extremely overhypedI own many premium trail shoes, but this speedgoat is the worst trail shoe i ever owned. They are bulky, heavy, inflexible, midsole is dead, midfoot is too wide and makes foot move around, on top of that, the mud clog the treads and numerous useless creases as soon as you step on muddy surface and makes the shoe even more heavier. If there was negative star rating, i would give them minus 5 star rating without second thought.

Not good overtimeYes, the shoe feels great and the lugs are great for about 100 miles. Then the lugs wear out and you are sliding all over the place. Also, my feet hurt and ache a lot of I run over 20 miles on these shoes. Why? I have no idea. Hoka boasts about being cushioned but maybe it's too cushy? I used to love speed goats but the shoe has changed and I'm not a fan anymore. I won't use this shoe anymore. I bought several 5s hoping it might have been just that show, but the same issues have occured. Waste of money too at that price and low milage out of the shoe make it not worth it.

Falling offFirst pair of Hokas I have ever owned and I normally don't get this much cushion. Have 70 miles on them and they have been good. Reason for a 2 star tread is falling off the heal of the left shoe.

Favorite Trail ShoesPut a couple hundred miles on a pair of these and a 50k trail race. Great all around trail shoe that can hold up to the miles. Great traction and enough cushion, but not too much that it would be unstable on the trails.

Trail Running at it's finest...just buy them!I am 65 years old and have never wanted to run in my entire life. I always go on long hikes and bike rides, so I was looking for a comfortable, lightweight shoe to replace my old hiking shoes. That's when I found out about "trail running shoes." After doing some research, I concluded that the comfort level of the Speedgoat would help me on hikes. I read somewhere how a gal suggested the Running Warehouse. I had never heard of RW before, but I visited them and discovered the Speedgoat 5 was on sale since the 6 had just come out. I like to wear wide shoes, and they had the Goat 5 in wide AND in the color scheme I was looking for, so I jumped on it.
Despite the numerous negative reviews about the tongue on the Speedgoat shoes, I went for the 5s because they had a crazy good 90-day return policy. After trying them out on a 4-mile hike, I discovered they were way more comfortable than my regular hiking boots. Plus, the tongue issue people were whining about was non-existent because I wear socks.
I then found out about a 10k trail run nearby, and despite never having run a single mile, I decided to participate with my shiny new Speedgoat 5’s. The shoes were so comfortable that I never felt like I had them on, and I finished the 10k run in 70 minutes. Talk about comfort—no pain in my old knees. There is no pain anywhere on this old man's body. It was like I was running on air. I wasn't one of the leaders, but I was happy to know several people behind me weren't close to me. Thanks to the Speedgoat 5's for making my first run a huge success. Running Warehouse also deserves my gratitude for its 90-day return policy. They'll be getting all my future business, and I can say that I have confidence in them now, even though I'd never purchased anything online from a company other than Amazon before. Cheers...

Trail walking.I'm 80 years old
I have had a 5 level back fusion and 1 total knee replacement so it is important for me to have a good walking shoe. I discovered the speedgoat by accident but it has really been great for my walking ability. It keeps me from turning my ankles over and really helps me walk straight.

New shoes in the middle of a 100kThey always say, "nothing new on race day", I bought these shoes and they arrived the day I was leaving for my 100k. I did not get a chance to break them in, or even try them on. I threw them in the back of the van and drove off. The day of the race, it was pouring at the start of the race. Within a few hours it stopped and was so hot, but I needed to change into something dry, including my shoes. It was a risk, but I was worried about my feet. I pulled these beauties out of the box and removed the cardboard and finished the race (50 miles in brand new shoes). They were perfect! Do I recommend doing that, absolutely not, but they were perfect for my situation and I will never buy another trail shoe brand. They are fantastic and recovery was quick and pain free.

Awesome Trail Running ShoesFirst pair of trail running shoes, and they have not disappointed since Day 1! Spent a lot of time researching and these seemed to be the best for me. Nice smooth ride with plenty of tractionI love the rockered ride of these shoes. For me, they feel best at slow to moderate paces. If I could make any changes to the speedgoat it would be to widen the toe box a tad and do something about the heel collar to prevent debris from getting in.

hoka speedgoat 5I am 77 years old and have an Italian Spinone that needs to run everyday.
I take him to several trails on the cape and walk/run for miles everyday. I don't think I could do this without the hoka shoes. Very comfortable and almost massaging your feet when walking.

