Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral Running Shoes

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stability Running Shoes

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

Product Details:

The HOKA Skyward X is a super trainer that utilizes lightweight and responsive superfoams and a carbon fiber plate to deliver a plush yet efficient ride to your daily runs.

Featuring a large amount of PEBA foam underfoot, the Skyward X feels smooth and lively at a wide range of paces and distances. Meanwhile, the supercritical EVA frame provides an inherently stable geometry, and the curved carbon fiber plate acts like a suspension system by compressing and springing back with every step for a seamless transition into the gait cycle.

To help maximize durability, the outsole is made of a high-abrasion rubber that ensures longevity and confidence on any surface. The HOKA Skyward X is finished off with a flat knit upper made of recycled polyester for a lightweight and sustainable design. Complemented by a molded heel counter and ghilly lacing system, the upper offers a comfortable midfoot lockdown creating the perfect blend of comfort and performance.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Love it!I love my Hoka Skyward X! I especially appreciate the Max cushion, as I enjoy long endurance runs. I run on a Gravel trail so that I may look for a Hoka trail shoe and use my Hoka Skywards for road/treadmill!

Solid Long Run Cruiser with a Bit of PepI avoided buying these for quite a while because I didn’t see the need for them with the running I was doing. However, I recently embarked on marathon training, and they have been great for long runs that mix in a bit of marathon-paced miles. I rate them just at 4-stars because I don’t think they are super versatile beyond these types of runs though.

Really pleased - great for easy runs . . .I love these shoes and they compliment a pair of ASICS Nova Blast 5's I also run in. The Skyward X is fun and comfortable. I'm not a fast runner but they help me remain engaged and tuned up for my upcoming 70.3 triathlon. I highly recommend and RW is a fantastic retailer!

Nice shoeThis shoe was great. It was very springy and felt like you could run faster. Great for speed work and race day. Unfortunately, they are a little tight in the forefoot and it was not a perfect fit for me. If you have wide feet, this shoe will not work for you.

Hoka Skyward X – Game Changer for My RunsI started running a year ago and chose the New Balance 1080 after extensive research ( I was 220 Lbs then) to accommodate my osteoarthritis in my left knee. The cushioning and support were great, but as I lost weight (180Lbs now) and gained endurance, I was ready for something more exciting. That’s when I discovered the Hoka Skyward X, and it has been everything I could have asked for! Unmatched Cushioning & Comfort: The soft yet supportive midsole absorbs impact beautifully, keeping my knee comfortable without feeling mushy. Energy Return & Responsiveness: The dual-density midsole and carbon-fiber plate create a noticeable propulsion, making each stride feel effortless—like the shoe is running for me! Perfect for Daily & Long Runs: I clock in 5–6 miles every morning and 10 miles on Saturdays, and these shoes handle the miles with consistent comfort and bounce. Pure Running Fun: Beyond performance, the Skyward X makes running exciting—something I never thought I’d say when I first started. The sensation of floating while still getting that responsive push forward is unmatched. Final Verdict: If you're looking for maximum cushioning with a fun, bouncy ride, the Hoka Skyward X is a fantastic choice. It has transformed my runs, and I’m loving every mile in them!

Loved this after trying 25 different shoes!!I am 44 years old around 200lbs. I have step arthritis and back pain issues. I wanted to find a shoe which I can run comfortably in. I started running on treadmill and frankly any good shoe will work on treadmill. When I started running on road I was very u comfortable. That’s when I started buying and trying different shoes. Thanks to the shoe brands and generous return policy I have tried almost all high cushioned comfortable cushioned shoes. First I found New Balance Fresh foam 1080x. That was my favorite for a long time but felt boring and not very fun on long rides. After trying a lot of shoes I found this shoe. Didn’t like it initially and then I took it for a 5k run and wow the shoe just came alive for me. It’s so bouncy , cushiony, and everything that I would have liked in a shoe. Last week I took it on a 10k and it was a charm. After coming home my legs were still very fresh. Looking forward to going distance with this shoe and hopefully run a full marathon if it sometime soon.

Wonderful long run shoeIt's exactly what you'd expect from a high cushioning long run shoe. Saves your legs and keeps you going. As a 50+ year old first time marathoner, this shoe is exactly what I need to keep training. It's not for those fast paced technical days but it handles easy and long runs like a charm.

High Quality Maximalist Running ShoesThe Skyward X is a very comfortable and very high quality shoe. Very easy to run at a slow pace and very easy to really pick up the pace even to threshold pace. Very good shoe for training for any race of any duration, more ideally suited for the 10k to Marathon distances. It is worth the money to have the Skyward X in your shoe running rotation, as you will be as pleased as I am with these shoes!!

Great Long Run ShoeIt took me a bit to start enjoying this shoe. First few runs with these made my feet hurt, and I got blisters on the inside of my arches, even with blister resistant socks. I was about to return them. Gave it a couple more runs and after they broke in they’ve been fantastic. No more foot pain, and I tape my arches to prevent blisters. They’re on the heavier side, but my legs aren’t trashed after long runs. I find myself running further and faster than what my plan calls for. Comfortable and smooth ride. Have worn them for faster tempo and pace runs and they worked well. Handled the speed without feeling unstable. I’ll be using this shoe in the rotation for marathon training. Only reason for 4 stars is Hokas in general always give me arch blisters. They’re fine when I tape but it’s annoying to tape every time. These shoes are worth the hassle though.

