Stack Height

  • Stack height refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of material below the forefoot, as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.

Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral Running Shoes

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stability Running Shoes

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

Product Highlights:

If you're a runner who wants to feel connected to the ground while also experiencing the responsiveness provided by super foams, then the HOKA Cielo Road was made for you.

The Cielo Road's midsole cushioning is entirely composed of lightweight PEBA foam, ensuring a comfortable yet propulsive running experience. Its Early stage Meta-Rocker technology enhances the shoe's speed, making it easier than ever to achieve faster running times. In keeping with the theme of being as fast as possible, we see strategic zonal rubber placement in the outsole to keep weight to a minimum.

The upper of the HOKA Cielo Road is designed to be super minimal yet highly effective. Made for your fastest efforts, this stripped down upper is as lightweight as possible while still providing a secure and comfortable fit. The air mesh material is thin and highly breathable, wrapping around your foot seamlessly. Meanwhile, TPU overlays add structure and protection to the upper, keeping you running fast and furious for your entire workout or race.

Overall, the HOKA Cielo Road is an excellent option for runners seeking a modernized racing flat that delivers an unparalleled experience for speed enthusiasts.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

Weight is measured per single shoe, including laces. Men's and unisex styles are based on a men's size 9, and women's styles are based on a women's size 8.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

Love itHave not worn outside and probably won’t ever. These are my favorite treadmill shoes for speed work, where the treadmill gives me all the cushion I need: Guessing it has to do with the low drop but although my knees pretty much always feel good while I’m running in any shoes, most of the time I pay for it later on in the day after speed runs , but not with these. Only issue I have is the left one rubs at the top of shoe on my heel. If I wear a bandaid there while running it’s not an issue, otherwise I end up rubbing through the skin. Probably my fault that I went up a half size, which I always do on shoes that don’t come in EE to help my wide feet and they seem a little longer other 10.5. Probably should have went with 10.

Who needs a plate?Big hunk of super critical foam. Very light on feet. Very breathable. You can see your socks through the shoe! True to size. Fun to run in.

Not a smooth strideI run in Bondi, Rincon, and Mafate with no problems. The Cielo has a different sole and makes the ball of my foot slap the ground.

Great workout shoeI'm not a big fan of carbon plates because I feel like they restrict my mechanics a bit. When I found this shoe, it looked like a perfect fit for me and my track workouts - the super foam would reduce the wear and tear on my legs, but without a plate! So far, the cielo road has definitely lived up to this. It's actually pretty stiff, and doesn't necessarily feel more flexible than my vaporfly 2s, but the ride is a lot less prescriptive. The vaporflies felt like they forced my foot to roll in a certain way, which I found a bit uncomfortable. The cielo road has a nice rocker, but it doesn't seem to force my foot to move in the way it wants. To further the comparison to the vaporfly, I'd say that the cielo road's PEBA foam feels a lot denser than ZoomX, and also firmer, but it still has a ton of pop. I know that this shoe is intended for 5k-half distances, but I'm a mid-distance runner and have found it to really come alive at 800m and mile race pace. Even though it doesn't have a plate, the shoe is stiff enough that it still has a lever-y feel. The outsole is grippy and feels great on a track. The rocker feels great even at these fast paces, and I normally hate rockered shoes! One important note is that it runs very long - I sized down by .5 and it fit perfectly

It's a 5 once it is modifiedI had to insert a heel liner in one shoe that gave me awful blisters. Once I cut the correct size and put in the liner, I have had no more blisters. If Hoka had only run the lining around the entire heel, I would not have needed to do this. I also needed to use my own laces as they were rather short. No that I have the shoe modified for my feet, I love them. I would purchase them again and next time will insert a small liner prior to use!!!

These shoes want you to run fastRight out of the gate these wanted me to run ~45s/mi faster on my warm-up, with which...not all parts of this 43yo bod were in agreement. Nevertheless, these shoes are pretty dope. Great pop to them, obviously very light and ventilated. I liked the short laces, had no problem with them (size 10.5). Looking forward to racing in these!

Nice run! Feedback to HokaThese shoes seem to be a winner for me - the right drop, the right feel, a nice bounce. I’d like to send to Hoka the need for 1) longer shoelaces 2) a bit more room for the big toe (curves into the toe bed and 3) bad blister in heel which I do not get in Topos and other running shoes. But with band-aids and my own laces, I will run in them and enjoy!