Great Fit, Horrible DurabilityCurrently thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. Unfortunately only got 250 miles out of these shoes before it started separating at the seams. Was disappointed cause they felt amazing on my feet. This is my 2nd pair of Hoka and only got 280 miles on the 1st pair. Anyways, ended up buying the Topo Ultraventure for my next pair on the trail.

Speedgoat ReviewThis shoe has a ton of cushion (compared to what I’m used to), making it comfortable for long runs. However, it felt a little too soft and unstable when trying on. I would be worried about needing more support on uneven terrain. Despite this, the shoe's overall build quality and traction seemed excellent for mild to moderate technical trails.

Second pair of goats.Greatest of all time? Probably, I wore out a pair of 4's after 2 summers of trail maintenance on the dry side of Oregon. The 5's fit great out of the box. Nice they aren't the horrible colors of the 4. Hoka needs to make more colorways that your not embarrassed to wear.

Too narrow at the toe box for meComing from a Gaviota in 2E, I was looking for a trail shoe for an upcoming race and purchased the Speedgoat in 2E. As soon as I pulled them from the box, I could tell the toe box was much more narrow than the Gaviota. Tried them on and had to send them back. I cant really form an opinion on them on the trail but would caution that the toe box is narrow.

Go too trail shoesI have used speed goats for many years 3’s were my favorite but the 5!s are a great choice for technical trails! They have good traction and stick to wet rocks and they dry fast after getting wet! Overall a great trail runner, I usually go up a half size to save the toenails on the steep descents

Most Comfortable Running/Hiking ShoeThis is my first pair of Hokas and I am blown away! I do a lot of hiking and am starting to run again on mostly trails and needed a shoe that was both supportive and comfortable with a wider toe bed. Bought for a 100kI bought these shoes to use on a 100k that was mostly gravel. I had trained specifically with Hoka's Cielo on paved surfaces, but found that my calfs and legs would cramp when walking due to their marathon running design. The Speed Goats were perfect for my needs. I wasn't impressed with the cushioning, maybe because I was so use to the Cielo. However, when I started walking after 30 miles, I was very happy with how I felt. In all, these are great trail shoes, but the cushioning could be better.

amazingcyclist turned (aspiring) trail runner. old joints did NOT like the transition so asked for recommendation from the crew at running warehouse and they pointed me to these. i run mix of packed dirt and rocky, root-covered trails with 500-1000 ft elevation changes and these are perfect. limited ground feel, but they absorb most of the impact. grip is excellent and despite the high stack height, i found them to be very stable perhaps due to rigidity of outsole. i ordered 1/2 size up in these to get more room in toe box.

Speedgoat 5 - wide versionI’ve had issues with Speedgoat’s in the past. The heel cup was very firm and bothered me, and even the 4’s “wide” was not very accommodating. However the 5 “wide” has a soft heel cup that holds well and the upper is truly wider. The upper does stretch and for some this may be an issue. The midsole has great feel for about 200 miles before starting to loose its rebound. The tongue is padded enough but a little short if you are doing a marathon knot. The outsole is great across a wide variety of surfaces and can even handle stretches of tarmac if running to the trails or your ultra has road sections.

Just ok but still my go to trail runnerNot as good as they used to be. I have ran in every version of this shoe.
Pros looks good, great traction, ok fit, ok foam. Not many other brands come close to the performance on all types of trails.
Cons, durability is down across the Hoka shoe range. The foam is harder then previous versions. 250 mile shoe before the foam breaks down. Hoka continues using elf heel aka the dirt funnel. The heel lock is not as good as it used to be. They need to bring back the standard heel. This version continues the trend of having an ultra thin tongue. This could be improved with a standard tongue. The tongue gusset is very good. The upper material breaks down quickly, breathes well but allows a lot of dirt and dust in the shoe. They could bring back the Speedgoat Evo or version 2-4 and I should be happy. I would hold out for version six to see if they improve.