Honest reviewI purchased this shoes. Body weight 200lb High 5'8" Shoe size 9.5 The shoes is comfortable. I personally like the comfortability of this shoe more than the adidas adizero prime x2. I like this hoka shoe more than the Cielo x1, the Cielo x1 feels lighter. I like this shoe more than the skyflow but I personally choose the most comfortable shoes thant I can find. I use different kind of shoes according to what my feet want, that way my feet and lower leg anatomy works adjusting lightly accordingly to the terrain and the shoe. I don't think it is a good idea to use the same shoe 100% of the time. This shoe feels a little lighter than the Stinson atr 5. I am not a runner I only used them for walking. I noticed that the shoe is true to size. I have used the shoe during fall in the Midwest while temperatures are going down and my keep are warm wearing this shoe. Probably wouldn't recommend using it during summer IF your feet and hands normally are warm. If you are someone who complaints about having cold feet then I consider it is fine to use this shoe anytime. My achilles tendon does not complaint and my medial and lateral malleolus are not bothered by the show design.

Heavyweights!Maybe I expected these to feel lighter on my feet, but after 3 longer runs I almost feel like I have ankle weights on! For a foot slightly on the narrow side, I have to say these fit pretty well width wise. They are somewhat "bouncy" and "lively" but I just can't get over the weight. In my size 12, over 13 ounces... Yeah, I don't recall running in a shoe this heavy in quite some time! I think the closest one I have is the PrimeX Strung? Bottom line, if you're looking for a nice recovery day or long run shoe that's plush and fairly bouncy, and also don't care about weight, these might be a good option. For me, I wouldn't consider purchasing again unless they were under 12 ounces.

Width doesn't even come close to the stack.I know that with Hoka runners there is a misconception that with such a thick stack that certainly the upper must be wide as well. Well I think as the brand becomes more popular a lot of people are starting to realize that this is not the case and I feel that this is not more true than with Skyward. When these first dropped I was hesitant but very curious. All my trainers are generally 35mm+ And this was almost like a curiosity more than anything. When the black color released I knew I had to cop. Right out of the box it was not going to work out I can't recall seeing a pair of Hoka this narrow to be honest? I generally run in the Bondi and Stinson And even with a D width there is ample width. Not sure what was going on here tried them on almost broke my ankle lol And unfortunately they're going back.

Wide/Flat Footer’s ExperienceThe bounce and comfort this shoe has is really good. To give some background I am a heavy runner with moderate paces (220 lbs 44-45 min 10k time). I also have an odd foot strike, where I supinate when I run even with flat feet. The 2 runs I did with these shoes were 6 and 5 miles respectively. During the first run the outside of my foot would stretch over the footbed on the side of the shoe with the laces tied decently tight. After the run, for the next 2/3 days the outsides of both my feet hurt and I believe it was due to that. The 2nd run I was more cognizant of that the fact my foot would roll over the side and watched more how I run, and it made the shoe significantly better. The midfoot is still a bit tight for me though, and gave me slight foot pain in the beginning of the runs. The midfoot tightness was felt on both runs and this is with only slightly wide feet (bigger than normal width but not a 2e and just mostly a high volume midfoot). Hope this helps anyone with a wide foot considering this shoe.

Wish they had WideNot RW's fault, but they do not come in wide. I fit into them just fine but it took about 20 miles to break them in. Got a few blisters, but it's my shoe of 2024! Love the bounce, love the plushness. Just the perfect shoe! I have the white version and they got dirty REALLLy quick. So recommend one of the darker colors!

Not for wide feet!Really was hoping this shoe would fit my wide EE foot. Unfortunately, I had to send it back as the fit was way too tight in the toe box. I fit perfectly in New Balance SC Trainer V2 - Wide (EE) and the new Asics NovaBlast 4 - Wide (EE). Anyone with wide feet this is not the shoe for you. That being said the build quality was very good. The cushioning felt great, but I would have blisters for sure if I kept it. At $225 the shoe has to feel good and fit right. I knocked off 2 stars for not being able to fit wider feet. I wish Hoka would make this model in a wide version, then I would buy for sure. I should have known, since I bought a pair of Speedgoat 5s in the Medium D width and they are very uncomfortable in the toe box. While I don't get blisters they are always bunching up my toes. Lesson learned. I will now only order Hoka models that have a wide version.

Great easy run long run shoeA super shoe for easy runs! Super comfortable. A little hefty. My only negative is the Hoka sizing. Normally I have to go half size up in Hoka to avoid my pinky toe being crushed. It seems like this toe box might have enough room ,but I was enjoying running in them and didn’t want to send back for a smaller size. The result is a slightly too long and slightly heavier shoe I still really love. Noice fun to run in and just enough stability to keep things controlled at low speed and lower cadence.

HOKA Skyward XI had actually seen some negative comments on the networks, that the products did not arrive, however, in my case it was not like that, and as for the shoe, it is very comfortable, cushioned, it also has reactivity, I am satisfied with it.

Not for supinatorsThis is a fairly well cushioned shoe that should work for pronators. The structure is not neutral and does not work for runners who supinate. Also, the shoe does not seem to be as cushioned as the Nike Invincible.

Hoka Rocker Back!I am really enjoying the new Sykward X. It fits true to size. The forefoot it roomy. There is a nice rocker that helps to propel you forward...then you can gently feel the carbon fiber propel you. The cushioning feels firmer underfoot. I do notice that the peba foam absorbs alot of the impacts and I don't feel as beat up post run. It's a shoe I am reaching for more and more. It's a fun shoe to run in! I have not noticed the upper being too hot during the warmer months. I did run in the rain and it had good traction. The skyward x compliments my running shoe rotation of the clifton 9.
