Product Details:

HOKA’s Clifton 9 is a neutral everyday running shoe that boasts comfort and a low weight as its core principles. This iteration of the Clifton has been rejuvenated with an updated, lighter weight yet more responsive, CMEVA foam for a revitalized underfoot experience, and an additional 3mm of foam has been added in the stack height, enhancing cushioning without increasing the shoe's weight. The updated outsole design offers a high-level of durability and control on the road while a gusseted tongue offers a more secure fit and protects against rogue debris getting into the shoe. Finally, all these features are paired with HOKAs signature early-stage meta-rocker which delivers a smooth ride at any pace making the HOKA Clifton 9 a tried-and-true daily trainer that any runner or walker can enjoy.

What You'll Love:

  • Increased stack height offers a softer landing

Hoka Clifton 9 is PerfectAfter surgery of my heel bone spur removal and Achilles Tendon rupture repair the Hoka Bondi 8 was great! Further recovery I then transitioned to the Hoka Clifton 9 and it has been a perfect shoe to continue my recovery. Walking and building back ankle and calf muscles while providing great cushioned comfort and support!

Always loved the Clifton LineI can’t remember how many Clifton’s I’ve gone through but I know I can always expect quality and consistency. My go-to and excited to run the LA marathon in them next weekend.

Clifton 9 keeps getting narrowerI've loved the Clifton's, especially their beginning models. I wore them out! Since my first pair of Clifton 3-5 I've noticed the changes which have not been right for me: I liked the wider toe box and thinner tongue and smaller laces. Since these changes to narrower toe box, thicker tongue and bigger laces I've moved on to other models and also other brands. I wish HOKA would go back to the early models and colors. However, if you prefer a narrower shoe, then this is a good choice- still having max cushion and reliable cushion for road workouts

Low Volume FitI like the midsole and rocker profile but the fit was very narrow and uncomfortable.

Clifton 9By far and away the Best shoe for whatever your needs are. Casual, walking, running it checks all boxes. Living in the northeast where the weather is awful during these winter months i do most of my training on a treadmill and no issues what so ever. The offering of wide and 1/2 sizes make this the premier shoe in my eyes and I highly recommend.

Jack of all trades, master of mostA great option if you only want (or can afford) one shoe. It's one weak spot, unsurprisingly, is high end speed. I am averse to using supershoes regularly in workouts, so given that fact, here are my ratings: 9/10 for for easy/normal/long/uptempo runs. Comfortable for the long haul. 8/10 for tempo pace. Comparable to shoes made specifically for this kind of work. 7/10 for mile/5K pace. If you don't have a better option, it will still do well in a pinch 4/10 for sprint-800 pace. Might as well spike up, anyways.

As Good As It GetsLet me preface this review by stating I’m EXTREMELY picky about my running shoes. Fortunately, Running Warehouse has an EXCEPTIONAL customer service team!!! I’m an older fitness walker with severe knee osteoarthritis. I first tried the Bondi’s but disliked the weight and heel to toe drop. I exchanged them for the Clifton 9’s and I believe these are the right balance I’ve been looking for — as they are lightweight and the heel to toe drop is minimal. They are very comfortable and look fantastic. I wear a size 12 and I’m a little concerned about a slight tug midsole but they are loosing up a bit about 20 miles. Trust me, I’ve tried ASICS, On Cloud, Saucony and Brooks and NOTHING compares to the cushioning of Hoka. Highly recommended and once again — RW is nothing short of SUPERIOR!!!

Love the 2e Wide optionI longed for the day Hoka would make a wider option. I always tore through D wide hokas from the side. For the price they wouldn’t last me very long. With the 2e wide option I’m finally getting my money’s worth. More comfort, more miles. Thank you.

