronation is important in decreasing the risk of injuries and optimizing your running performance. By knowing how your feet move and land, you can wear the appropriate shoes (or additional insoles) that provide the level of support, cushioning, and stability you need to maintain proper foot alignment for a comfortable experience. With this information, you can also better craft your training and exercise programs by strengthening your feet, promoting recovery, and improving your running and walking efficiency.

• How does pronation affect your running and walking?

Pronation affects your body's mechanics, the way your foot strikes in contact with the ground, and how it absorbs shock with each step. During walking or running, when your foot hits the ground, it naturally pronates and rolls inward to absorb the shock and support your body weight. People who roll inward too much (overpronate) or insufficiently (supinate) are at a greater risk of injury, which is why it's important to wear the right type of shoes to support your body's biomechanics and overall health.