Fairly lightweight, grippy, and cushionThis is the perfect hiking shoe for me. I prefer trail running shoes for hiking to reduce weight and prevent blisters. Most hiking shoes are overkill with support unless a lot of weight is being carried. I know many people use this as a trailrunner, and I can see it working well for that as well. There was zero break-in needed.
Love these!To be honest, I was a bit hesitant to purchase another pair of Speedgoats. I had a pair of the Speedgoat 4 and the tongue would cut into my upper ankle/lower leg area. Also, they would be extremely heavy and remain heavy for quite some time if they got wet from rain or creek crossings. I haven’t experienced any of these issues with the 5. They are amazingly light and breathable, even when wet. The tongue of the shoe has definitely been redesigned and is very comfortable. Overall, they are a fantastic trail shoe with the perfect amount of cushioning. They do seem to run a little snug in the front foot area so I just went with the wide width.
Not for my foot shapeI really wanted to like these shoes as they seem to work so well for so many. The step in comfort is off the charts so plush and comfortable and the grip was superb. However the taper of the toe box is far too aggressive for my feet. I don't have wide feet but the toe box on these was a no go. I also had a hard time with the arches on these after a short run. Maybe the SG6s will work for me.
HokaThese are the best brand of shoes I have ever worn. I'm a nurse and love these shoes. This is my first pair of speed goats . I have worn 5 styles so far.
The GoatThis shoe is top notch it’s the goat for a reason. Are there issues…yes. The upper can get sloppy. The heel lets in some dirt. But, these are far beyond any competitor in the category.
Great shoe with questionable durabilityThe title sums it up. This is my second pair of Speedgoat 5's. This is a great shoe for technical trails. Great Vibram grip, relatively light, very comfortable, most sold trail shoe. The only downside is that the sole gets highly worn after 250km (170 miles). After that, they are no longer any good for technical trails. You can still used them for fire roads, or light trails after they lose their bite.
Athletic shoeExcellent shoe for senior softball!
So far so goodI'm training for a 50K and purchased these shoes due to the hype. Typically, hype is hype, in my experience, but these are legitimate. I run exclusively on trails for my training and like to use these when I know I'll be doing a lot of downhill training. The extra cushioning helps the joints and the wide toe area gives my feet ample room. Brooks Cascadia are my daily "go-to's" but the Speedgoat is now my long run fave.
Beautiful as well as functional running shoe.Hoka has not been so great with their color combination but they got it right with this one. A lot of runners, walkers, hikers ask me what type of Hokas my pair are called because they are so pretty. They are aqua on top, lilac, and cobalt-othello blue in the back. Wide in the toe box for my flat feet in the regular shoe. The Speedgoats help with my plantar issues so this is the perfect shoe for me!

Great trail shoe, ridiculously pricedYeah, great shoe. But is it worth nearly $175 with tax--every 2-3 months? There is plenty of market share for a shoe company that doesn't fleece its athletes.
This is my 51st year as a competitive distance runner--a sub 2:40 marathoner, club member, race organizer, and a coach in a relatively poor community, where kids and their parents struggle to meet basic needs. Running used to be an "affordable" sport, but no more. HOKA doesn't even sell its older models at a discount. Everything is full price. Disheartening, at least.
Good shoesComfortable and fit.
Worse..AgainSpeedgoats (and most Hokas) have gradually gotten worse since the 3rd version. I don’t see why they didn’t just keep making the SG EVO. Everyone loved that shoe. Who decided to get rid of it? How can a runner who works for Hoka be that out of touch with their customer base? Glad Nike is killing it or else I’d have nothing to run in.
Speedgoat 5My first Speedgoat shoe. Needed a shoe with good tread for winter. It's comfortable. I haven't used it in inclement weather yet, have used it on the trail. It's a little clunky, like all Hokas, but I like the drop and comfort. It's not light, that's for sure. But it seems good at what it should be good for.
NarrowHokas run narrow. I always get wides and have not had an issue. Do not like the new design of the back of these shoes. They suck rock and all sorts of debris into the shoe.