9 series better than the 8I’ve been a HOKA Clifton buyer for years, ever since their first. Some years were better than others and I’m glad they are keeping this one light. The toe box is too narrow, I like more toe room and the thinner tongue. However, the max cushioning is great and my go to for longer walks. Running not much of an option since I turned 50. This shoe gives me enough cushion to support the knees. I’m missing the fun bright colors for women that are offered to men by HOKA. so I went to my standard black, white, rose gold. Please bring back more colorful options such as fuchsia, salmon, and brigh blues with contrasting colors such as yellow, tangerine, purple. Also, more toe box room - that’s a common request, or offer wide options for women

Comfortable and supportiveI'm not a super serious runner (typically 3-4 times a week anywhere from 3-7 miles a run) but I'm currently training for a marathon. This offers great support for me and I've noticed less pain in my feet and knees compared to other shoes I've worn. To be fair I used to shop for best deal on running shoes above what shoe may help me the most.

A must gift for RunnersI am a runner. I have raised three men who are runners. The staple running shoe is a staple as a Christmas gift. The only nuance is the model. Often with shoes, when the model changes, so does the quality, comfort, and response. However, that is t the case with Hoka. They are the most consistent shoe I’ve ever purchased. The size is always true to the foot, the comfort always seems to get better. The stability is constantly improving and the overall support and strengths of the shoe see solid. Hoka are the first items on the list. They are the first stop and purchase. I highly recommend Clifton Hoka for beginning, intermediate and advanced runners. They cushion the impact of repetitive pounding. Running warehouse has been a 10/10 for product availability as well as shipping and arrival.

Not my styleI had heard really good reviews on Hoka so I decided to try. My go to has always been Saucony. While the construction and materials seemed good, the high heel to toe drop was excessive. Felt like I was wearing heels. Had to return unfortunately because running in them felt unstable and clumsy.

HOKA Clifton 9 - All around great comfortI have been wearing Clifton since they first came out, each year they get better and more comfortable. I have slowed down on my running, but walk in the Clifton 's 5 miles daily and they give me great comfort right from day one. I have to say, they do feel a bit softer ride than the Clifton 8's and I am seeing more wear sooner than I did in the Clifton 8's. Overall, I would recommend these for everyday runs/walks

Hoka's are the bestI have a wide foot and a really high arch. I am extremely difficult to fit in shoes but these shoes are amazing. I have a few pairs, one for running and another for work. I'm a nurse, I'm on my feet all day and these shoes are handling it well, alleviating foot pain and lasting longer than most shoes. They are worth the money. I would buy them again.

Nursing Student ReviewI purchased the Hoka Clifton 9 in white. I am in my 3rd year of nursing school and spend long hours on my feet in clinicals. For this purpose, here is my review. For nurses, the Hoka Clifton 9 is a great option if you’re looking for comfort, lightweight design, and cushioning to reduce foot fatigue during long shifts. While it may not be a specialized slip-resistant shoe, it performs well in most areas critical for healthcare workers. Despite its ample cushioning, the Clifton 9 remains lightweight. This can help reduce foot fatigue over extended periods, which is crucial during long hospital shifts. I believe this shoe is a solid choice for nurses, particularly those who are on their feet for long shifts. While I am not currently running, I did run xc and track and if I had the opportunity to have these shoes during that time, I know they would’ve been great for running as well.

I actually starting doing a light jog with my walks and hoping to do a 5K soon. I planned to buy all my shoes now at Running Warehouse.

HAPPY FEETI started HOKA with Clifton 5 as I'm only a walker due to health issues. I've tried other styles of Hoka and always come back to Clifton. The significant changes to 9 are fantastic with the wider toe box and thicker, foamier bottoms. Removing the second strap inside the shoe was a major win, no more rubbing! Needs of senior walkers and runners, in my opinion, are met by HOKA, thank you. My hammer toes and arthritic feet are HAPPY with HOKA.

Back to what worksI'd gotten away from the Clifton line for a bit - it just didn't have the same feel and responsiveness as earlier models. Good Shoe But...It's a good running shoe, but a little bit pricey. Love the colors, but would like to have a splash of red. The main thing I dislike about this shoe is the bulky "elf/shoehorn" treatment of the heel tab. It's unnecessary, adds weight and looks awful. I prefer the heel tab style of the previous generations Clifton 7/8. Also, I would like to have a more durable heel as these tend to wear out rather quickly.

