Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stable

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

Product Details:

Bringing the fast and furious ride of a super shoe to your nearest trail is the New Balance SuperComp Trail, a trail racing shoe with the features to take your performance to the next level on race day. Taking inspiration from the brand's marathon racing shoe, the SuperComp Elite, the SC Trail is packed with a high stack of New Balance's ultra-responsive and soft FuelCell foam that keeps your stride efficient and your legs feeling fresh from start to finish.

The stiff carbon fiber plate embedded in the midsole creates a highly propulsive underfoot experience, making running longer and faster feel easier, especially on the uphills. But don't worry, the carbon plate also offers the flexibility needed to take on uneven terrain, thanks to the split forefoot design that adapts to the terrain.

And when the trails get challenging, you can count on the Vibram Litebase rubber lugs in the outsole to keep you grounded and moving onward and upward. There is additional texture to the lugs that has been strategically placed and engineered to increase braking power in the heel and increase propulsion in the forefoot.

Rounding out the SC Trail is the synthetic mesh upper that is lightweight, highly durable, and offers excellent breathability. These components work to deliver a snug yet comfortable fit that keeps your feet protected and feeling strong for the duration of the training session or race.

Overall, the New Balance SuperComp Trail takes the core philosophies of its road racing counterpart and applies them to the trails to deliver top performance in faster workouts and ultra-marathon races.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

New Balance is the real MVPNew Balance is the real MVP for making this shoe. In a market with bulky, huge volume racing shoes New Balance is making shoes with modern tech that still have a traditional feel. This shoe reminds me of the old Summit Unknown but with a modern midsole and plate. Its basically a traditional racing flat with a springy and fast ride. My legs feel fresh even after hard long efforts. Is it the best shoe for 100 miles? Probably not, the plate is noticeable in the forefoot and could cause fatigue, but I would be fine in this shoe up to 50k no problem. I wouldn't recommend going up a size in this shoe. Its not meant to have a generous fit, it has snug racing fit. Going up a size defeats that purpose which is why there are reviews saying it doesn't fit good after going up. Initially, there was some pressure in the toes but after breaking the shoe in it fits like a glove and the pressure is gone. It is also meant to be 10mm drop. People buying and then leaving a negative review on a shoe that is clearly stated as having a traditional higher drop because you wanted a low drop shoe, what did you expect? Overall, its a great shoe that delivers on the intended purpose. If you are looking for a ultra distance shoe with low drop that has a ton of room, this isn't that shoe, which should be obvious from just looking at the description/specs. Really, just please, if you want a low drop shoe for wide feet, go buy one and don't leave negative reviews on shoes that are not that. There are really only a few options these days with higher drop like this, please leave them to those of us who appreciate them.

What exactly is FuelCell these days? The first pair of shoes I purchased from the FuelCell line were the FuelCell Rebel v.2's. Loved the FuelCell material. The material in the rebel v. 2's set my hopes and expectations for anything that came since with the fuel cell stamp on it. Since, then, I purchased 2 pair of the fuel cell elite v3's the fuel cell propel v4 and the fuel cell trainor v. 1. Lastly, I purchased a pair of the FuelCell Supercomp Trail for faith in the fuel cell material. What really bothers me is that although all of the above shoes indicate fuel cell, The bounce, feel, texture and energy return in each shoe have a different feel. Whatever material is in the Propel and the trail shoes is substantially different. The elite v.3's is similar but not the same and the trainors is different but I like the bounce so it gets a bi. I wish NB was more like the Puma Nitro line in that the material is identical regardless of the shoe purpose or design. If it says Nitro, you know what to expect. Fuel Cell on the other hand has to many interpretations. Think Im done with the Fuel Cell line for now.

Almost Super!I wanted to love these trail running shoes! Just too narrow and tight. The reviews were correct. Too small in size (size up!) and too narrow in general. They have a nice bounce to them, but they could use more foam for the forefoot to make the shoe more balanced and cushioned, thus the Super Trail Running Shoe worth $200. If I wanted more ground feel, I would buy a $100 trail running shoe. Everything else was great. Sending back, however.

Close, but a missHaving loved the 1080 road shoe and Hierro v7 trail shoe for distances up to 100 milers, I had high hopes for these shoes. The outsole is great with good grip. The midsole however is a bit too squishy. It felt unstable on even mild trail. The plate seemed fine. I think a firmer/ stiffer foam would have made this a winner. But, the upper material seemed draped like a tent. It was made out of fantastic material that I'm sure would never rip, snag, or wear out. It also seemed very water resistant. But, it allowed so much gapping between my foot and it that I just slid around. If they used the upper they had on the Hierro v7 or something snug to a foot shape like on their road shoes, it would have been much better. Close but no.

Trail ReviewOverall this shoe is pretty solid. I think the drop is a bit much and it could be a bit less and could have more cushioning in the forefoot. My feet took a pounding on a technical downhill, even with the carbon plate, otherwise it performs well. I sized the same as my NB trainer and have not developed and friction spots or blisters. Not sure if this would be my choice for longer races more than 50k though. I would want less overall drop and more forefoot cushion for that scenario unless the terrain was pretty flat.

Race shoe best for light to medium trailI wore these for the Pilot Mountain to Hanging Rock 50km and JFK 50 mile. I would wear again for the JFK50, but will probably go with a firmer shoe for Pilot Mountain. Positive is it is the carbon plate makes it fast additionally, it is light. It has a ton of cushion which is nice to long distance; however, it is a little too much give for rough terrain. Medium but grippy lugs, good for damp to dry. I would not recommend them for a muddy trail. Also, shoe is a little small. I recommend going up half a size. The toe box doesn’t have much protection, but this also gives a little room for swelling.

Excellent Shoe for Trail RunningExcellent footwear, good grip on technical terrain and on steep slopes. Great momentum and speed with its carbon plate, in short a good companion for many kilometers of trail running on fast terrain.

Heel Toe offset too high. The forefoot is too low for a trail shoe. With an offset of 10 mm the foot angle is quite steep. 6mm would be more appropriate by adding some more midsole at the front. This is only the first version. I look forward to the update after the bugs have been ironed out. It does not warrant the high price with this version.