Fun Ride!The Hoka Speedgoat 5 is fun to run in! It is well balanced: soft and grippy, but responsive. I found myself flying on the trail and trusting each step thanks to its grippy sole. I didn’t worry about slipping and it felt very supportive, yet had enough cushion to make me feel comfortable and connected on my run. Great job, Hoka!
5th PairGoing on my Fifth Pair. Typically get 450 to 500 Miles each. Great Grip and Cushion and worn at multiple 50k races with technical trails and substantial elevation gains.
Great shoeThis is my second pair of Speedgoat 5’s. I order Wide in my regular size. I don’t have particularly wide feet, but I need wide in the Speedgoat. I wish they made all the colors in wide, because I really love the lavender color! I run in the desert, with some rocky technical, but assume that these would be great on pretty much any terrain… They also feel good on the road.

Cons:
The ridiculous flared heel pull that creates a shelf and funnel to collect dirt, sand, and dust to help get into your shoe. Terrible design for a trail shoe. It also gets in the way of gaiters.
The cushioning definitely wears down more quickly than the last version. When I replaced my first pair of Speedgoat 5’s (after about 500 miles), I put the new ones next to my old ones and the old ones looked like they had flat tires.

Got what I ordered and happy with the shoesGot what I ordered and happy with the shoes. Packaging and delivery time was good. I got Hoka Speedgoat 5 trail runners in a hard to find size, but Running Warehouse had them.
Narrow and painfulAfter listening to HOKA hype from friends for a year, I decided to try the Speedgoat 5. About me: I put in about 5 miles per day, I have low arches, I have wide feet, and I underpronate. At first the Speedgoats felt ok, but after 4 or 5 days, I was in so much pain that I had to take a week off. The EE-wide version is NOT wide and really did some damage to the outer arch of my feet. Do NOT recommend, especially for wide feet!
My new favorite trail runnerI’m a 68 year old trail runner struggling to stay in shape (it’s more fun when you’re still getting faster). I have a wide forefoot with a relatively narrow heel so wide shoes don’t work for me but regular shoes sometimes feel too tight in the toe. I wear a 10.5 D in almost everything including these. I’ve worn a lot of different shoes over the decade’s having been most loyal to Asics road shoes. I used to run mostly Solomon trail shoes, but they never were a great fit for me so I started trying everything, including a lot of minimalist shoes. Lately I’ve been liking my Saucony Perigrins (on my third pair) and Topo Mountain Racer 2s. Generally speaking I prefer less shoe to more and I thought Hokas would be the dead opposite of what I like, but after finally wearing these out I realized they’ve become my favorite trail shoe for just about any run and was relieved to see that the SG5 was still available. Aside from a great fit and just the right amount of lift I find the outsoles super sticky on any surface (I used to consider falling a routine part of my runs and just part of the fun, but like me it’s getting old) and the midsole not too spongy. The uppers still look great on my old ones (that was always the first thing to go with my Solomons) but the soles are very worn, so that would seem to be their only weakness for me. I can’t tell you how many miles I put on these, but probably not a lot. If I ever got my mileage back up where Id like it these might prove too expensive to run all the time but I’d probably still use them for events since I do seem to get some of my better training runs out of them.
Best Trail Shoes EverI’ve been wearing the goat since 2014 and I LOVE them so much. Lightweight, grippy, supportive, comfortable and super fast drying. I run trails in the jungle of Costa Rica 3-4 times a week and these are all I wear. 5 pair on rotation. Hose them off, good to go! The best!
Built well but not for meI wanted to like this shoe but this shoe hurt my feet! Second time I tired Hoka and just cant wear them apparently. I found this shoe bulky.
Comfortable, as alwayscomfort and price were right. As a 76-year-old runner, I need the cushion but also found that I lool for a shoe offered in "Wide." Old feet tend to flatten out.
Most comfortableThese are the best shoes I have ever bought
Great shoe but wears very quickly.This shoe is light and nimble and full of that Hoka cushion you expect. However, the durability is very concerning. After only 50 miles of 95% dirt trails, the tread on both shoes were visibly noticeable. Now after 100 miles, many of the lugs are almost flat. At this rate, I'll be lucky to have any tread at all in 50 more miles which means 150 miles is it and then I would only wear them for dry road runs. I think the midsole and upper will be just fine to 300+ miles, but with no tread, this will be a very slick shoe. Pretty disappointed as this is my first pair of Speedgoats. As for fit, even in a wide these shoes are narrow but bearable. The width is the about the same as the slimmer Altra's or most Salomon's so I'm not sure how this gets a wide rating. The upper is flexible so I was still happy with the fit. Overall this is a great shoe if you don't mind replacing it after 150 miles.
A bit more room and easier to slip on.I only use speedgoats in ultras on punishing surfaces, so the added room in the toe box and improved heel that makes changing them easier (bending over gets tough by mile 80) is welcome. Other than that, they appear to be the same durable and reasonably lightweight shoe they have been all along.