Why the hard pieces in the tongue?I'm a long time Clifton wearer. All the way back to the 1s. This version feels pretty good, but there are some major differences between the 8s and the 9s. Namely the tongue. The 8s tongue is all one piece of mesh on top. The 9 has three different materials and has a harder feel to the edges. This presses into my ankle. Yuck. Might have to cut it out which is not ideal.. cutting a new pair of shoes.. Why change something unnecessarily? (FYI.. The shoe is also a bit wider than past versions.)

Comfort for Tired Old FeetAs a 73-year-old woman, with severe RA and OA, finding comfortable shoes for walking is not easy. This is my second pair of Hoka shoes and by far the most supportive. Foot problems have resulted in my shoe size increasing from a women's 9 medium to a men's size 9 wide. I find the men's wide to be the best fit. For someone on a limited income, the price is a stretch but quality and comfort usually comes with a higher price tag. I've recommended these shoes to others, even 20-year-olds with foot issues.

Took a While to Break inI had very high hopes that these would be a comfortable shoe right out of the box. It was my first time buying Hoka and I was ready to be blown away by the softness. However, these took about three weeks to break in, and I did not look forward to lacing them up. Around the three week mark, I noticed they weren’t uncomfortable anymore and were not as hard. I don’t mind running in them now for anything under 8 miles, but I don’t think I would wear these on any double-digit runs. These shoes are fine, but not what I was looking for.

Excellent! This was my first Hoka in years, and I'm impressed. I use it for easy days and describe it as a “soft” daily trainer. As previously noted, the breathability isn't excellent, and it does get hot, but that's a tradeoff I'm happy to make, given the superb comfort. It’s also a tremendous nonplate shoe to plug into my rotation of mostly plated shoes. Well done Hoka!

Hola Clifton - Walking on a CloudI have been running since I was 12 years old and did my first marathon at 13. I cried the last 4 miles because my feet hurt so bad due to the ill fitting, no support shoe I wore back in the day. 53 years later, the technology of shoes especially Hoka Clifton has inspired me to run my 10th and most likely final marathon. The Hoka shoe keeps my feet, legs and lower back from injury and any after workout pain. Our family of runners have worn Hokas for at least 5 years. Thanks to the manufacturers of Hoka for making such a quality shoe.

Declined Quality - CliftonsThe last shoe I purchased was the exact same brand and model. I read rumors of the worsened quality, but I hoped for the best. I am even quite sure they were Clifton 9's, but they were blue. Those shoes made it 298 miles (and, I don't run faster than 7:45 - 8:30 mile pace on roads). These shoes felt worn the minute I put them on. I now have foot and joint pains that I never had, and I have no cause other than the change in shoes. Misleadingly, they appear to offer stability, but the sacrifice in weight may not have been worth it. I may need to shift to a Mach 6 or something that they deem more stable... I'm just very confused: why does one shoe, allegedly the same model, feels so vastly different from the other? Hoka, I think it's okay to either make a new model, or keep the shoe the same. I do worry that all running shoes are falling into the planned obsolescence hole. Any ideas of brands that don't?

Good shoeRoomy but true to size. Very cushiony as advertised, but the overall control and balance of the shoe isn't what I expected. I am a fan of the Speedgoat and was hoping I'd have a similar fit. Nevertheless, this is a very comfortable shoe. Great for training on even terrain and rail trails and casual wear.

Clifton 9I’ve been wearing Clifton’s since the first iteration. My favorites prior to the 9s were probably the 3s. I had issues with rubbing in the arch for several models, but I really love these 9s! I’m 6’4” 195lbs, so I appreciate the cushioning on my long runs. I’ll definitely be ordering another pair or 3.

Hoka Clifton 9I ran about 25 miles in them for break in, prior to the Ogden Half Marathon, the shoes were very comfortable and stable, no issues at all during or after race, I’ve ran in Hoka Clifton’s for several years now and love them so I am a little bias. I see no reason to switch when they work so well for me from racing to daily training runs.

