Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral Running Shoes

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stability Running Shoes

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

Hoka SkyflowGreat shoe! My only complaint is the outsole tends to wear fast. My favorite shoe to run in right now!

Great shoe, but just too heavy for me.I purchased this shoe for my long runs. Being a marathon runner, I spend a lot of time doing long slow runs. I liked ALMOST everything about the Hoka Skyflow... great padding, nice look, very comfortable. Unfortunately, I found the weight of 8.9 oz to be noticeable and just too much for me, as I am used to the Saucony Speed which is 7.4 oz. It doesn't seem like much of a weight difference, but I could feel it. If they could shave the weight down a bit and still maintain even 3/4 of the padding, it would be a winner!

Excellent Daily - Should get more attention300 miles on these, and still feel great. When I first ran in these after the Topo Atmos, I was very pleasantly surprised at the rebound that I hadn't felt from the Atmos. These are a definite "middle" between a plush recovery, and a speedier shoe like the Mach 6 or Rebel v4. They feel supportive and stable without wallowing, and they have some spring and bounce. The toebox was a bit snug on one side, but I found a "shoe-stretcher" helped with that. Wishlist; that they would be lighter. Regardless, I really like them, and plan on at least another hundred or more miles. No apparent wear anywhere, except a bit on the heel. I run midfoot. I have the Noosa Tri 16 for faster sessions, but these work for daily/recovery. I do think they deserve more attention.

Cushioned Road MilesExactly what I was hoping for, which was a well cushioned road shoe for the majority of my easy runs and general long runs. Fit true to size for me with a comfortably snug midfoot- I have an average width foot. This shoe rounds out my running needs nicely as I complement it with the Saucony Endorphin Speeds for my tempo/faster sessions or up paced long runs. I’m surprised I haven’t heard more buzz around this shoe.

great shoe. too longThis one disappears on foot. Breaks in around 20-30 miles. Using it for easy miles and it holds up great during strides too. I have a narrow foot so I almost love the fit it just seems quite a bit longer than a usual 9.5.

Cushy and lightBought them for my wife She uses them for recovery runs. Even though they are only 4 oz lighter than the Bondis, it feels a lot lighter. Definitely not for speed work, but very comfortable for longer stuff.

great shoe weird fit.I've been loving them for my easy pace/zone 2 runs but also feel great at faster paces. Excellent for my long runs. Legs have been feeling really fresh. Only issue is how long they are. I'm a 9.5 in every Hoka I have tried. The width on the Skyflow feels great for my narrow feet but these feel like a good half size longer if not more. I hope they address this in the Skyflow 2. For my next pair I may try a 9.

SkyflowI’ve been looking for a replacement for my Hoka Challengers since the changes made to the Challenger 7 did not work for me. The Skyflow is the best I’ve been able to find and are working out so far.

ExcellentAfter trying some other shoes for daily/recovery, I now have 130 miles in the Skyflow, and am quite happy with them. I really like the rocker on this for midfoot landings. Cushioned and supportive without being clunky for my gait. Standard toebox, which I have, is a tad too snug, but not enough to trade for wide. The outsole is holding up great so far. It seems to be a bit slippery, depending on the surface, and it's a little heavier than I'd like. For me, the small negatives don't outweigh the overall fit and ride of these.

ExcellentThese are the Hokas that I wish I had bought the first time. I had the Clifton previously, and it was just too soft and squishy to feel appropriate for running. The Skyflow, in contrast, is much more responsive. It’s still a Hoka though, and works well for my feet. I went with a wide version and it’s better than the Clifton regular, but still a bit narrower than most wide shoes. My only gripe is that they’re a bit heavy, but I use them for training and that’s not such a bad thing. I have raced in them and didn’t feel like it was an issue.

Love My Hoka SkyflowsMy new Hoka Skyflows are great for my long walks. The cushioning and springiness are perfect and make walking on concrete sidewalks so smooth and comfortable. I am thrilled with them . It would be nice if the color selection expanded.

Honest reviewI purchased this shoes. Body weight 200lb High 5'8" Shoe size 9.5 The shoes is comfortable ok but no more comfortable than the cliftons. It is a light shoe. I am not a runner I only used them for walking. I have noticed that the shoe is at least 1/2 size bigger. I have used the shoe during fall while temperatures are going down and my keep are warm wearing this shoe. Probably wouldn't recommend using it is summer IF your feet and hands normally are warm. If you are someone who complaints about having cold feet then I consider it is fine to use this shoe anytime. All things considered the shoe should be in the category of $100-$120.

Slyflow reviewDefinitely more of a rigid shoe than I expected. Good for daily runs, long runs, and tempo work. I do prefer my rincons more as a recovery shoe due to the cushion, so if you are looking for a 1 and done shoe, I would lean towards those.

Comfy, bouncy daily trainerVery comfortable upper with a plush step-in feel. Lots of cushion, but not squishy. Significantly firmer than NB 1080v13 and Asics Nimbus 25 (didn't try the 26). The ride feels somewhat similar to the Novablast 4, which these are replacing for me, but nimbler, bouncier, and more fun. Loving these so far.

Very comfortableI purchased this show a little over a month ago and it has performed as expected. It is very comfortable and light weight. My only complaint would that it is a bit snug, but I am hoping for it stretch a bit over time. Other than that I would recommend this shoe to others.

Sturdy but ClunkyIn my opinion, the new Hoka Skyfllow shoes are well designed and sturdy. They provide more than adequate cushioning and arch support which, as someone who previously suffered from plantar fasciitis, I appreciate. However, they were not the right shoe for me because I found them to be heavy and clunky. There was a dull thud sound with every step I took, and Ifelt like a Clydesdale running in them. If you're looking for a well-built shoe and are used to the bulk of Hokas, then this might be the right shoe for you. I have come to learn that I need a supportive but lighter shoe.

Comfortable stylish daily runnerThe Hoka Skyflow has been a very pleasant surprise. It has superb cushioning that stands up with heavy use. You never feel that your foot is sinking into the cushioning. It is very comfortable with great rolling (rocker) action that makes you feel that you don't have shoes on at all! I highly recommend the Skyflow!

Hoka skyfkowThe shoe wasn’t a great match for my wide feet. Felt uncomfortable with initial step in and really couldn’t get past the feel. Hoka uppers are usually very comfortable.

Better than Bondi!I work in the medical field and I was first introduced to HOKA via some coworkers. I love the Bondi for work, but for running, they are too clunky. I loved the Clifton but it felt too soft underfoot. This is a good mix of both! The shoe fits a bit narrow but makes up for it when running. I've used it on two runs and I want to run more. I have the Skyward X and the Mach 6, and its bouncy like the Mach's and I love the geometry of the rocker, really helps propel you into the next step. Love this shoe and will buy more if more color options are released in wide!