being quite skimpy, a wide felt like a regular, and I had to sadly return them. Until Hoka returns to their previous great fitting/feeling boot, won't be able to wear them.

Too FirmWhat’s the point of having a firm shoe with a high stack height?
Not worthyThe heel of this shoe wears out within first 2 runs you feel the gap in between. The sole of this shoes is for trail run and tarmac but 2 runs in hard ground it's done. Not worth the money.
Love the shoes but taking time to adjustShoes have a great feel, good traction, and light weight. I’m going from at 10mm to 4 mm drop and it’s taking longer than expected to adjust. Shoes did run about half size small for me. Needed to return my first pair and get 1/2 size bigger.
My go to long run shoe!I ran 100 miler in these shoes and never had to change! They are my absolute favorites!
Old time Speedgoat user sees design changesI am 6ft 1in, 190 lb male, who wears size 13 regular. I have a neutral foot and supinate (edge of foot) when I run. The original Hoka Speedgoat size 13D fit great, but each year they get narrower and lighter (bad for longevity). Last years model I had to wear size 13 2E and they fit. The sole has never lasted more than 200 miles, once it was just 1 marathon (4 sole nobs came off) and I returned them. The maximal cushioning is great for flat surfaces, but really bad for angles (especially compound ones). This year it is too tight width wise, lighter (less material but same high cost and same quick wear). I purchased online 13 2E and just ran 20 miles in them to break them in. The heal slips and you need to use lockdown design, the cushioning is great, the sole is absolutely minimal (wears too fast), I like most of the color this year, but I always called them a clown shoe because of the bright highlights (I use a black marker to reduce the florescent color). These shoes will be strictly for training only, and I will wear Brooks for races. For several reasons, if you want something nimble and fast, then you simply have to go to a different company, and Brooks fit me the best. But, training wise; Hoka's are hands down the best maximal sneaks, and really save your knees.
Best Trail Shoe by HOKAGrippy, protective, responsive. In my opinion the best trail shoe on the market right now. The shoe is a great combination of the Speedgoat 4 & well loved Evo Speedgoat.
Design success...Aesthetic failureMy word, would someone please help Hoka One One on this! Leaving traditional gender color distribution patterns aside and completely using basic color theory and commercial consumer metrics, get it together, please! They have taken some of their colorways to levels so bad that I would rather trail run in less functional shoe, that is to say, IN PAIN but with a less repulsive colorway than some of these new chromatic disasters. This is my 21st pair of Hokas, and while that's a lot, it could've likely been my 32nd.
The new Red/Black goretex colorway, insanely attractive, and I don't prefer either if those colors apart or together, but its undeniably appealing to the eyes. The new Easter pattern, while a huge fan of the holiday, horrifying choice for trail shoe.
Best trail runners or hiking shoeBest there is for me imho use it as trail runner and hiking shoe, great endurance, lightweight, grip and space in toe box. Daily 20 miles plus and still not tired, sole compound is soft and doesn't last but 150 miles but still worth it.