Great shoe for senior walkingI'm a 71 year old, overweight male who walks an average of 3 miles (mix of treadmill, street & mall) and easily gets in 11k steps daily. Last year I wore the Clifton 8 and overall was pretty happy with them. The Clifton 9 is an improvement for me. I feel more connected to the ground when walking, but still with plenty of cushioning & comfort. (The 8's were a bit too 'squishy' for me.) I definitely prefer the new design of the Clifton 9. These Hoka's sizing is exactly what I usually wear in other shoes, sandals, etc. Price at Running Warehouse is competitive and shipping is fast. Customer service reps (phone) always helpful, knowledgeable & pleasant.

Okay shoeThe cushioning of the Clifton 9 is a little odd. It feels soft but not squishy. It's not very responsive though. My heart rate is higher and my perceived effort is higher even at easy paces. I like the rocker design. It's also a comfortable shoe. I'm normally a standard width but I went true to size but 2E width. I bought this to be an easy day/recovery shoe but I'm undecided if it'll work for me or not.

Another great CliftonMy favorite Cliftons, in order: 7, 9, 6, 8, 5. Suffice to say, and I've got 300+ miles on them, I really like these shoes. Slightly higher stack than previous versions which I wasn't thrilled about, but for general miles and easy days, these shoes have been a workhorse for me, getting used 2-3 times / week. I expect to get 500+ miles out of them and have overall really enjoyed them.

Clifton 9I have enjoyed the Clifton 9's as a every road run shoe. I have logged about 120 miles on my pair so far and love the cushion and response. Great soft feel for the long runs and enough response to do Tempo runs in. My only concern would be how long the outsole is going to last, the areas without rubber have already taken some damage.

I had been running in the Clifton 8’s for a while (3 pairs, about 1500 miles between them). These new ones felt stiff for the first 20 miles or so but then they either broke in or I just got used to them and they feel fantastic now. I typically run on asphalt or hard packed beach sand at low tide. Solid shoe that I would buy again no problem.

Depends on the wearHaving bounced around between multiple brands searching for a new trainer after both Adidas and Mizuno did unspeakable things to the Bostons and Wave Riders, I experimented with joining the growing camp of runners who have enjoyed success with the Hoka One One Cliftons. For me, the shoe is a tale of two mileages, one of which being the first 100-200mi, and the other being everything else. When I first wore the shoe I was surprised by how little of the “platform” look was actually noticeable. Make no mistake, there is a lot of shoe there, but it didn’t feel like it. Similarly the 5mm offset was a bit less than I was used to, but it certainly didn’t feel like it. I still got the sense of being rocked forward on my toes, and although it lacked the snap of my typical workout shoes, it also wasn’t the marshmallow I was expecting. Over time however, this was the big change for me. While I initially would have quantified them as “comfortably firm”, as they wear in, I found them to grow softer and softer, to the point where it felt like more of an impediment than a boost. Similarly, I also felt as though I was sitting “deep” in the shoe, with a significant amount of heel collar grasping my ankle. While I enjoyed the shoe at first and would certainly consider them on short runs during double sessions, they’re not going to be a shoe I reach for particularly often.

Great everyday road shoeI love the fit and feel of the Clifton for an everyday shoe. I wear them on road, bike trail and flat dirt. The fit is very similar to the Speedgoat, so if that's your trail shoe and you need a road shoe, it's a no-brainer. I like the width in the toebox on the wide version. I run on average 50 miles per week so I'm getting a lot of time in these shoes. Only One ComplaintI have been wearing Cliftons for the last 6 cycles of running shoes. I always order wide even though I don’t have wide feet…If I don’t, I get a lot of rubbing on the inside of my big toe and ball of foot. My only complaint is how fast the outsole wears down. On the ball of the foot, I will wear thru the outsole rubber in 250 miles.

always a good shoeI have run in every iteration of the Clifton. This one is a good as the last and the one before that.. The upper changes are minimal, more just tweaks to the material and seam locations, IMO. The key piece, that Clifton underfoot feel, remains as always. I use these for tempo runs, road intervals and the occasional uptempo long run. I get close to 300 miles on them before noticeable cushion degradation. To be fair, I run in Hoka's exclusively, as they just seem to work for me.

