Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral Running Shoes

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stability Running Shoes

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Great ShoeUsed this shoe for racing right out of the box because it felt great. Worked for me and even felt better than my Hoka Carbon X that I usually race in. The cushion and toe off was exceptional. I'm 72 long time runner, 50 plus years, and triathlete. 5"8', 140. Had a great Race 8:05 pace for 5K.

Good shoeShoe is light and fast, and fairly well cushioned. True to size. Good for longer faster runs. Upper and midsole are quite comfy, no sign of blisters. I wore if for a half marathon distance, and got one of my quicker times while not hurting after. Would definitely be in consideration for a half marathon!

Brooks Hyperion, Max 2In my opinion, these are the best shoe Brooks have made for running. I would recommend getting a pair and I would buy them again.

Very Solid ShoeI think this shoe is designed for faster pace runs, but I also wear them for long runs and they feel great! The midsole material is bouncy and cushioned. I wouldn’t say it’s super soft, but definitely feels nice.

Best daily trainer of the yearI am a heavy runner and after long runs, I can feel the soreness in my hips and knees the next day. This shoe has the protection I need and fun to run in. The full fell of the midsole helps displace the shock of my heel strikes. My favorite go to daily trainer followed by the Puma Deviate 3 and ASICS Magic Speed 4, in that order.

Great Workhorse OptionThis is a great shoe for really whatever you want to do with it. Sometimes when I am feeling sluggish I will plop this one for a double and the plate really helps with turnover on tired legs. I also have worn this for an 8 mile normal day and many workouts. From 4 to 15 miles this shoe has really worked for me. I've worn this shoe for 3 separate 15 mile hard, fast long runs and I felt just as recovered as I usually do wearing a carbon plated shoe. I will say- it it is a little firm and feels best on the roads. After about 30 miles you will feel this shoe soften up and it is really enjoyable.

Not quite rightI love the brooks Hyperion and was really hoping to love this shoe. It was a little more firm than expected and just didn’t give as much energy return and some others on the market.

Not much bounce, but solid for MCMPer usual, I was down to the wire deciding what shoes to wear for my marathon. Bought these on a whim. Felt good without much break in and got me through 26.2 on picky, sensitive feet. True to size. Maybe a little narrow in the toe box compared to other Brooks, but as someone hyper sensitive to pinky toe rubbing I wasn’t bothered.

Almost There! The upper on this shoe is the most comfortable I’ve tried all year. I also love the color. The foam at first is stiff. As I’ve put miles on the shoe it has softened up. Not as energy returning as other super trainers, but still a fast shoe. These have gone 13 miles with me without a problem. If the shoe was a little lighter and had a slightly softer foam I think it would be about perfect.

Great fitThe upper is perfectly designed, wraps around your foot and makes you feel comfortably locked into the shoe. The laces are a great design. The shoe feels firm and responsive, maybe a bit narrow based on my foot shape/size.

Just the perfect witnessFit is very good. Upper Material used is top class and the laces are locked ones. which gives it a perfect fit along the gusted tongue. It has enough on the midsole which feels soft enough and responsive.

Great trainerBeen long distance running for over 15 years ( marathons, triathlons). Much more stacked than the previous version but the fit around midfoot and forefoot works well for me. I’m right between regular and wide width in most shoes. Best for easy long runs. The laces and the tongue is much improved from previous version as well. I think it’s a well constructed shoe with a very versatile geometry to accommodate a wide variety of runners.

Finally a Brooks shoe I likeNot been a fan of Brooks shoes. Most of the recent offerings have been meh to me. This shoe changed that. The upper fit is fantastic and the midsole feels bouncy and cushioned. A very comfortable shoe to run in.

Will Go the DistanceThe fit is true to size. Super comfortable upper. The color way is great! The foam needs to be broken in. Somewhere around 50 miles these really started to work for me. Trained in and ran a brutal half in them. The Hot Springs Run Festival Summit 2 Summit half makes you work. This shoe held up to every aspect of that race. Climbed the hills, great protection coming down, and they helped me achieve my race goals. They have never bottomed out. Great speed. If the foam had a little more energy return it would be the most amazing shoe. I’m looking forward to the 3’s coming out in July.

Slight miss (firm and unstable)This was my first Brooks shoe. I typically enjoy firmer rides but man, this one was just too firm, even for me. The insole is glued but If you gently pull it out and observe it, it's nearly as thin as a piece of paper. Even after 120 miles in this shoe, it felt too firm for the long run (10-12 miles for me). I switched out the insole to a saucony PWRRUN+ insole; too big for the upper. Tried an old insole from my endorphin speed 3s- seems to fit and offer a tad more protection and softness. Tbh, anything is better than the Brooks insole (or lack-thereof) that comes in this shoe. The firmness was a downfall but the biggest downfall for me was surprisingly, stability. I noticed after about 50 miles, that the medial side of the shoe was significantly darkened from black pavement compared to the lateral. I filmed myself on a treadmill in multiple planes and noticed pretty severe overpronation, which I have never witnessed on my running films in any other shoe. This was followed by some new calf and thigh pain in the weeks to come after running consistently in the shoe. After I spent a week out of it, the pain left. I returned to the shoe 1-2 weeks later and the pain returned. My theory is this stems from the uneven sidewalls of the shoe. The medial sidewall is linear and slightly lower rising on the foot. The lateral sidewall has some asymmetric wedges that come up a little bit higher. Don't see this on many shoes. It's not all bad. This has to be one of the best uppers on any shoe I've tried since I started running in 2020, including the best laces you can offer. It also excels at any pace 5k to threshold because of the aggressive toe spring and firmness. The PEBAX plate is stiff; stiffer than nylon plates but less stiff than carbon plates. I do feel like this is probably a decent half marathon shoe for some but for the price, there are better options. Bottomline, Brooks has come a long way with foams but they still have some kinks to work through. They can make a great upper and a great outsole, but it's the part between that they have yet to really get down. Once they do, I am sure they were be a heavy hitter in the market. Hyperion max 3 looks promising. Hope they have an insole on that one.

The best upper evermost shoe companies have been slacking on the uppers and specifically the fit, a shoe should be an extensions of your foot it should feel natural to run in. Most of us runners think we have a major presence of foam, stiffness, stack height, and drop. Truthfully we don't and if we do it's the slightest difference imaginable. But all runners love a good upper, and that is the Brooks has been focusing on (where you can even see the toe design is rounded resembling more of a foot shape with a bit wider toe box on average) I have not tried or seen other people try brook shoes in 2024 without just loving the upper from the glycerin 21 to the Hyperion elite Md track spike brooks have made sure to stay true to their model of having fun and having a great fit.

Toooo FirmThis shoe is too firm. It also gave me blisters for any run I did over 5-6 miles in the great toe joint area. It feels narrow in the toebox... And I have narrow feet. I had high hopes for this shoe but don't care for it at all.