Poor lockdownI really wanted to like these shoes. Unfortunately the lockdown is sloppy at best and they are dangerous to use on technical terrain. I really miss the sg4 and evo speedgoat, especially at this price point.
Lugs wear down quickly but ride is betterI've run the utmb route and rocky trails (technical single track and some fire roads) in these and really like the improved upper. For me the older SG4 upper became unbearably painful on the top of my toes and the foam seemed to bottom out after about three to four hours. The SG5 foam feels more responsive and doesn't have that squishy/bottoming out feel after a few hours. The upper is super forgiving and feels great after running an entire day plus in them. That said, the upper stretches so the laces almost pucker the vamp area- in fact I was worried the lace eyelets would touch over time from the upper stretching from having the laces tightened. That came close to happening for me but didn't. My biggest complaint is that the vibram outsole is wearing so much faster on the SG5. I went through three pair of SP4s and got about 250-300 miles in them. The SG5s (I'm on my third pair now) seem to get about 150-175 before the lugs are smooth. I thought it was the same vibram foam being used so maybe it is due to the firmer foam or something else that causes the faster wear because I'm running the same trails and getting different wear between the last version and this one. I jokingly call these shoes my “Buck a mile” shoe because that is essentially what it costs to run in these for me. I get that the grip to wear ratio has to be tough to dial in, and in this version the SG, it just isn't correct for me. I'm honestly looking at jumping to a different brand. The cost of replacement is too expensive for me. That said, I really do love the ride, just wish the outsole last longer - more like the previous version for me.
1000 milesI have 1000 miles (500 on the Camino) on the shoes and while the soles are worn down the rest of the show is still going strong. The wide toe space helps if you have bunions. The plush feel avoids joint pain.
Bring back the SG Evo!!!The ride is completely different from previous years. Really firm. Kind of like if a Sense Ride and a SG had a baby. Not really what I'm looking for. Something like the SG Evo would have been sweet though. Maybe just do that next time.
Narrower than my SG4sMy SG 4s were a 13 wide and these in the same size are narrower. The durability on these isn't as good as my 4s also. The mesh ripped within the first 20 miles and the sole on the front started to separate from the toe on both shoes in under 100 miles.
Much Too FirmThis version is not softer. Hoka should have listened to their customer base. They are now getting destroyed by Nike. The Zegama is on a different level entirely.
1000 miles inFor me this version checks every box. Moving from the 4s I was concerned after about 20 miles because it is a completely different shoe. Almost nothing similar. The only downside to me is that they aren't as durable as the prior model. Both pairs have just over 500 miles and they were both done at 400 and completely shot now. A 200 mile race, and a couple 100s. The trade off of durability for a lighter, more responsive, better fit/adjustability, and higher performing race shoe are more than worth it.
UnderwhelmingOverall ride and quality of SG5 feels like Hoka R&D team set out to transform the SG4 into production savings project by stripping down features. The SG5 is like a base model to the SG4 premium package. It's not a terrible shoe but I can't boast about any particular area other than feeling pretty light on foot. It didn't take long to shred a pair on technical, rocky terrain. Meh... looking forward to SG6 already, but have you seen the Tecton X. HOME RUN Hoka. It can do everything the SG5 can but much better.
Does the trickI think the main gripe with the SG4 was the upper. Tons of folks complaining about blisters on the pinky toe. So they made the upper more accommodating almost to a fault. The whole upper has a little flex, plus the neoprene thing across the toe. If this shoe gets wet and you are bombing down something technical, it will be a rough day for your toe nails. Something closer to the evo speedgoat (perfect shoe) would be good for the upper. Midsole is same to me. Ran through two pairs of these already and back to buy my 3rd. Outsole change was shocking to me. Vibram anything is a solid buy. It's one of the biggest reasons to buy the shoe in the first place and they decided it was a good idea to degrade it. It still works well, but wears out a lot quicker than all prior versions.
Upper good, lower badUpper is great except the tongue is too small. It took me a few runs to realize that I had to really cinch them down in order for them to feel right - I generally wear my long run shoes pretty loose.
The lower is much much more firm than the SG4. I've spoked with others who feel the same - our feet hurt after longer (>20mi) runs due to the stiffness. It's unfortunate as they are still a hoka and bulky, and therefore they don't perform well at high speed into tight turns, so half marathons and below are out. So you're left with... not much these are really great for. SG4 is awesome at 20mi+ (for me). SG5 doesn't seem to have a good sweet spot.
The most ideal shoe for long distances would be SG5 upper and SG4 lower. Please HOKA, please!
A Step down from SG4Compared to SG4, Midsole feels thinner. Outsole lug design wears out faster. Heel is half as cushy. Tighter toe box promotes blisters. Foam not as bouncy, kinda flat. Hopefully they will get it right in SG6
Bear no resemblence to speedgoat 4I use for hiking and backpacking.
SG 4 had a well-cushioned ride. Size 2e was perfect for me.
SG 5 feels like its providing pronation control. The heel doesn't fee cushioned. I tried just walking around the house with these on, made my arches hurt. Pluse the toe box feels narrower.
YesAfter 20 miles I wasn't too sure. After my first mountain 100k I was sold. Performed perfectly. No weird rubs, no fails, and a lot of running forgetting all about even having shoes on. Lightweight (it's all relative) for the protection and ride. Only downside is that I'm at about 400 miles and they are not worthy of racing any longer. Just a short run beater shoe now. The SG5 I was well beyond 500 miles before I got to this condition - but the trade offs for performance are worth it.
Numbingly narrowed toe boxI really wanted the Speedgoat 5s to work - the traction is amazing, the cushion is phenomenal. But Hoka once again narrowed the toe box and it took only 1.75 miles for the outer two toes on each foot to go numb - 10 miles to blister. I haven't seen any reviews mentioning the narrower toe box - I've just seen the word "redesigned." The upper is supposed to be stretchy, but it squeezes the toes in and if you measure the bottom of the sole, it's about 4mm narrower (using my home tape measure) than the 4s. Wish they would make a more "regular" fit as I have pretty regular feet and can't get into these.