Clifton 9This is the first Clifton that I’ve put on and it didn’t feel great. I’m not sure if it’s the tongue of the shoe or around the top eye holes that are thicker that makes it a bit uncomfortable. I have to adjust quite a bit before and during my wear time. I also don’t love the little lighter black accents on my black shoe. I have been so pleased with past hoka Clifton’s. This just didn’t earn top marks in comfort or esthetics. Please go back to your original simplistic comfort.

Hoka Clifton 9First running shoe I've ever put on that felt that soft, comfortable, and perfectly fit to my foot the very first time I put them on. Very comfortable to walk in, by the way. But, I also use these for street runs because they are so well cushioned and padded. Being as cushioned as they are I was pleasantly surprised to find some structure & stability too. After just a few runs now, my hip & knees can definitely tell a difference! I simply don't feel the pain when done anymore - amazing. The Brooks GTS I run in on the trails are great shoes - but, they can't compare to the comfort of the Hoka's on street runs. Even though this is just my first pair of Hoka's, I would highly recommend them - I'm very impressed.

Hoka Clifton 9Big improvement over the Clifton 8, which rubbed and bruised my inner heel. Now the Clifton is nearly perfect, the sole could wear longer, but I guess you have to expect to give up durability to get all that cushioning. Great shoe!

No longer a Hoka fan.I have been wearing Cliftons since the 6 model and loved them. The last few updates have been awful. The 8's began the changes. They started streamlining so much that I had to go up a half size and to a wide, which I have very skinny feet with no volume, which seemed to help. Now with the 9's I was able to go back to a B width but the upper material is so flimsy that I can pinch it. There is no support in it. On the sides where the upper meets the foam is now indented which leaves even less support and I am having arch pain. I am ready to try other brands.

Clifton 9Always wore Clifton 8. They are no longer available so ordered the Clifton 9. They’ve done something to the toe box design and they don’t fit right anymore. Very disappointed. I am not sure what I will move to, but it won’t be the Clifton 9.

Cliftons are not cushyBecause my feet are so orthopdeically-imparied (and old), I require high levels of cushion. I had Cliftons in the past and liked them. However, this time they did not give me an immediate sense of "ah." I decided to return them and go with the Bondi 8 in wide.

Excellent cushioning but toe box is crampedI’ve owned the previous versions of the Clifton and they have been comfortable and durable. I use them as a walking shoe and not running. The Clifton 9 has great cushioning but the toe box is a little cramped compared to the older versions. After wearing them a while they have improved. I would give them 5 stars except for the smaller toe box.

Great cushionI love the Cliftons. The Clifton 9 is a bit more on the "clunky" side as the sole up on the toe base seems wider. I think my favorite is the Clifton 8 because they don't appear to be as wide in the sole. I LOVE the cushion in the Clifton and am very pleased with how the cushion has stayed true to the Clifton through all the other changes.

The Familiar CliftonFeels a lot like the Clifton 8. I have them in a rotation currently with a pair of Clifton 8s and I can't really tell the difference. That's not a bad thing, the 8 is a great shoe too. Not surprisingly, this is a great shoe for easy runs, especially longer ones. It can feel a little unstable if you try to hit the gym for a lift after your run. This shouldn't surprise anyone based on the stack height and the amount of cushion. At the end of the day, it's an excellent running shoe that should be used for running (or walking if you're into that). If you're looking for a shoe to take out on your longer, easy cruising runs this is a great candidate.

I used to have achillies problems, but they have since gone away when I started wearing HOKAs. Just wish prices of running shoes wasn't so high. Especially when I replace them every few months and usually try and have two on hand at a time.

Immediately comfortableI purchased these shoes after a recommendation from an avid running friend. I used to be an avid runner but am just getting back into it and wanted a shoe that provided a lot of support while running. Especially since I'm in the process of losing weight and running can be hard on your joints. These shoes felt comfortable from the first step. They have a wide toe box for added comfort. I'm not running fast, but felt like I was gliding through my run because of the spring in these shoes. Highly recommend!!

Good long run shoeI wear the Clifton when I am doing 10+ mile runs. They are soft and springy enough to make it so my feet and legs aren’t killing after a long run day. I do notice a difference in fit slightly between the colors, this is my third pair. I run average 50 miles a week. I will buy them again. I don’t use them for races because they aren’t as snappy as I like for speed.

