As the broad base of the running shoe pyramid, daily trainers are the definition of a go-to running shoe. They prioritize dependable comfort, support, durability, and routine versatility. They're a staple in every runner's closet. If you're newer to running shoes, you can confidently start your journey here.

  • Performance TrainersPerformance Trainers

Performance trainers (or "super trainers") blend elements of daily trainers and super shoes, often giving you the benefits of advanced foams and plates, but adapted for daily training. They make fast runs faster and long runs easier. Highly versatile, many are also great choices as accessible racing shoes.

  • Super ShoesSuper Shoes

The pinnacle of the pyramid, super shoes are the fastest running shoes you can buy. They're designed to race your absolute best and are the apex of running shoe technology and innovation. Often built with carbon fiber plates and cutting edge superfoams for the highest energy return, they're made for ultimate racing speed.

Designed to handle most trail runs, these shoes prioritize comfort and a smooth ride. These shoes are great for anything from smooth singletrack, park trails, and fireroads making them ideal for those who run from their doorstep on streets before hitting the trail.

  • Rocky & Technical TrailsRocky & Technical Trails

These shoes are best used for hard, rugged trails such as shale, granite or sandstone where grip on smooth surfaces and underfoot protection are important.

  • Soft & Muddy TrailsSoft & Muddy Trails

Designed for use in muddy, soggy conditions, these shoes feature very aggressive outsoles that dig deep into soft ground for exceptional traction.

  • Snowy & Icy TrailsSnowy & Icy Trails

Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.

Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral Running Shoes

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stability Running Shoes

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

Product Details:

All of the best marathon racing shoes have a unique feature that sets them apart from the rest, but none of them embodies uniqueness and innovation quite like the Nike Alphafly 3. Just by looking at it, you can tell that it's a fast and special shoe. No detail has been overlooked, and Nike has delivered another surefire racing shoe that's bound to be seen on many runners' feet on marathon courses throughout the world.

Although this shoe stands out in every way, the star of the show is the midsole design. For the first time in the Alphafly series, the midsole now features a continuous bottom layer of ZoomX cushioning. This promotes smoother transitions and increased propulsion while still offering an incredibly soft ride. Sandwiched between the top and bottom layers of ZoomX foam lie the quintessential staples of the Alphafly — the two Air Zoom units and carbon fiber Flyplate. These elements work together to launch you into your next step, making running faster feel easier.

For improved stability over long distance runs, the full-length carbon fiber Flyplate has been widened, which also helps deliver a more propulsive sensation underfoot. Additionally, the Alphafly 3 has a widened base, which makes it more accommodating for the non-elites who still want to experience the top-end speed this shoe brings to the table.

With increased speed comes the need for confidence-inspiring traction, and the Fast Shot outsole balances the need for grip without compromising weight. Meanwhile, the updated Atomknit 3.0 upper dials in the fit and keeps your feet comfortably secure from start to finish.

Overall, the Nike Alphafly 3 continues its legacy as a pinnacle marathon racing shoe that is bound to etch its name in the story of your best race.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Fast Shoe But A Dollar A MileThe Nike Alphafly Next% 3 is a fast Shoe that seems to make running fast easier, though it does also seem to change your running form as in my opinion you tend to run with longer strides and lower cadence with this shoe and the propulsion from the shoe seems to favor that type of running form. The outsole wears out quickly, and needs to be replaced after 300 miles. It would be helpful if Nike would provide replacement outsoles, maybe even including a pair with the shoe in the box. As the foam and shoe can handle probably 600 to 1000 miles if you had replacement outsoles for it. The BAD: this carbon plated shoe as others seems to produce excessive impact forces on your knees, hips, pelvis and spine, and Nike should disclose the numbers on these increased impact forces. After running with these shoes regularly, my knees were in pain and I also seemed to feel it in my hips, pelvis and spine. Runners with bone fractures in their pelvis, spine and even femurs may not realize that the excessive impact forces on the skeletal system may be from carbon plated shoes such as the Nike Alphafly 3. There should be full disclosure from the shoe manufacturers, such as if it causes 3x the impact forces on the knees, hips, pelvis and spine then runners should know about it. Runners who regularly use shoes such as the Alphafly 3 may have adjusted to the shoe or recovered from any injuries due to the excessive impact forces and gotten stronger.

Fast Shoe for Forefoot StrikersI do love the shoe. I’ve always raced well in Nike. Spikes - Eldoret, Road shoes - Air Moriah, Streak, and then I switched to Adidas and raced in the Adizero Adios 4 and trained in the Boston 7 and 11. I decided to try the Alphafly 3. I’ve run some pretty fast 5Ks in them, but don’t “sit back” in the heel because they’re too soft. If they were a little more firm in the heel, I would be collecting gold medals! I think they are better in cold weather. I might put them in the freezer before I race in them. I’m now going to buy the Zoom Fly 6. Running Warehouse has excellent service. Or should I say “gold medal” customer service. You’re so nice! I love to watch your shoe reviews too!

