Takes some experimentingI have had this pack for a while now. I originally bought it so that I’d have a spare pack that my much thinner teenage son could also use on runs, and was interested in trying this because of a review on humble runner. My son had no issues with it, but he did not like carrying the bottles in front and preferred to put them in back pockets. When delivered the vest material is very stiff. After use (and putting it in the wash *inside a wash bag*) I’m pleased to say it is very soft. I think this softening up is key to the fit, because when it was stiff we struggled with it.
After much use I have learned how to optimize the fit and the pack, and it is now my favorite. If you go to the instinct videos, the instructions are mostly correct. Loosen the sides straps all the way, set the front where you want and the sternum strap width you prefer, and then crank down the sides. Where I was going wrong though, is that I was putting the sternum straps way too far apart towards the top and the bottom. This didn’t work for my body shape. It was only when I moved the straps closer together over my mid-chest, and the material softened, that I now have an excellent fit. The vest rides very high, and you have the top sternum straps high, it won’t be to comfortable.
I use this pack with front bottles from instinct (which FYI are much shorter than Hydrapak flasks), hybrid bottles from Ultraspire (which fit very well in the front) and a Hydrapak 1.5L bladder. The pack is tiny and minimalist but it is surprising how much it can hold.
Right now, I find this pack so comfortable, sometimes I wear it without any water just to have extra pockets (for things like sunglasses at dawn dusk, hat, gloves, phone, etc). For the price it can’t be beat! It may take a while to optimize to your body!