HokasThese shoes took longer than usual to break in. Like all the Hokas I've tried (Clifton 8, Rincon), they have a nice cushion, and I enjoy them for longer runs. They hit my foot and ankle in a couple of difficult places, I think because they seem to be taller than some of the other ones I've worn. It took awhile for them to be comfortable in the front, as I have a wider foot, and the first few times I wore these I was in a lot of pain and even tore holes in the toe of one of my socks. I also got a pretty big blister on my left big toe. After adjusting the laces several times and running in them for a couple of weeks, they're working well, but they still hit my right foot in an awkward spot due to the height of the mouth of the shoe. For the amount that I paid for them, I find them disappointing, but this is unusual for the brand, as I haven't had this issue in the past.

Fit is good- the durability is not so greatI like the Clifton 9. They protect my feet, and the heel to toe transition is smooth and almost effortless. I mean my legs don’t have to struggle and strain to move the shoe along (unlike the Altra Torin and Topo Phantom where every step is a chore). The outsole rubber has worn down quickly on outside heel strike area. Just over 100 miles, the rubber pealed back completely on the left. I tried gluing it back and it would only come lose during the run. Since it was flapping against the ground, I cut it off. I’ve run about 50 miles on the exposed rubber and I think I can go another 50 before it wears down enough to affect my stride. I might get more miles than that. The fit of the Clifton 9 is what I like most. I no longer have to wear a wide and use the runners loop to lock down the heel. The toe box is wide enough for me to wear the D width and I tie them without the loop. It’s a very comfortable shoe. I’m not a fan of the additional 3 mm of midsole foam. It makes them a tad stiffer and less stable than the Clifton 8 which had 37 mm -32 mm of midsole. The additional 3 mm may be making my knees a little sore. I did not have his issue with the Clifton 8. The additional stack height just seems unnecessary when there is the Bondi. My bottom line is that I will likely buy and pair of the Clifton 9’s and hope the peeling rubber was a fluke and my knees adjust to the additional 3 mm of stack height.

Something changed for the worse with these? This is my third pair of Cliftons. I had 40 miles on these before wearing them for IRONMAN Lake Placid (2023). Part way through the marathon, I felt pressure on toe nails of both my big toes. Did not pay attention to it. After the race had blood blisters under both toe nails. This has never happened to me before. Been running in Nike, Asics, and Altra, both road and trail. This marathon was not my first marathon or my first long course. After two weeks off of running to let toes come back to normal. I wore all three pair of Cliftons on consecutive runs. This Clifton 9 is the only one that is making my toes hurt. IDK if it's just this pair and there is something unusual about the toe box...maybe too little material in uppers?

Walking in PillowsI’m 68 years old and I walk (around the track) 3 - 4 miles each day. I heard about HOKA’S through a friend. Without a doubt, this is the most comfortable sneaker I’ve ever worn on my feet. It’s like “walking on air”. I chose the Clifton 9 model with a wide width. I currently have 6 different colors, one more pair and I’ll have one for every day of the week. When I’m wearing them, people often ask “are they light (as in weight), stable, comfortable, etc.” I tell them this sneaker “checks all the boxes”

Only good for neutral runnersHave had good results using neutral shoes even being an overpronator. After 90 miles my left shoe has compressed severely on the inside. I understand it's not recommended for overpronators. The comfort level is good for a neutral runner and it's a good daily trainer shoe.

Good TrainerI've been running exclusively with Brooks and Asics since 2005. Given all the rave reviews of the Hoka's (including my own mother) I thought I would try the Clifton's out. There is definitely a lot of cushioning in this shoe. While it is a good daily trainer, I found it a bit heavy for my liking. The rocking back and fourth was really strange to get used to as well. This may work for a lot of other runners, but I'll be switching back to Asics.