Don’t lastI love love these shoes and I feel like they make me run harder and faster, but I’ve only used them for 3 weeks and the bottom is coming apart. They don’t last. Unfortunately, they aren’t worth the money and I’ll be looking at other brands with better quality.

BOING, BOING ,BOINGThe bad. This is hands down the most obnoxious shoe i have ever run in. It is sooo loud, i use my beats over my shockz so i dont have to hear boing, boing, boing for 20 miles. Ok i feel better, now on to the good..... This is by far the most cushoned and propulsive shoe i have run in. I will go with a 12.5 on my next pair as they are a tad snug, but non problematic. I own the endorphin 4 pro, sc elite v4, and hoka cielo. This is my favorite. I havent had them long enough to comment on durability, but 25 miles so far so good. I will purchase another pair when these fail provided its not within 300 miles. I pay retail so i need a shoe to last at least to the 300 mile mark....lets hope these make it...

Clunky and SqueakyI was so excited for these after having very good runs in the Next %. I wore them for a 5K pre marathon race hard training effort (nothing new on race day). I was immediately disappointed. The shoe is responsive and it does propel you forward, but it doesn’t fit as well as the Next % and is very loud with an audible squeaky noise that had me off and concerned about the shoe within the first mile. After speaking with Nike and reading more reviews, this is a known issue resulting from the air pod and the carbon plate. It’s just not for me.

Good OneGreat bouncy racing shoe. If you strike mid or forefoot you are good with these. I strike mid foot. For me the only thing to consider is marathon distance - they are great as long as I maintain good form to the end of the race. When my form falls apart, they work against me. I disagree with people making fast-pace only comments, if you strike fore/mid they will work at most paces. Yes they shine and bounce the most when you run fast, but they aren't as terrible as people make them sound at slower paces. I wouldn't buy them for casual jogging, or if you are new to running, but if you have a run that mixes easy/faster paces, they work fine as long as you maintain good. Yes they will feel less stable/much less bouncy at slower paces, but not unusable. If you are not used to plated shoes, your calfs and balls of your feet will feel it. I am no Nike (or any shoe company) fan, but I feel like the negative reviews are about people hating on the brand. Forget the brand, especially forget the YouTube shoe review influencers - work with the shoe that works for you. This one is worth a try, if for nothing else to experience the unique ride.

mushyIf you like snappy and responsive--this ain't your shoe. Look to the AF1 on Stockx, look to the metaspeed Paris, maybe the adidas Pro 4. The AF3 was disappointing. Squishy and ponderous. AF1 fans look elsewhere.

Fast Shoes, tight upperFast shoes compared to vaporfly with a more solid foundation and base for Wide Foot runners. Size up a half because after a marathon your toenails might fall off if it’s very tight. Don’t do what I did and get TTS.

comfortable but stiffthese shoes are very comfortable, but not the softest in the world. not surprising as a purpose built racing shoe. the contour of the sole is perfect to get the most out of your stride. due to the stiffness i will not wear these as an every day training shoe, but they will be reserved for races.

The best energy return you can get in a raceThis shoe is definitely an upgrade on AlphaFly 1 and 2. Not just bounce and return in forefoot but across the whole shoe this time creating a light, springy feeling, and as your legs tire you are still able to get the same return.

Amazing shoe! Unless, your a heel strikerRan a 15k trial run in the alpha 3 recently. It felt very smooth but not fast. Nothing compared to the metaspeed Paris. Next day my legs and especially calf was super sore. Even though it’s efficient. One needs to be a mid to forefoot runner.

FANTASTICI had heard that version two of the Alphafly wasn't as great as the first and I never tried it, but I am a big fan of the Alphafly 1's. I like these better than the 1's, they are great. No break-in needed, so (personally) I'd just use them once for feel before using them strictly for racing to keep the carbon footplate "lively" in essence. Unless you got the cash to spend, then use these all day everyday because they are faster and feel great.

Fast!Great shoes. Had the adizeros and decided to switch it up and get the vapor fly. Originally when I tied my shoes they would dig into the top of my foot but found a new way to tie them that adds a little more ankle stability and they felt amazing on my feet. PR’d my marathon time with these!

Totally different shoesI have been used Nike Vaporfly all series, even though co-runners in my running community kept saying its sister Alphafly series for more than 2years. I felt I am not ready. But for the fall 2024 half and full marathon, I decided to use Nike Alphafly Next% 3. It was amazing to wear for 10- mile tempo tun and 16-mile long run. Why not use it much earlier!!! So strongly recommend for runners who hesitate to wear it and also love to run front landing styles. Never disappointing each of you! Enjoy it!

Best Worst ShoeThis shoe feels great, but it is falling apart after less than 100 miles. Once I got the shoes, I was using them for long runs, and the black heel pieces were falling off. One of my friends also bought the shoes, and his shoes are falling apart from the knit mesh. For a shoe to cost this much, they should not be falling apart. Nike has been having a challenging time lately.