Speedgoat 5I'm really enjoying the Speedgoat 5. I run fairly technical trails with a good bit of incline and I've got a little over 80 miles in these. They've got good cushioning and are fairly light. The only complaint I have this far is that sometimes small trail debris get into the back of the shoes because of the heel design. Other than that I'd highly recommend them.
more comfy version of Evo line....The shoe is nice. Midsole is a bit on lean side and kind of stale. Knobs are industry standard. Upper feels more comfy than the previous Matrix. No plastic feeling nonsense on upper. Heel compartment more comfy than Evo. Not sure what the elfin flair is for.... extra weight. Low profile tongue keeps bulk down, allows shoe to flex. Out of box, shoe climbs WAY better than previous board like Speedgoats and I'd say it climbs better than the EVO. I like more midsole these days. Currently using NB More 3 for trail running and testing Brooks Caldera 6. Me - 155lbs, 51 y/o, about 35-45mpw.
Best Shoes EverMy 5th pair of Hoka One One shoes. Absolutely comfortable, my foot pain is relieved. Love the color combo on this pair. Great traction for walking, hiking.

Comments: Been wearing the SG since 3rd version as they have eliminated my knee pain without sacrificing any performance. Just wore SG5s for first time and completed a 50K trail race. No foot issues whatsoever and, as always, zero knee pain. Absolutely love this version of the SG after having two pair of SG4s and a pair of SG3s. All of the noted improvements were noticed and appreciated during the run - from the tongue to the upper material to the reduced weight and the heel flare - ride and traction was awesome. After initial use, I believe the upper on the SG5s will last longer than previous versions. Looking forward to putting them to the test! Highly recommend. Will be ordering another pair when available.

Comments: For ultra trail racing, the EVO Speedgoat was definitely better but for training, the updated SG5 is awesome. It's wider with worse midfoot lockdown compared to the EVO SG. The forefoot width is great but getting the shoe snug isn't easy because the tongue is thin and not quite long enough. Good update to SG 4 if you felt the old version was too narrow. Definitely not as good as EVO SG from 2019 though.

Comments: A couple of 100k races and 300 total trail miles later I think this model provides all of the improvements that I was looking for from the prior models. Wider toe box noticeable with the baby toe not rubbing, lighter shoe instantly noticed, more feel and control, and less of a waterbed feeling ride. I pair the shoes with injinji ultra socks and have absolutely no issues - no rub, no blisters so far. I run mostly Southern California trails wide variety of trail conditions and I highly recommend it.