Better than the Clifton 8These shoes are much better for what Im looking for than the Clifton 8, but I still think this is where I part ways with the Cliftons. In truth, the Clifton 8 was going to be my last go at the Cliftons but I heard a lot about improvements in 9 so, I said one more time. In truth, it is better all the way around, the fit, energy return, the plush feel, all good things. Pro's: - Nice plush ride with some energy return. - Upper fits very nicely. - Fits the role of a decent daily trainor very well. - Good looking shoe. - This version is definately the best looking Clifton version for me so far. Con's: - The Cliftons line has just been to volitile for me. From one year to the next, it is either very average, really good, or just plain awful. - 5mm Drop - I think that this shoe is much better at the 4mm drop. But this is very personal preference. All in all, part of my rating is very much influenced by the entire Clifton experience I have had since version 1. There have been several versions I did not try, but still tried 5 of the nine version so far. If anything, before buying any Clifton, if it is possible, try a pair on if they are available for you locally. That has been one of my frustrations, the Clifton is somewhat unique for me in that the reviews either way have not reflected my personal experience and from version to version I can go from really liking them to just regretting buying them.

So good I bought three pair already and thinking about stocking up more. Not only are they great for my daily runs they were perfect walking around Italy the past 7 days. Comfortable trainerI run about 40mi per week and the Clifton 8 was my go-to. The 9 version has a wider toe box (the Clifton 8 was so narrow that I used to order a men's wide), but the underfoot cushioning is stiffer than the Clifton 8. I have a Mortons neuroma that is sensitive to change in cushion level. The upper is also thicker and stiffer. This provides more stability to the shoe, but also rubs the sides of the forefoot more. Overall, it is a great shoe if you're looking for a comfortable trainer or an every-day shoe.

Unfortunately the Clifton 9’s are nowhere near as comfortable. The footbed on the ball of my foot feels like I’m walking directly on the pavement. Version 2-8 were just not as good from a cushion and fit perspective and never got back to the near perfection of the original. This model is the first hoka that put a smile on my face in a long time! Although a bit bulkier than previous models this shoe has some of the magic back in the cushioning department that put hoka on the map. This ride is plush without being too soft and the shoe transition nicely with each slide. The toe box is perfect and not constricting. They are also light and do not feel bulky. I wear a 11.5 in almost everything and the 11.5 fit perfectly. I’m liking this shoe so much I may stock up in fear of the next update. HOKA - PLEASE DONT CHANGE THIS SHOE.

FinallyBeen a Hoka user of all versions since the beginning. Also have tried about everything else as well as of late. For me, this is the best Hoka Clifton and perhaps the best road shoe I’ve ever worn. For me. This version is slightly wider, softer, breathier. Finally a version I can stock up on before they change it for the worse.

Hoka rejuvenatedI have been wearing hoka since they were a small brand. I loved the meta rocker and it seems the past few models have lacked that original hoka rocker. The clifton was lack luster for yests. It's back! The cushioning is soft but yet responsive. It was great right out of the box. The upper hugs my foot and I love the colors that are offered. I might my this my go to running shoe again. Great job Hoka!

Trying to come back to Clifton 9, it's a NO!Just a little history for my opinion. I jumped on the Clifton train on the versions 1 and 2. They lost me after that, but I did go for the Redux version did a couple years back. After living in Europe and running cobbles my in my version 2 Cliftons I needed a new pair of shoes. I bought the Nike Invincible 1. First time running in Nikes in 20 years. LOVE them! So the Invincible 3 came out and had a decent amount of negative reviews compared to the early version I loved. So I decided to buy the Clifton 9. One short run and I knew I was done with Cliftons for good this time. I walked around them and they felt great.....a great walking shoe! Soon as I started my run I knew compared to my Nike Invincible 1 that there was not enough cushion for my liking. Plus they were running much larger than before. I had to crank down the laces to secure my foot in this shoe and that is with a custom footbed that is pretty high profile and takes up a lot of space. I quickly ran down to the Nike store to try the Invicible 3 to see why the reviews were so bad for this latest version. Compared it to the Clifton 9 I realized that I should have stuck with the Nike as it might not be like the versions 1/2, but the version 3 is so much better than the Hoka Clifton 9. I am a heal striker and run between 4-7 miles 3x a week. In my 50s I want no injuries as I run, so I have sent back the Clifton ( thanks RW for your return policy!!!) as will exchange them for the Nike Invincible 3!!
